Hi all,
My first real post, I was hoping it wouldn't happen that fast. Picked up a red '99 last night, my first bike ever! Realized on my way to work (left it there as the parking is locked, lit, heated and the building has some security) that I had no turning signals. A few minutes of playing with the switch today revealed two different patterns:
- to indicate left, I have to really push the switch all the way to the left, then it will start indicating when I let it go back to neutral.
- to indicate right, I have to push the switch slowly to the right until the indicators start...well, to indicate. Any movement away from the magic spot, there's a tiny click (typical circuit breaking sound) and no indicators.
Both ways, the switch feels a bit sticky. Disengaging the switch (what's the correct English term for pushing it in to stop indicating?) works, at least there's the regular physical feedback when pressing it.
I test drove the bike two weeks ago, no sign of this issue then. My plan is to open it up tomorrow, inspect and clean the switch. Fingers crossed it only needs a bit of TLC as PO rode it 600km in total over three years...
Anyone else experienced something like this? Any advice I could get is useful, I can hardly see that this should be rocket science but you never know...

Yes, I have had a similar issue on my Y2k VFR800FiY, but only the left-side was affected. Taking the switch unit apart is a lot easier than putting it back together! There is a ball bearing riding on a small spring inside the switch lever that could shoot out when you remove the lever for cleaning, so watch out for that. My particular switch did not respond to cleaning (or I didn't clean it properly), but I have a spare one that I will swap at some point. Good luck.
Ciao,
The turn switch on my 6th gen was getting sticky - felt like some was gummed up inside, though it still activated the signals properly. I shot some contact cleaner in around the stem of the switch and it works beautifully now.
Hello everybody,
i am happy to be a member of this forum. I am a newbie and i also have a problem with turning signals on my 2001 vfr 800. The right indicators flash very fast (left are working fine).
Any advice would be appreciated.
