Last 50 of 533- 4 terminal Lithium battery deal I use batteries with a built-in booster: https://antigravitybatteries.com/products/starter-batteries/restart-oem/atx12-hd-rs/ I have yet to charge one, and the first one I bought sat on the bench for almost a year…
- 2001 vfr fi Cutting out Those look like typical auto parts store splices. I have used much better quality, and they still failed. I finally just got a whole new harness from Eastern Beaver so it's all one piece from stator to R/R.…
- Hello (again) after a long absence Welcome back! I see you also have a nice collection of hollow bodies goin' on there. I have more guitars than bikes, but I've been playing longer than I've been riding. I also don't have near as much garage space. Nice…
- 2001 vfr fi Cutting out 25 year old wiring that was barely adequate when new. This is exactly why I installed headlight/R/R wiring kits that come direct from the battery. Taking those high current loads off the wimpy stock harness, and…
- Hello! Here's my new to me 2007 VFR Welcome from NoSoCal. Nice to see she's still in the VFRD family. She's purdy.
- Airbox re-assembly Pics would help. I have de-PAIRed, and de-flappered my airboxes to avoid these issues.
- 5th gen Paint As was mentioned already it's really all about the prep. That's why pro jobs cost so much. Many hours of sanding, and priming. The fairings on my ZX600A were badly broken, and "repaired" with fiberglass which has a…
- '98 VFR - May Have F***ed Up Could have been overtightened previously then cracked from heat cycles/vibration. Your just the "lucky" one who got the break. Could have been a flawed fastener from the start though that's rare on these bikes. FTR I…
- '98 VFR - May Have F***ed Up One about 2/3-3/4 the size of that bolt which I think is a M5. You don't want to cut into the threaded area of the case or you'll be in the Heli-Coil zone. Those work well too if 5h1t goes sideways, but more work.…
- '98 VFR - May Have F***ed Up I would soak the hole with ATF/acetone, and try a reverse/counterclockwise drill bit first. There's a good chance the heat from drilling will back the broken bit right out. If not then you have a hole for a square…
- Hello all Just make sure it's MC oil so you don't contaminate the clutch plates with some super slippery additive.
- Hello all The super lightweight oils recommended today are simply to get those fuel economy numbers up. I'd run a good synthetic 10-40 in it without hesitation. It'll be fine.
- Prepping new to me 1998 20 hours ago, Sirbike Perfect, I was about to ask about the “while I’m in theres” Check out the skills used here. [image: IMG_0247.thumb.jpeg.62851451ad753b92264a95e5bfeb0552.jpeg][image:…
- Hello all Any oil is better than no oil.
- Prepping new to me 1998 +1 got my first Antigravity battery back in 2020 for Play Girl™. When it arrived I thought they sent an empty box. It sat on the bench for almost a year before I installed it, and never needed a maintenance charge.…
- Prepping new to me 1998 Penske shock does not require a spring compressor. You can use compressed air to bleed, but will need access to a nitrogen bottle for final charge. Fortunately my partner in racing has one we use for the race car tires.
- My New Dunlop Roadsmart 4 have arrived. I put RS3s on Work Girl back when my commute doubled, and included freeway due to a closure. They have worn well, and have good stick for ST tires. I'm gonna have to re-balance the front though as it's developed a nasty…
- Yellow 5th Gen painting I like how it made the R turn signal the nose of the dragon.
- A short "hello" and introduction Welcome to the sanitarium. Good bunch here I think you'll like it.
- Need advice on dealing with the throttle cables when replacing right hand control on 5th gen, 17 hours ago, vfrgiving Please tell me you didn't use a Phillips head bit? First rule of wrenching on any Honda (or Japanese motorcycle for that matter) is to remove all Phillips head screwdrivers from your toolbox and…
- Gotta Ride! I cut the feelers down on my stock pegs because I got tired of scraping them all the time. 1/2" was all it took. They still let me know when I'm about to start grinding hard parts, but the margin is thinner.
- Gotta Ride! Wouldn't take but a few minutes to remove those nubs from those pegs with the right tool. Mine are aftermarket. They do have nubs, but not near as much.
- Gotta Ride! Interesting. I have the solid aluminum pegs on the day/track bike, and the stock rubber pads on the commuter. I don't have a problem with either, and ride with balls of my feet on the pegs 90% of the time. Maybe…
- Speaking of tools... That is a good price for that box. I have enough tool boxes I just need to organize stuff better. Still recovering from moving twice in 2023. Gave away some stuff that I wish I had now, but had nowhere to put it then.
- In Dutch, it's called a "Garage" Man Cave? No. Man hangar.
- And so for my next trick... My experience with stanchions like that is if your fingernail catches on it it will take out a seal, but fine polishing will make some pretty large pits acceptable. As mentioned use protection, and lube when installing…
- 5th gen maintenance --6th gen and other parts that work on 5th gens I suspect with some strategic digging you could find many more parts common to Hondas in general. Why reinvent the wheel? The Japanese are pretty crafty that way.
- Winter VFR preventive maintenance 13 hours ago, Dutch724 Seeing this has become the subject at hand.... About wheels. I'm torn between Black and Bronze wheels. The bike will be painted Italian red. Is there a shade of bronze or maybe any shade will look…
- Winter VFR preventive maintenance I used paint stripper to remove the black from my 5th gen wheels. It practically fell off unlike the white primer on the 4th gen. That stuff was really stuck! I just give 'em a good polish when I swap new rubber on.…
- And so for my next trick... The only shaftie I've ever been into was my girl's old BMW R1150RT. It was pretty simple as long as you know to heat the final drive carrier bolts to 275℉ to soften the threadlocker on disassembly. They are aluminum so…
- And so for my next trick... I recommend Knipex snap ring pliers. I sprung for a full set some years ago when I tired of fighting with cheapies or improvising. It has been money well spent.
- Speaking of tools... All the Craftsman stuff is made in Chi-nuh now likely in the same factory as many other "brands". Don't overlook the Icon stuff at HFT. I've got a few things that seem to be significantly better quality than the…
- Suggestions for 12v heated gloves under $250 I got the Warm & Safe to replace my aging Gerbings that weren't getting all that warm anymore after many years of use. My Gerbings were pre-chinesium. Yes they lasted that long. I miss 'em. That said I'm reasonably…
- 98 VFR - Is this overheating? Popular swap for those of us who ride 5th gens in warmer climates is to swap to a VTR1000 fan blade so it blows out instead of in. That, and stay above 35MPH.
- 2001 VFR revival Ah, the joys of restoring something that's lived in salt air all it's life. Ugh. I commend you sir. I live far enough from the ocean that corrosion is not an issue, but not so far that things get baked, and coated in…
- rusty crusty 1999 revival I've cleaned injectors by cycling them with a 9V battery while giving them a spray of brakeclean. If you do this don't hold them open very long. Certain types of injectors don't like that. There are also injector…
- And so for my next trick... I always thought of the 7th gen as the gentleman's sport bike. Good job on the restore. She's lookin' good. Good luck with the gubment crap.
- rusty crusty 1999 revival I had a turn signal switch fail a few years ago ( simply cleaning it no longer did the trick), and it was NLA then. Ended up getting a used one from Duc2V4.
- 5th gen maintenance --6th gen and other parts that work on 5th gens The Gen-Mar bar risers on my work 5th gen came from the 4th gen I had. Same fork diameter. I just had to round off the heads on the locator bolts so they would sit flat.
- And so for my next trick... IME you can have some pretty good pits in a stanchion as long as they are smooth. Anything deep enough to cause sealing issues can be filled in with JB Weld.
- How many motorcycles have you owned? Captain 80s, 9/18/2025 at 2:14 PM Affirmative. I'm a fucking idiot, that gets progressively more brilliant after each beer/whiskey while in my shop. Dude you are the Howard Leese of Hondas.
- How many motorcycles have you owned? Latest pic of the play bike since it didn't load for some reason: [image: IMG_2514.thumb.jpeg.ed19d23002b52dd1344a358bfe3e4d05.jpeg]
- How many motorcycles have you owned? In order of appearance: '87 ZX600: Got it in '98 partial trade for a '72 Mazda B1600 with a Ford 2.6 V6 swap. Sold it in '09 after I finished the bodywork/paint. '93 GTS1000. Got in early '09. Crashed it on the track…
- rusty crusty 1999 revival Somehow I've missed this thread. Good job so far. That blocky looking thing in the main harness just in front of your new R/R is a ground junction block. You should unwrap it, and make sure there's no corrosion going on…
- 5th Gen. 98' VFR800 w/ stock OEM seat.. painful to ride. 6', and I'm OK with the stock seat. Hate Corbins they feel like they are made of ABS. When I bought my last bike with the Sargent I rode it up from San Diego 2 hrs, and thought I'd made a mistake. Took the peg lowering…
- 98 VFR - Is this overheating? That on the high end for sure. Was the fan running? Lots of time under 35MPH, and/or idling?
- Another Thermostat/hose & Throttle body job (Minor refresh, brakes rebuild, wheels powder coat) Get the Icon. It's softer, yet more robust. I had a Pittsburg, and it disintegrated.
- Another Thermostat/hose & Throttle body job (Minor refresh, brakes rebuild, wheels powder coat) Do yourself a favor, and ditch the rubber mallet/wood block for a dead blow hammer. You can thank me later.
- Another Thermostat/hose & Throttle body job (Minor refresh, brakes rebuild, wheels powder coat) +1 on Captain 80's. I actually have several tools I've modified like his. A long shaft medium sized flat blade, a small short shaft flat blade, and a small angle pick. The edges are all polished so I can manipulate…
- 1998 vfr clutch plates You can pull it apart, and inspect them. If you do it on the sidestand you may not even lose enough oil to be a problem. Sometimes all they need is a little sanding to break the glaze, and new springs.
