Whats This Wheel Off?

Hey everybody (:

I keep seeing this design wheel on the viffer. I really like it and think it looks soo much better than the stock 5 spoke.

Whats it off? Are they easy to get hold of?

Cheers!

Ps. The picks off a vfr facebook page. Nice eh? (:

Its off a 3rd gen - 1990 - 1993.

#3

That's a 3rd gen 8 spoke off a 90-93 vfr. Can be found used, but often command a hefty price. I got mine off of eBay a while back for around $250 and I think I got luckier than some.

#4

Cheers guys!

Thats as old as me that wheel! Haha.

I take it its a direct fit? The nuts are all the right distance?

I really want one. Can only seem to find a vfr400 wheel, which looks a completely different fitment and i assume is a different (narrower?) wheel?

No shortage of front wheels, no backs though :(

#5

It's a direct bolt-on. The lug pattern, offset, etc. is the same as a stock 6th gen. ('02-'09) wheel. Keep in mind you'll probably want to get it powder coated (get he wheel checked out first, though). A few years ago this guy took an 8-spoke wheel to the powder coater only to find out (when he had new tire put on) that the wheel wasn't straight and couldn't be fixed.

Cheers for the heads up

I wouldnt be too happy if that happened. Poor guy!

I've set a notification on ebay to tell me when at 'vfr wheel' is listed. So fingers crossed, one day...

#7

I would check Craigslist often as well. Do a "search all of craigslist" and you can search CL ads easily. I found one last week for $120. It will need to be powdercoated but it was straight and cheap. Sometimes you get lucky. Look for salvage VFRs of that year, sometimes people are parting them out.

Yep the VFR400 wheel is a single nut fitment (like Ducs and Triumphs) and is only 4.5" wide.

Your VFRs current rear rim is 5.5" wide, so is the 8-spoker. Good luck with your search!

#10

There was one in the classifieds within the past month that ended up on ebay. It went for $400. Some are really nice like this one was, but others are sometimes in rough shape. Ask questions or for more photos if you're unsure about condition. Good luck with it.

#11

Cheers!

Well im in the UK, which probably knocks my chances down of finding one a lot more.

Dont really want to be paying the shipping from America. Thatd cost me a fortune id imagine.

Will just have to keep lookin about

I'm not fussed about the paint condition, like you say, id get it refurbished anyway. Got a mate that does that for a living so thats no prob.

I'll just have to hope i get lucky i guess ;).

#12

I wanted to add one to my 2004 VFR. When I was looking, all I could find was $400 minimum.

So, I swapped wheels with my 1993, and had the white 8-spoker painted gloss black. I sold my pearl white 1993 with a Gen 6 5-spoker in white. Looked weird, but I got what I wanted for the bike i decided to keep.

I paid 80€ for an immaculate White one a year ago (check my avatar)... keep your fingers crossed.

Here I thought all VFR owners knew where the 8 Spoke wheel was from, but even yesterday a guy riding a silver 6 Gen asked us if the wheels on our 6 Gens (Mine and Rogue's) was stock. I said yes and no, it is stock but not for our generation but for the 3rd Gens. Then I gave him the bad news...good luck trying to find one, at least for less than $300! Also told him to join the forum and keep an eye on the classified section. We'll see if he does

This spell correct is really getting old, thats what I typed....just screwing with ya...thanks D

#22

That's me.

I had both for sale at one point. The Hawk is a show bike/garage queen (also with a center-lock modified 3rd gen VFR rear wheel). I can't get myself to sell the VFR. It's such a great all around bike. My ride today confirmed it once again.

Both brilliantly looking!

It appears you can still get a brand new one.

Any color you like, as long as it's white.

For about $600! :goofy:

And the whole bike is worth how much?

the joy its brings can not be calculated!!!!

#26

The joy bikes bring with boring old stock wheels cannot be calculated either.

The price of a pair of forged wheels, or carbon fiber, is easily calculated.

Or maybe not. If I have to ask how much they cost....

I'd like some, but you know what they say....

Hmm i dont think its that bad. Not sure id pay it but it works out at roughly £381.

When the bikes worth £3500. Thats not a problem. N im sure i wouldnt struggle to sell it in the future.

Maybe tempted at some point, but I'll keep looking for a used one for now

#28

OK, let's just calculate how much joy we can afford, and of what types.

There is an RC30 8 spoke wheel listed on ebay now (not mine or anyone I know). 1 bid, $175, 19 hours left. Would need center lock hardware like rc4six's bike.

#30

One on UK EBAY too.

It comes with a swing arm too for some reason

Looks tatty but would refurb anyway.

However he wants £300 plus postage.

Not much less than a brand new one...

I should probably mention that one bid is not mine nor do I know who's it is. I'd jump on that wheel if I didn't have so many other things on my plate.

Its not the driving mate. I'll drive all day, i dont mind.

Its 600 mile. In my car with the current prices thatd prob cost me roughly £80-90. Something like that

Somehow, he wants £16 postage. Haha.

Currently tryna bargain him down but he wont split the wheel from the swingarm.

Its gonna have to be a good price, or im just not gonna bother

Wow! that's a big difference in cost! But in the scheme of things not too bad I guess. I've seen a few eBay and other classifieds where the shipping is actually more than the cost of the item. I usually don't buy those on principle alone. Sometimes it's warranted, but other times, I think they're just trying to recoup some money.

:offtopic:

I had an instance where it was the reverse, someone paid me to drive to a meeting. I drove 5.5 hours, sat in a meeting for 1.5 hours, then drove back the same day which took me 6 hours. In hind sight they could have just had me "telecommute" but they said they really wanted my physical presence at the meeting, a show of force so to speak. Airfare, car rental for this was going to be astronomical due to the last minute request, as well as inconvenient, as the closet airport was at least 1.5 hours away, hence driving instead. Ironically, by the time the project came to fruition, I wasn't available to do it, so they had to go with another provider. Penny wise and pound foolish I guess.

#37

Aha. Yeah it is quite a way. Id drive it if he payed me, but i dont think thatll happen ;) hsha.

So guys. Advice please.

£250 (377 USD) for a wheel and swingarm off a 1991 vfr 750 Rc36 (that is the right wheel isnt it? Haha). It needs refurbishment but he promises me its straight and true. Worth it? Is that reasonable?

The swingarm is no use to me. Are they worth anything? Or shall i just scrap that and count it as an inconvenience? Haha.

For the whole kit and kaboodle. that seems like a good price, for the wheel alone it's a little high. ~$250 + shipping seems to be the average, and yes that is the correct year.

Good idea

But i want my wheel. I plan on getting a newer 6th gen. 06 or newer (im not sure i 100% trust this one tbh) and will want to obv carry the 8spoke over to the new one. So I'll need my wheel :(.

Im not a good enough salesman to sell a 1 wheeled motorbike at full price. No test rides allowed ;) haha.

Gonna message this guy again tomorrow. If i can get it for £200 I'll take it. Its not gonna be cheap to refurb n what not, but i dont think I'll lose much in the long run?

How wide is that rear wheel? Be aware that there are two versions of the 4-bolt 8-spoke wheel. 4.5x17 qnd 5.5x17.

#62

1990...shit did not know that

#63
duccmann

1990...shit did not know that

The 5.5x17 gen 3 wheel has no lip around the lug bolt holes . . . the narrower 4.5x17 wheel's bolt holes do, as your photo shows.

#64

Look on the inside of one of the spokes and the dimensions will be there.

#65

If the markings are obscured by dirt buildup, you can also measure the distance between the bead seating surfaces.

#66

What was the 4.5" wheel from?

#67
duccmann

1990...shit did not know that

I'm hoping I'm wrong for your sake. But I swear I came across somewhere in my research a couple of years ago that a narrower 8-spoke exists. I may have confused the NC24 wheel, a 4.5x18 wheel. Like Cogswell says . . . measure the distance between the bead seating surfaces.

That's a standard 3G wheel he bought, with the little directional arrows. The 400's all used 18" wheels too, before the '94, then they were all center nut.
