Did Not Want To Turn Over Until Put Into Neutral - Sixth Generation VFR's

Hey gang.  I wanted to put this out there to see if I should be worried and to see if anyone else has had the same problem. 

Went into a cycle gear store up here to replace a set of gloves that I had and came back out and tried to start up the '07 veefer.  Had the kickstand up, turned the FI lever on and pushed the start button and nothing.  Did this several times and nothing.  Turned biked off, put kickstand back down and put it back up and pushed the start button and nothing again. 

The group of kawasaki ninja riders that was admiring the veefer suggested to put it into neutral and voila.  They said it happened on their bikes as well. 

Any insight?  Just trying to head off any issues before they come.  The bike has 4,500 miles on it.

My guess would be either the sidestand switch or the clutch lever switch is stuck/fubar. You don't by chance have the shorty clutch lever do you?

Nope, just the regular clutch lever.

My VTR1000 did the same thing, the micro switch on the clutch failed.

It's an easy fix, Check the wires to the switch are good, that the clutch lever is contacting it properly.

Alternatively

1. Replace the switch

2. depending whether the switch is N/O or N/C. short the wires or cut them.

Note that with option 2 the bike will then be able to started while in gear without the clutch in.

Pull the wires off the clutch "safety" switch. I think that will disable the switch and the bike will start if the switch is the problem. Dunno about the sidestand switch.

Check wires at clutch these do come off and it will not start until neutral very common with aftermarket levers as well .

Failed to mention that the clutch lever was a replacement as the previous owner laid it down in his garage....told me it was a non honda replacement but looks exactly the same as the oem on the right.  I will look at the cables tonight and evaluate it if it needs any adjustment.  Thanks!

Not uncommon a problem with Honda road bikes...... The clutch lever micro switch failed on my Honda Hawk GT once too because of corrosion from exposure to rain/moisture while riding. The part should be always available at dealerships and should be a very quick and easy fix like it was on my Hawk.... Why the don't design a more waterproof/sealed enclosure for the switch is kinda weird.....

My 5th gen did that when I got it. A little electrical contact cleaner and about 5 mins later it was fine. Cleaned the wires where they met the switch and sprayed Deoxit (its a switch and contact cleaner) into the switch around the little post. that was a about 10k ago and it hasnt happened again, might be worth a try

If you don't pull the clutch lever in ALL THE WAY it will do that. All the way is in it can go no further.
