8Th Gen Tail Tidy

Has anyone found a fender eliminator / tail tidy for the 8th gen yet ? I have been search online for a little while now with no success. I am interested in what other 8th gen owners may have found.

Like this, its a Competition Werkes fender minimizer kit. Its stainless steel and made for the vfr1200. You just have to cut the tab off of the top to make it fit the vfr800. The OEM piece drops off with one bolt. I used these smaller reflectors to mount it. Since I took the 2nd picture I replaced the plastic OEM bolts with 2 more reflectors.

I think we need an undertail to get rid of those ugly pannier brackets which spoil the look of the rear end IMHO.

I agree with you on that. At least there should be some way to unbolt and remove them if you arent using them.

SHvar seems to have found a good solution. I might get one of those. But will hit it with some flat black Cerakote before mounting.

Also want to dump the Schwinn bicycle reflectors hiding the front calipers, but the right one has the cable clip for the abs ring pickup integrated, need to work out a solution for that. (Reaches into tool kit for the Dremel...)

House found this solution, in fact this one on my bike came from him, it was the extra one he had. Amazon also sells the same product maybe a tiny bit less, Im not sure. Give him credit for this one.

They are hung up on the tab that I cut off right now and fear that the two side bolts won't be enough to get the insurance folks satisfied. They want to keep the tab I removed and mount that to the light or reflector right now (which is possible.) More to come

Quick Public Service Announcement:

I know lots of us hate the way the reflectors look. All those reflectors are there because they are mandated by federal law. And many states incorporate that law by reference into their own laws regarding required lighting and visibility features. And when police in some municipalities become hungry for revenue and eager to hit their quotas, they sometimes write tickets when they discover those reflectors are missing.

Reflectors aside, the thing that nails most consumers when it comes to tail tidy kits is lack of license plate lighting or failure to hook it up. Buyer beware!

Interesting thought on the reflectors, I ditched mine long ago. I do have an LED on my licence plate, I had heard of random tickets for no lights and want no part of that!

Keep in mind the license plate frame made by competition werkes does not eliminate the light (you can see it in my photos), in fact the plate is in the same position as the OEM plastic plate holder (maybe a hair closer to the license plate light actually), you are just replacing the plate holder that has the long sail looking fender.

I keep reflectors on my bike so that other drivers have a better chance of seeing me, also because they are required in most places by law. I see alot of tail tidy kits on bikes and plate frames that are illegal for on road use because they eliminate too much required equipment, or those that are installed incomplete to eliminate required safety equipment on purpose.

Same on my bike.... CW is worried that the reflectors might come loose and you would lose your tag, but I don't see it happening. The way SHVAR and I have them mounted is legal (in GA at any rate.)

Two Dollar Tail Tidy

The blue thing is a stud mount electrical box from True Value Hardware. Cut, painted & drilled as appropriate, it fits snugly without hardware, which I now have to get from the hardware store. Nuts, bolts flat & lock washers should do the trick.

Lighting not affected, & I may use the side reflectors as part of the final mount.

I just received a reply from R&G, they aren't planning to do one for the 2014 VFR any time soon, which is a shame - the quality of their products is really good. Maybe if a few more of us email them? I've started the ball rolling!!

Not much point in a tail tidy when a standard UK plate is this big and the traffic police are very hot on smaller ones that can't be picked up by the automatic number recognition cameras, but at least the only reflector that's required here is the rear red one.

A question for the chaps who've removed their stock rear fender (House & SHvar in particular), did you have any trouble removing it?

I'm having a devil of a time undoing the 2 horizontal allen-key bolts on either side of the fender near the stock reflector. The bolts are so tight that the square plate acting as a nut on the inside ends up just turning with the bolt, having force-rotated its' way through the weak plastic guide fitting.

I think I held the plates still and it came loose without too much difficulty. They do spin if you dont hold them still.

I cant remember if one came off easy by just pressing against it with my fingers, and one I clamped a vice grip to hold it against the surface behind it. Its been a while now. I wonder if yours was not threaded correctly in the first place?

I've completed my design for a tail-tidy/fender eliminator specific to the 2014+ VFR-800. I'm now in the process of prototyping it. My design includes a High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) film reflector to satisfy the roadworthy requirements of most places - oh and the reflector will have the VFR logo-type on it. The plate mount will accommodate Australian, US, & UK numberplate sizes (probably others as well but those are the sizes I checked), and each tail-tidy will be made from 2mm aircraft-grade aluminium that will be finished with a weather-proof matte black powdercoat.

Let me know if you'd be interested in one; larger production volumes will naturally drop the per-unit price. VFRD discourages advertising and fair enough, but my goal here is to provide something that enhances the look of our bikes that's so far missing from the marketplace.

Just curious, what is the reason for the extra 44mm tapered part extending below the plate? I would prefer nothing visible below the plate. Other than that, I like it and would be interested in getting one.

Great question, and your assumption is correct - it's to support long UK plates, and jurisdictions where a stone-guard of minimum length is mandated. It's also a great place to mount extra reflectors, registration labels, flag, state, or club stickers, or indeed anything else you wish.

To produce 2 versions would increase the production cost, and I'm trying to keep the per unit cost as low as possible whilst still making a quality item that suits the broadest range of our VFR rider community... so I guess it comes down to how much you're willing to pay? Size-wise, my design raises the plate 40mm higher than stock, and cuts the extension below the plate down from 82mm stock to 42mm (2mm of the 44mm extension is behind the plate already).

I can live with that answer. Plus, we can always trim and file that extra bit off, just above the bottom of the plate so you can't see the trimmed edge. I'm still interested, even with only one design for everyone. :tour:

Prototyping Update. Some further adjustments still needed, but overall I'm happy with the fabrication & design. I'm now just waiting on the new reflectors to confirm that everything fits nicely. Then it's full steam ahead with the production batch, powdercoating, and assembly ready for delivery.

Question for those who've expressed an interest:- Are you happy to drill your own numberplate-mounting holes? That way you can tailor it to your specific numberplate size. I've had one-size-fits-many tail-tidies in the past, but they never seemed to fit the spacings I wanted to use for my mounting bolts. The material is 2mm aluminium, so a battery drill with a metal or riveting drill-bit will do the trick.

Not a problem for me, make sure people use a punch first to keep drill from wandering.

Update:

The two Mk.1 prototypes that I made have been sent out for testing by forum members, and already some good feedback has been received for incorporation into a production batch. Overall I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out.

At special request, I converted the Mk.1s into shorty versions like the one seen below/right. My original plan was to do the production run articles with enough length to support taller plates (i.e. UK), but unless there's demand for the longer version (see bottom left), I might just do the shorties exclusively... What do you guys think?

If you're keen to order one, now is the time to let me know, and which style you'd prefer. Final price will depend on the style selected and size of the production run.

I'm really happy with my new tail tidy!! It really improves the look of the back of the bike, without looking like a squid with his plate tucked up under the fender. I would call it the perfect, factory looking fender eliminator.

On Monday, I'll contact the laser cutters and arrange for them to commence the production run. Then once I have the components are back, I'll get on to the powdercoaters, assemble, and arrange individual deliveries. If you haven't already, please send me your delivery address via private message or email (nz.cam@hotmail.com).

If you're not on the list but would still like to order one, that's cool too;- the production batch will be for 24 in total. BUT, once those are gone, that's it. I designed and organised these as a service to the VFR community, but it's not my day job. Please also note too that they come undrilled as far as numberplate placement goes. You'll need to drill your own holes, but on the positive side, you'll have absolute surety that the holes match your specific plate.

Update:

The production batch is back from the laser-cutters, so this weekend I completed the riveting, welding, and tolerance testing. Next, they're off to the powder-coaters, then it's just a case of sticking on the reflector logos and mailing them out.

This is what a legal-minimum-size UK plate looks like on Cam's tail tidy. Still a bit of an air-brake but not as bad as it was! Thanks mate.

Replaced the captive plates inside the tail with locknuts & washers. I was having problems getting them tightened as the plates kept spinning once removed from their slots in the OE plate holder so it was much easier to get a spanner in there onto a nut.

Looks good mate. What's the green thing under your rear-seat/cowl key-lock at the back?

It's a sticker for Datatag which is an anti-theft database used here in UK. http://www.datatag.co.uk/motorcycles.php Because it's on the flat surface below the tail light it's edge-on in that picture which is why it's just a green line.

Datatag works in conjunction with the Master security scheme http://www.masterscheme.org/ which most of the manufacturers have signed up to. It's included in the purchase price of a new bike and all the Datatag chips and markings are applied by the dealer before collection.

It's a completely reversible modification, take you about 5 minutes to swap everything back - just in case you're in any doubt about passing the Warrant Of Fitness inspection.

Yeah, I wondered about that but MoT isn't due until October 2017 so I'm not going to worry about it. The rear reflector rule is just historic anyway, dating from the days of black number plates with silver letters (nostalgic sigh!). Not much point any more with 60 sq. in. of reflective plate on the back!

Mine cost about £8 for delivery if I recall but you might also get £10-15 customs charges as Australia remains stubbornly outside the EU. Worth it though, pics on page 5 of this thread. I bought a new plate and cut it down to the absolute legal minimums (11mm margins) before fitting as well.

Pesky Colonialists indeed. And with continental drift, the cost is only increasing by 0.0001 of a cent every year! Seriously though, I just checked AustraliaPost's postage calculator and was utterly amazed to see that the price to the UK has NOT gone up this year, so still AUD$18.20 for AirMail delivery.

That's what I do on the Australian Customs declaration form;- they're sent marked as a Gift. I don't believe any of the UK recipients have been charged extra upon arrival?

Unlucky, I was not charged anything. Looks a treat, especially with a slightly smaller UK number plate. I can post photos if required. I have kept the old plate and holder for the MOT next year. Fits in 5 mins.

But yeah, neither Carlos nor the 2 other UK recipients on VFRW were charged additional customs tax at point-of-entry. This is why I'm anti-government interference in everything. Expecting consistency, quality of service, or sometimes even justice, is simply beyond a State entity with no skin in the game and no motivation to be accountable.

 Might I suggest you delete the attachment for confidentiality reasons? ;-)  All good, I never doubted you. Based on your advice, I've purposely 'adjusted' the customs value declaration so as not to attract import tariffs, so hopefully no one else gets stung by it.

Mine arrived here in the U.S. a couple days ago...everything looks to be in good shape. Will put it on this weekend and post some pics.

Got the Competition Werks solution sent over.  The tax and duty was a bit of a pain but once I had modified the tab at the top with a Dremel it slotted in a treat.

Used a slightly smaller UK 7 x 5 plate and Bingo.  Looks the Dogs Bo**ox

According to the AustraliaPost website, the current shipping cost to the US & Canada is AUD $15.85, so still the same as last year - but from past experience, AusPost's prices seem to go up at the end of March each year for reasons unknown (Australian FY is Jul.1 to Jun.30). The second production run articles were sold at AUD $70 ea, but that may be subject to change for a third run if the laser-cutting folks, or adhesive reflector suppliers have increased their prices since then.

Great stuff here. Looks great. I have one question. My present bike has a tidy tail modification. When I ride it in the rain which I am not averse to doing, it sprays my lower back and causes puddling on my seat. The 8th gen is my very possible next bike. It looks as though there is enough of the rear fender preserved to keep the spray down even with the tidy tail. Any information on how it performs in the rain would be appreciated.

 I ride year-round, and have never had a problem with spray;- as you correctly observe, the length of the tail prevents any rooster-tailing above about 30-degrees from horizontal.

Which is why a lot of UK riders risk of fines, et'c to run smaller plates. I used a woodworking plane and trimmed mine down to the smallest possible area that can still house the legal sized lettering.

I haven't been stopped yet but if I do... "it was like that when I bought it guv' honest !"

I've done exactly the same. Though most people think the standard manufacturer's blank of 9" by 7" is the 'legal' requirement, there's actually nothing in the regs about the size of the plate itself. If the letters and numbers are on two lines, the legal character size with the correct spacing and margin, your plate's legal.

There's been a rush of people keen to snap up a tail-tidy from Production Run #3. I've ordered extra, but if you want to be added to the list, please send me an email, along with your delivery address. First confirmed, first served. :-D

 Some good news - The parts have been picked up from the laser-cutters, and Saturday I did all the edge-filing, riveting, and tolerance testing. The assembled tidies are now with my contact who does the spot-welds and powder-coating, so fingers crossed he can slot them in with another order's run of satin-black finishing (to keep the cost as low as possible), and get them back to me within a week or two.

Once that's done, I'll send out the PayPal invoices to everyone that's PM'd me with their email and shipping addresses, to let you know that your reserved tail-tidy is ready to send. In the mean-time, please also consult the online How-To fitting guide in the forum. A copy will be sent with your tail-tidy, but it's a good idea to check your factory mounting and look for signs that Loctite was used BEFORE your accidentally warp the plastic guide and make things harder for yourself!

Installation was straight forward and supplied instructions were a nice touch. I used a Dremel (in lieu of heat) to carve out space for a small wrench to grip the metal nut used to secure the factory fender. I estimate it took an extra 30 minutes to remove it this way, but I didn't feel like heading out to buy a lighter to loosen the Loctite (or whatever Honda uses). Since the fender we are removing is one piece, you can easily differentiate it from the rest of the bike so I wasn't hesitant to cut into it. It worked for me, but buy a torch lighter in advance if you want to follow explicit instructions supplied by Cam.

 It's worth noting that not all bikes have had the loctite applied. Based on the feedback I've received, it seems like about 1 in 7 or 8 bikes have it, the rest are just tool-tight. (Tight's tight.. what's too tight again? ;-) ).  I would carefully check your bike first, see whether the locking nut appears to be resisting, and then decide how best to proceed. Thanks for sharing your experience Greg, and for the feedback. To everyone who's tail-tidy was posted in the week starting June 12th (and whom I've not heard back from), I've sent out an email to check whether yours arrived safely or not. Please check your email and get back to me;- Your satisfaction is important!

Just got it installed - looks fantastic!  It's dark now so I'll try to take some pics tomorrow.  One unexpected benefit is the weight savings.  By adding the tail tidy I shaved just over 9/10 of a pound of dead weight!  I figured it would save a tiny bit of weight but not almost an entire pound.  Here are the precise measurements:

The old fender that was removed weighed 492.4 g (1.086 lb)

Cam's tail tidy weighs only 83.5 g (0.184 lb)

Total weight savings = 408.9 g (0.901 lb)

When weighing the old fender I did include the old rear reflector which is also removed and the nut which holds that reflector on.  Also, I did not include the 2 sets of screws and washers that held the old fender on in either measurement since they are also used to hold the new tail tidy on.

Here's a vid and some pics of my tail tidy.  No need to make fun of my chicken strips - I've already been told I ride like a pussy about a million times  :tongue:

Possible. If you're able to take some pictures of the 800X's fender from all angles, and measure the inside-width of the fitting (the plastic that the fender fits into, should be 86mm), then I could give you an informed guess.

My "day" job is in infrastructure software deployment & project management, and is taking up more and more of my time, never mind having any family time, or side projects. On top of that, my powder-coat contact has retired, so I can't get them professionally finished at mates-rates any more. The minimum commit-to-buy order size would likely jump from 12 to 20 before a 4th production run became viable.

I have a used one for sale, good condition, they stand up well to a UK winter, PM me with your best offer (sorry Uk only) otherwise it goes on eBay.....

Overall sales, probably not - the anecdotal trend I noticed is that tail-tidies tend to be popular where there are smaller number plates to begin with. Our poor cousins stuck with Euro-style airbrakes are under-represented when compared with VFR popularity.

After looking at what was on the market now, I went back to the 1st post on this thread 4 years ago and decided to give  the Competition Werkes VFR1200 Fender Eliminator a try. I ended up taking the middle  license plate light plastic spacer and mounting bracket off, then filling down the plastic bottom ridge where the light housing goes . You have to unplug the license plate light connection then put it back through everything and plug it in again.....no big deal. Everything fits back perfectly with no modifications though if you have a thick license plate frame it would not fit,so I left mine off. Also the reflector goes by....you could stick one on somewhere back there if you have to. I did paint mine with black "plastic dip " spray paint to match the area around as it is bare aluminum from Comp Werkes. It looks great on the bike and like the Comp Werkes Exhaust it's fit and design are #1. I like that you can't see the back of the license plate... to me it has a more clean and finished look to it now .

Two Dollar Tail Tidy

The blue thing is a stud mount electrical box from True Value Hardware. Cut, painted & drilled as appropriate, it fits snugly without hardware, which I now have to get from the hardware store. Nuts, bolts flat & lock washers should do the trick.

Lighting not affected, & I may use the side reflectors as part of the final mount.

Has anyone found a fender eliminator / tail tidy for the 8th gen yet ? I have been search online for a little while now with no success. I am interested in what other 8th gen owners may have found.

Here's the mod I done to mine today. I couldn't find a suitable aftermarket one as well.

I've had NZCAM's excellent tail tidy on my bike for nearly three years now and it's absolutely fine except for the reflective tape with the cool VFR logo. The rain had finally got in there, the red background had discoloured and the tape was lifting at the ends. Ridiculously, the annual MoT test in the UK still requires a red reflector even with 60+ square inches of reflective number plate so regrettably it had to go. I was lucky to find on the net a 1cm by 10cm reflector which just goes in the gap nicely without having to adjust the plate position and doesn't overlap at the ends too much. Looks OK, I think.

I went with the Competition Werkes fender minimizer for the 7th Gen, as well. It works great with minimal modification.

The first thing, the top tab that goes between the LP light and the tail left a gap. The bolt heads on the LP light prevent the LP light from sitting flush with the tab, and the tab is just a smidge further out from the tail. I solved this problem by cutting thin pieces of closed cell foam and filling the gaps, just to keep the dust out. Im sure it’s perfectly fine to have not fill the gaps, no one will ever see it anyways. 

I re-used the OEM side reflectors as the bolts for the side, REFLECTORS ARE FOR SAFETY. 

The second modification would be it removed and didn’t leave a space for the rear reflector, REFLECTORS ARE FOR SAFETY.

I had plans to add extra brake and turn lights, so I incorporated reflective tape into the mounting bracket for the extra lights.

What's the point of a tail tidy if the thing you replace it with is bigger and more gaudy? 

Is anyone making these again? If so id love to order one. The stock thing is ugly and bulky

Hi all, I've gotten several messages lately so I wanted to post an update here.  I've been out of town the past couple weeks on business travel, and Mark recently moved.  We ARE still producing and selling our 3D-printed tail tidies.  I let our eBay quantity drop to zero so there were no purchase/shipment delays while we were out.
