So my 2002 VFR is making a "poomp poomp" noise randomly at idle. I noticed it about a week ago at a stoplight and it seems to have gotten worse. I don't seem to be losing power, but my gas mileage was 28 at my last fill up! It also only seems to come from one pipe.
Spark plugs? The bike only has 10k miles, you would think they'd be fine. This is caused by running to rich right?
Not sure what you are describing.. The title says exhaust, but the sound and condition you explain sounds like a a misfire popping through your airbox.
Firstly, the bike had 7500 miles when I purchased it, since March I've brought the mileage to 10k. So it hasn't been sitting.
The popping noise is coming from one exhaust pipe, it doesn't seem to come from the airbox, but I'll check it anyway. I'm open to any suggestions, this fuel mileage is horrible.
I can't remember it happening before I was at the track last month, maybe something vibrated loose? If one cylinder wasn't firing it would be pretty obvious I would think right?
Have a good look for air leaks on your system at joins & were headers connect to heads, air leaks are the most common cause of off throttle popping.
Yeah, if you weren't firing on one cylinder at all you'd be way down on power, and your bike would sound like a WRX. Throw a set of fresh plugs in it, I remedied the same problem that way on an old Suzuki GS I had.
What a coincidence....I had a slight misfire too and suspected that it could be bad plugs. Cleaned up the plugs but the problem persisted. I decided to change out the plugs yesterday and it seems like the misfire is gone.A good test ride this weekend will determine if the fix is holding......

A crack in the insulator can go unnoticed, but wreak havoc on a plug's operation. Good luck!
And for what it's worth, a 2002 model with only 7,500 miles has been sitting around quite a bit :wink:

I just had my fuel pressure regulator fail on my 2002. It ran REALLY rich as the fuel was getting sucked past the diaphragm into the vacuum system...you could smell the fuel in the exhaust. In this failure mode, you will notice it being WAY down on power but it was popping and sputtering. Also, it was hard starting without opening the throttle a bit to give it some air. After sitting overnight, the one of the front two cylinders was hydrolocked with fuel that drained in there overnight.
This could be the issue if its a less dramatic leak than I had.

Yeah man it actually was the fuel pressure regulator. I took the vacuum line off and as soon as I turned the key to on fuel came dripping out.
I've ordered a new one from bike bandit for 50 bucks. I'm so glad I figured it out and it was cheap to fix. Mine wasn't quite that bad (yet), but I could definitely smell the fuel in the exhaust, and at the track I had to open the throttle to crank it a couple of times.
Replaced the fuel pressure regulator today. Small gas spill, wrangling with the tank and she's back together. Idle seemed more stable now and best of all NO POPPING
