A New Door Opens, A Vf500Fii

So I did sell my 5ht gen, the farewel topic here: http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/80498-a-farewel/

I had plans the just rebuild the XT600 Tenere I did buy last year, and may add a 1986-89 VFR750F to the garage some later.

That what I tought, then as I browsed some sale sites for VFR750s as I was bored at work, I did find this on a Dutch site:

A 1985 VF500F2 registred in early 1986, only ~39k kms (~24k miles) on the odo and did look very clear in the pics. Prize 850€ (~900$), Its a bike I almost did buy back in 1997, but as a friend worknig at a bikeshop told me VF was bad, VFR was good, I did not buy it (eventualy did buy a Kawasaki GPZ500S (EX500) instead).

Did sleep over night, next evening I did send a PM to Dutchy.

He did call the seller, set a appointment to go and see the bike as it was close.

So as Dutchy had seen the bike, ridden it etc, he did call me and tell me yesterday, there was only one thing wrong whit the bike, he would like to buy it for himself! Buy fortunally he has no space for 2 bikes, and so he did buy it for me and drove it home to keep in his garden untill I will pick it up! Hopfully your wife is understanding :biggrin:

I now have a airplane ticket for May 1st to Amsterdam, then May 2nd I will hit the road and ride that nice bike home to Finland!

Yes, Dutchy is a nice fellow!

It will be a ~1700km (1050 miles) ride trip home + a 12 hour ferry trip in betwen (after 1550km). I have goal to be home evening of Sunday May 3rd if all go as planed.

That engine is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, it runs smoother than my 4th gen......

Kept her under 7k rpm; I will let Keny thrash her while playing that Prodigy's famous song on his earplugs...... :cool:

1st registered in March 1986 (that is when I started working with -still- my employer).

Ha, I do have a old mag from 84 whit a test ride of a VF500, and yes, its a bit thirsty if you keep the throttle pinned, did leave the test rider whit a empty tank in less than 200 km, as he forgot the fuel tap in reserve. That on twisty bit and high engine revs. Ride steady whit normal road speeds and it will use about 5,5l/100km (or 52 miles a gallon) so I have forcast 200-250km legs between fill ups on way home to be on safe side. I will not ride to hard speed on the motorways I think...

Yes, I can´t wait to see it for real myself. Looks to good to be, but I do trust Dutchy.

Funny thing is I wanted a RWB 1986 VFR750/700F, but this I could not just pass. Good thing is that it will make a classic where I live next year, so insurance will be very low after that (~30€/year), but whit a usage restriction (30 days a year). But I don´t ride that much, so its enough. And the days I ride I dont have to report somewhere, even my neighbors might.......

I do have to say I also like the one whit a top faring and just a bug spoiler under engine, shows the engine better actually, but this color combination is the best by far I think.

Will be a loooooong week...............

If anyone in the UK is looking for one of these, my old one is for sale by the mate I sold it to, circa £1000.

Not quite as good as that one, but has upgraded oil supply system & CBR600 17" wheels along with the original Comstars.

I think he might have had it fall over since i sold it to him but not sure of the damage or current condition as I've not seen it for 10 years.

That's a terrific find! I still have an 1984 that's sitting in my garage but needs a motor or rebuild of the motor. That looks absolutely mint!

Amazing condition for its age--very nice find. I owned one just like it for about a week! Bought it in London for a 4-month tour of Europe, but after a shake-down trip out to Land's End I chickened out of taking a 500cc chain-drive bike on such a lengthy adventure. It was my first bike, my first tour and I would certainly have been in way over my head. But 25 years later, I wouldn't hesitate to take a small bike like that on a tour now, so your riding it back to Finland should be fine if it's fully serviced and ready to go. Have fun!

Safe on Dutch soil, a familiar guy showed up at the airport and gave a lift by VFR to where the VF500 is parked........thanks Dutchy!

Well, keny, v4 rosso amd myself did a 145km shake down tour. Especially for keny who had to get familiar.

one slightly sticky brake piston was dealt with.

Now a good six and a half hours kip, breakfast and the Viking will be leaving for his just a tad under a thousand miles to his ferry. 24 hours to do it.

The night riding I Sweden was crazy! 640km of what 400 was wet or soaking wet roads whit close to zero C temps and serious visor fog problem! A more detailed story whit pics in a near future. And seem I have a iron but, not sore at all!

Keny raided Holland and got home with a beautiful vf500f so he was going viking :tongue:

Well I was too tired ? as I got home yesterday for a comment here and to busy at work today to, but the VF is in my garage now after spending last night outside and I had to take ice from the seat this morning as I left for the ride to work where it got Finnish documents for it and now wait for the tax quote to finally get Finnish license plates. The vf will sit in the garage untill then and I need to get a new chain, tires as a fuel tap vacuum repair kit as starter.

All standard maintenance issues. If a chain is too old,the grease will deteriorate and no longer function as a lubricant. So when used the chain will wear in a very short time.

The membrane from the duel tap will become hard andere tear when in use. And after 1600 miles of highway a tire may be worm.

After fixing this probleem you have a beautiful classic Honda.

Well the rear tire had only 2mm of tread left as I started the trip, is just a tad (0.1-0.2mm) abow the wear bar now, but as its DOT stamped 398<, its just to replace.

I think I will have a nice summer whit this, but a bit busy right now, so even a topic of the trip home have to wait..........

Man, the fuel tap. Every VF500 on the planet needs a new one. The only flaw in that bike.

Other than that, what a great way to get to know your bike.

OK, thanks for the opening Leon.
Saturday morning I head towards Germany and had first fuel stop just before German border, only made 140km just to see what the fuel consumption would be. First was 6,7l/100km, so quit high!
Next stop was in Germany, about 30 km south of Bremen in Germany, after the VF500 clock had turned 40k kms at the crossing of E30 and A1 88km before. Bike was running great, and fuel consumption was now down to 6,0l/100km :smile:

Then I started to lube the chain and suddenly I noticed not a nice thing :blink:

The chain lock clip was missing, and I had not even been speeding. I know the bike had a "cheap" chain, read no o-ring one, and a bike like this would need a chain whit a proper chain lock. I was in deep s___t.............. Called Leon, and he found out the cosets plase to get a chain lock was Bremen and Louis shop, slowly I did ride there..

The chain did not look that good at close inspection, came rust from it!

So at Louis I first asked for a new chain, becorse it had stretch a bit alredy. They had non in stock, and as they didn`t stock Iris chains, only DID, they didnt want to sell me a chain look for the wrong brand. I had a explane 15 min that I just need the clip and they have no responsability selling it to me. Eventually got it, and had to buy a tool to get it mounted also. But all was not ok by this, becorse on my way to Louis, 11km after the fuel stop, the odo/speedo did stop work. Louise didnt have a new cabel in stock, so I had to just ride distanse by the navigater from now on. So I´m on the road again and had passed Hamburg at 1pm. Time for next fuel stop.

The north towards Danmark where I arrived 4.30pm.

I must say Danmark was the best part of the ride home (aside the nice ride on Friday whit Dutchy and V4 Rosso that could come home erlier to make the Friday meet and ride) Even I was just doing motorways the wiews where nice, actually wild life came almost to close at one moment where a deer was eating just at the edge of the motorway tarmac!

At Nyborg I had a longer Fuel stop and also did fuel myself at 6.30 pm. Only warm meal of the day!

Just after Nyborg I had this wiew:

Storabelt bridge. And some 130km later it was the next bridge betwen Danmark and Sweden, Öresunds bridge, ~900km done at this point.

At that bridge the bike started struggle for fuel, and eventually did die, so I rolled to the road till station, payd the toll and pushed the bike to the parking lot and see what can be done. Eventually the vaccum pipe betwen the fuel tap and engine had gone brittle and leaked. The accumulator owerflow tube was same size, so I did borrow it and I was on the road again!

It was sunset and the night ride part begun. I had 640km left to Stockholm! Time 22pm. Well it had rained in Sweden that evening, so of the 640km about 400km was on wet or soaking wet roads. Not so nice on 15 year old rubber.....less so as temps at times where just around freeze! I had a visor fog problem, looks like pin-look was so worn it was not tight to the visor! So vision was not the best, but I held the dry wheel lines if possible. Here a pic from a night fuel stop.

The pic is not that sharp as you can see, my hand where shaking, it was just so cold, I was ice to the bone it felt!

Eventually the sun started to rice and I came to Stockholm 5am Sunday morning. 1 hour to spare to the check-in that start at 6am.

Had a shower as I got on board, breakfast and then got to the cabin for a 5 hour sleep.

Getting closer to Turku and Finland the wiews are rather nice

And the ferry was in Turku 7.15 PM Sunday, and I then had a 150km ride home so I was at home 9pm, tired but happy whit a bike that I had ridden ~1550km in 24h and totally 1850km in 3 days, so almost as mutch as it had been ridden in 2 years, 2k kms .

I got home, the chain did not stretch to much, even I had to shim the center stand a bit so chain did not rub it. I did not have tools along to adjust the chain! the rear axle tool was missing.......

The bad vaccum tube came handy for that whit a zip tie, was done during night ride in Sweden

So I´m now a happy owner of a nice VF500FII that needs some love, like new tires, chain and a fuel pet repair kit :cool:

The rear tire, that had 2mm of tread left is just at the wear bar now, so hold up better than I would have belived!

Heard plenty of stories of missing clips, especially when the chain has stretched a bit, asto me it looks it has stretched quite a bit compared to what it looked like on friday.

I did check the clip I installed in Bremen during every stay, and it did hold all way home. Its time for a new chain, thats for sure, a O or X ring and proberly a rivet linked...

I had to turn the adjusters at the rear of the swing 5 ½ turn to get it somewhat adjusted, still quite loose as its uneven stretched during the length

That chain had no grease left inside the rollers. This kind of chain need to be put in a can of heated grease every 1500 k. That explains the clip lock, because every 1500k you have tot remove the chain for greasing. Without grease the chain is gone in one long road trip.

Yes, its a non o-ring chain, mostly used on race bikes as low cc(125cc and smaller) bikes, becorse it has low inside friction (=rob less HP). The back side it needs careful lubrication regulary, best the way you describe. I do think that sinking that chain in a hot grease bath would not had help, becorse it looks like it been washed but not oiled after so water had been sitting in it and damage done. Just rust poring out of it tells that. I did lube it every stop I made (9 in total) and the 4 last stop it didn´t stretch any or very little, most it did stretch the 3-4 first stops. So I guess lube got in it after all to stop it wear further. It will be replaced whit a O or X ring chain for a longer life whit more ease. What has crossed my mind is if there would be sprockets to make a 520 convention....

That brings back memories. Years ago i used to do that with my chains. Made by a company called Renolds http://www.renold.com/. Used to come in a big cake like tin then heated. In my case on my mums cooker, she used to go tits at the smell. Chain was basically soaked in molten grease then taken out and allowed to solidify. Very messy job!

Keny noticed that the licence plate holder has been painted over and we could make out the name of the dealership 2 miles from my house. :goofy:

So as V4 Rosso and Keny went upstairs to oggle and fondle the NR, I had a chat with the service manager who looked up the service history.

Showed that the bike 1st came in in 2003 for regular service and a new front tire. That must have been the Meztler ME33 that is still on the VF!

(wonder why they didnot change the 1998 rear, but hey, it held up ok!)

Just one more service was recorded, the bike was never in for needing something repaired or fixed.

But now I have the cure for the old tires, as I got these today

Tires mounted, needed zero weights! Actually just needed to remove the old weights from the front wheel. So good quality on the Bridgestone BT45s! I was first for to get Metzeler Larestecs, but got these locally so got them. So far happy, and had a short shakedown (I know Dutchy, I told it will not be ridden until in Finnish plates...), feels nice! But the bike is struggling for fuel as about 10l is used of it. lean it to the left and it keep on going. Time to take off the tank and its fuel tap...

You still have Dutch plates and insurance cover so ride all you like.

Any speeding tickets coming to my home address I will send on to you :-)

Well immaculate is a bit overkill (as usually pics make all seem nicer), but its sure a clean bike whit a few signs of usage. Sorry, not for sale!

An update, as I did spend a few hours in the garage.

The speedo cable snapped is confirm, a good new as I only need a new cable, bad new is no shop in Finland has it in stock! Well there is one on the way....

Possibly! You can sometimes tell from the frame number where the bike was originally sold, but you may have to put together a bunch of clues and make your best guess. Swiss models were often significantly different than other European models (e.g., Swiss laws forced the RC30 to be delivered with a single headlight!) and were often emissions restricted as well. It would be useful to know the bike's origin in case you need to order parts in the future.

According to info from a other site, its possible by the frame number its a Swiss bike, but could as well be a bike from any other region of Europe but Spain.... The Swiss VF500FII has different Carb. ID from the rest of European market bikes, so can be some restriction, but it still has 52kw power, so same as claimed full power. So rise a question if someone has worked on Swiss ground and did bring a bike there to get it toll free? (don´t know if other countrys has that policity, but Finland had, until this year) The seller, as small bike shop, clam to Dutchy that the bike is a Dutch spec bike.

And the Finnish bikes of early 80´s also has strange restrictions for headlights so all official VF1000R and CBX750F had single headlights in Finland, Law changed in 1987 I recall so the bike could have 2 headlights but only low beam in one of them.

As I posted in a other topic, even intention was here, some work is done, like new chain on, the Clutch has new seal both M/C and slave cylinder, was not to soon!

Today I started whit the Fuel tap, and could just say mine has a 1986 style fuel tap, and the repair kit I did order was wrong :unsure:

But the bright side is that it seem OK, just some dirt in there. Now what still is a mystery is why the bike starve for fuel as the tank has lost bout 10l of fuel? I did change the vacuum horse to the fuel tap as I got home, still the bike did starve for fuel, come alive as I did let the bike over to left side. Hmmm.... Hopfully the small amount of dire in there is the reason and it will run fine now, it should have a 15,5 liter tank as a 1986 spec bike, even frame number say its a 1985....Swiss bike?

Thanks, I have to find a parts catalogue I guess.

For the dirt, it was on the vacuum side of the fuel tap, so I guess its got stuck in the tinny hole and shut the fuel tap (I hope my theory is right).

The screen/filter that is in the tank/at fuel tap was clean and nice.

Is it like on the VTR250 selector? With the face seal? That repair kit is just for the vacuum. Vacuum from one cylinder opens the fuel line. You can test to see if it works by using a vacuum pump (MityVac hand pump works great). The face seal hardens, deteriorates, and gets filled with gunk.

Had the stock vacuum petcock fail on the 599 (Hornet 600 for Europe). Decided to scrap the whole thing and put on a manual petcock. This may be an option for you if the petcock is accessible so you can manually turn it on and off. I used a pingel unit that fit on the stock 22mm threads. Not really sure how yours mounts, but they make a variety of different fuel tank outlet fitments. There may be something less expensive and more local for you though.

An update.

Did run one tank almost dry, then next did struggle for fuel again, and as I did fill the tank, 9,3l is all it did take...........

And still wait for the front calipers seal kit as the company I did order them from made a big mistake......

But other than that I really just like the bike! well its no HP monster but a sweet ride and has amazing handling on the twisty bits!

An update.

A Sherlock Holmes work did let me know the VF500F has same seals in both front and rear calippers, so now I have 2 rear kits on the way from same company as it had them in stock. :cheerleader:

I have an air filter and a petcock repair kit (switched to OFF it doesnot stop the flow of petrol) coming in, so I will drain the tank on mine as well and see what I can see...

As for engines blowing up, I re-read a one page summary from Practical Sportbikes, a magazine regarded as "in the know" no? They mentioned a few weaknesses of the F2, but valves were not mentioned.....

The PO of my VF (and the PO before that) claim always to have used fully synthetic oil so that is what I will continue; hoping that this "better" oil contributes a a longer life..... (beats burning incense in front of a Ganesh statue.....) :goofy:

I would save money and burn incense...

But the RWB VF500 is a stunning looking bike, and a great ride as long as it runs :warranty:

Talking off, I did open the rear valve cover last night also, all but right side intake wes smooth, the right side intake had some minior scratches, like been out of lube, and its the last of the 4 to get oil....an oil convension kit do sound right, but like in a other topic in older VFR section (that turned from a oil mod discussion to a drop valve discussion) the kit is not recomended for some reason for the 500 By some, I just wounder why?
