Hello everyone. Just joined the group so a bit of a newbie so my apologies if this has been covered before. I have recently bought a VF500, UK type with full fairing. Motor seems pretty good but bodywork pretty grim. I have removed lower fairing halves but ..... how do you get the top fairing off?

Any help much appreciated, and thanks in advance.

You need to take the two lower bolts out of the screen, and the headlight is held into the top fairing, so you need to undo 4 dome nuts that hold the headlight onto the front fairing bracket.

Hope that helps!

I actually worked it out for myself before your response, but I did think it probably would be you that would reply. I had looked at the previous thread about your restorstion of a VF500 F2F, the same as I have. I bought mine a few weeks back and and starting to sort it out. The fairing is pretty grim and needs a lot of work. I'm probably get a fibreglass one made so I can use the bike while the original is being fixed. Mine is very good mechanical but body a bit rough.

How did you get on with regard to the dzus fasteners on the fairing?

Any help or tips with regard to a reestoration would be greatly appreciated

Regards

I actually replaced the Dzus fasteners on mine. The screws are available from Honda, I'll dig out the P/N for you.

As for the parts that rivet to the lower fairing, they are standard Dzus parts, available from eBay. I was pleasantly surprised at their availability!

Looking forward to seeing pics of yours as you progress with the rebuild!

Thanks GAZ

Not being rude, I've not been on the site for a while. As I said, I did work out how to get the fairing upper off and have started repairing the fairing and the seat cowl that had a broken lug. Thanks for the information on the Honda studs. Not too sure as to what to do. I found them but at about £10.00 a pop I think I might go for Dzus fasteners all round.

I'm also in a bit of a quandary as to what to do with the bike generally, in as far as the mileage is pretty low (25K) and the engine seems fine, and I am only the second owner. I am thinking now just to make the fairing secure and use it next summer 'as is', but would like to do as you have and put 17" wheels on it, re-spray, new decals if I can find someone to do them as there doesn't seem anyone doing them as 'stock', et al, et al!

I am still working on restoring my Suzuki X5 and the trouble is — I don't know when to stop!
