The grand old ladies of Europa (Elbe, Danube, Rhine etc) are making themselves known again these days. River floodings are as old as the Egyptians. While living in a floodplain brings risk, living close the the water will attract commerce and thus housing... Which then must be balanced with building defenses against high water.... Not as bad as in Central Europa, the floodplains next to the river's shipping channels are under water in NL too. An inconvenience for the farmers who must bring their cattle inside the dikes, and the holiday makers who must move their caravans... Water management a dutch speciality, so I'm not worried.. Took a ride in the Zaltbommel area yesterday, a city along the river Waal (main artuary of the Rhine). The water defenses here are designed to withstand water levels up the the flat left hand. 8.87meters above NAP (sea level) [image: natte voeten]
