hey I did the search but did not find anything, just wondering if anybody has tried to fit a 8 gen wheel to a 6 gen. I know it is a 5 lug and I would need to replace axle. has anybody tried?
Rear Wheel
Don't think so yet, so do it and let us know!
New wheel and 5-lug hub are about $620 ...
SwitchbladeNew wheel and 5-lug hub are about $620 ...
That seems surprisingly inexpensive...

I thought the same thing .
I wonder if the rear wheel from the 1200 could be bolted to the 2014 800?
I assume the 800 is 5.5" and the 1200 is 6" wide.
Then one could run a 190 on a correct width rim.
Not sure of the PCD is the same, or the wheel offsets are different due to shaft Vs chain.
5 AXLE, RR. 42300-MJM-D00 $141.20
ISK, RR. BRAKE 43251-MJM-D00 $172.01
Forgot you have to replace the rear rotor also.
More like $750 ..
any more good new? lol lucky for me I work at Honda dealer and can buy it at cost all that for $600
so first order of business is to get a axle and see if it fits the bearing carrier, to bad my bike is tucked away for winter, might be a month or so before I can do this... errr
Powder coat the front wheel ?
yea I can powder coat the front wheel
in the perfect world I would swap front wheels too, but guess what it isn't perfect. that might be more than I want to bite off right now
Edited January 9, 2015 by 3dcycleWould the Front wheel off the 8th gen be a straight swap Onto the 6th??
Only if it's the same size.

might be a little to soon to do this, no crashed ones on ebay yet to find out on the cheap lol

Ciao,
If it turns out the hubs are the same specs - the only difference being 5 lugs vs 4, the 10 spoke wheel swap will probably become fairly common.
Interestingly enough, I was just looking up some parts for my 2000 VFR800Fi and I pulled up the parts list for the 2014 VFR800F at the same time. As one would expect the parts numbers are different for a lot of things on the rear wheel listing, BUT, the part number listed for the rear bearing holder (Part 42500-MBG-000) and the final driven flange (42605-MBG-000) is the same for both bikes. I know that there are a lot of other parts that need to match up and other offsets to deal with but if the bearing holder and final driven flange part numbers are the same, it certainly makes you wonder what else is the same, even if the part numbers are slightly different. I realize the similarity in part numbers doesn't indicate that a swap is certain or even possible but since the bearing holder part numbers are the same you would think that the dimensions on the axle shaft and other parts must be similar as well.
gll429YoshiHNSYou mean that 1993 rear wheel?
no he means 8th gen.. thats what this whole thread has been about. stuffing 8th gen parts on a 6th gen..
I thought he was talking about the 8-spoke on Dutchy's bike there.
I do like the 8 spoker looks very nice. but in that instance I was talking about the clutch cover. nice but mine is just fine. I would not mind finding a 8 spoke wheel either. come to think of it my buddy has a white 8 spoke, on his 750 wonder if he would notice a black 5 spoke... hrmmmm maybe not until summer
I just looked up a bunch of parts as well, there are a lot of parts that match up, all the axle bearings are the same. the driven flange and dampners. the hub and carrier come up with different numbers. I found it to be kind of funny though, every time a part matched from 6 gen to 8 gen it also fit the cb1000r.
I wonder how much lighter the 8th gen rear wheel is compared to the 3rd gen rear wheel ?

We should be able to get a weight of the 8th gen wheel from someone???
Nobody bit on my 1200 wheel bolted to the 800 flange post?
They're both 5 bolt.... I wonder if the PCD is the same?
You could probably run a 190/55-17 on the correct sized rim.
I like the 3rd gen 8-spoker, but the 8th gen is pure sex.....

I reckon the Pitch Circle Diameter or Bolt Circle Diameter (You know, the lug nut pattern or distance between lug nuts crosswise) is the same. I measured the CB's at the dealer's once... don't know where I wrote it down though (reckon = disclaimer).
the only problem with the 8 gen wheel is the 8 gen exhaust but on the 6 gen that would be beyond perfect
might have to go to the dark side (8 gen forum) and ask a few questions there.

The thing that has me wondering is the shaft Vs chain. I wonder if the shafty 1200 wheel has a different offset.......
Ahaaa VFR800CANUCK nos I gotcha... Very importantísimo!!
so I went ahead and started ordering parts this week, got the axle coming for the end of the week. hopfully I will be able to get my bike out of storage in the next couple weeks. :)
You all make the 8 gen wheel fit way tooooo complicated.
Take one 5/6th gen axle, remove the studs, re drill & tap to match the 8th gen bolt pattern, pin or weld the studs in place & bolt it on ! Job jobbed.
Next ?
Oh on the bearing holders, you will find they are the same on all Honda VFR models, 400, 750, 800's etc They were also used on the NTV range & by Ducati (no we didn't steal your idea honest !) I think Triumph used them to, but can't say that for definate.
The offset is the only real difference with the axles. When I did my VFR800 to VFR400 axle swap, I only had to machine 2mm off one bearing shoulder on the axle & it dropped in with the correct offset for me to bolt the carbon RC45 wheel in place. Things on the cush drive side were more complex & Ducati & Triumph use different sized spline areas which stops them being interchangeable, never mind, designed & made my own cush drive :)
if only I had unlimited bike money and a machine shop. easy as pie.
did not think swapping axle is complicated, now drilling out current axle to a 5 lug fitment that gets complicated as I believe the axles have little tabs that the studs go through, on the 4 lug axles there are 4 tabs. on the 5 lug there are 5 tabs. so with out being able to machine the parts its is just easier to swap them with the right part... you know for safety sakes.
also if you want to make me the parts needed to so I would buy it from you as long as it does not cost more than $100 shipped to my door.
Local machine shop can be your friend, 2014+ axles secondhand will be hard to find yet, new is quite expensive. I had all the parts for my conversion machined for less than $150. YMMV.
just ordered my axle for $117
plus I hate to say it good machine in my area for decent price non existent.
Edited January 21, 2015 by 3dcycleHey Mo, can you post a picture of your vfr400 swap? Is that 4.5 rear wheel. Thanks
Swapping the parts also means it can be swapped back...
Looking forward to your next report!
Ciao,
got the axle in today, now I just have to sell off some cx500 parts to make room for this... anyone want cx500 parts? going really cheap. I just cant bring myself to throw them away....yet
ok how do I post pictures I have photobucket but I cant seem to post the pictures

there I got it. waiting to get paid for a few more parts, then I should be able to get to my bike.

That axle looks like it has two different 5 bolt PCD patterns... could multiple 5 bolt wheel options be possible?
The other 5 holes look as though the bolts fit through in the opposite direction - possibly to attach the brake rotor.
Yes, the VFR800Fi and VTEC rear discs have four mounting bolts. New disc time! Hopefully, it will align with the existing caliper arrangement...

Depending on the offset you might do well with a 5th gen Rotor. It comes with a Large shim so you May be able to try w or w/o the shim and reDrill. The 6th gen Rotor is no good to you. Can't be reDrilled to a 5 bolt Pattern.

someone must own one that lives in a shat hole that gets snow like me:) I just don't think they want a gen wheel on a 6 gen, that wheel is the best thing they have going for them. lol then its covered by that exhaust....
no matter I will pick away at it. almost have room for my bike to come back home
I have a spare 5th gen axle if you'd like to compare dimensions.
thanks for the offer I may take you up on it. hope fully I can get my bike soon, so I wont need your axle, time will tell.
duccmannHey Mo, can you post a picture of your vfr400 swap? Is that 4.5 rear wheel. Thanks
It was a VFR400 axle so I could mount a BST Carbon RC45 rear wheel with single nut fitting. Would not advise anyone to use the 400 rear wheel !
Have a look in my gallery for pics.
I can grab it off the shelf and measure it anytime.
I suppose it would be beneficial to have any measurements listed, it could be use full info for me now and others in the future, so if you could measure it up. let me know where you get you measurements from on the axle, I will match it on the 8 gen axle. also will do the 6 gen when I pull it out, unless someone beats me to it.
just blazed through this old thread, cant believe its been 1 year already. so this is still not done, but I do have the axle, and brake rotor on the shelf at home. they do fit and line up, I checked this summer. I have the wheel coming should be here tomorrow, but bike is in storage for about 2 more weeks, then I hope to get this done with forks and a shock from Jamie.
Good man coming back to an old thread.. please keep the dream alive and let us know how it works out...
If this swap works as hoped, someone at Honda will probably be wondering why there's a run on 8th gen rear hubs!
Got my wheel today
Ran it by the big boss today, thinking about doing a 8 gen wheel package. As long as I do all the leg work and shipping they will let me do a group buy on these. Don't have a concrete price yet have to look into it more and make sure it's going to fit. But expect I could pass on a 3-400$ savings.

Dang! Just bought an eight spoke today ! So what's the total investment ? And 100% bolt on?
Yeah, another interested party here. How about you throw that naked 8th gen wheel on a scale for us?
will do when I get home, still at work. think the bike will be coming out of storage this weekend so I can confirm it fits.
a rough number for complete package for anyone who wants this set up will be in the $900 shipped, to the lower 48. I will work on getting that ironed out after fitment is achieved :)

Rear Wheel Weight(s)
credit to: www.hondacb1000r.com - except for 8th Gen 10 spoke - 3dcycle

VFR750 8 spoke ('90-'93? something like that) 12 lbs, 11.8 oz
VFR800F 10 spoke (2014-2016) 13lbs 13.5oz
There's another 5 spoke used from '94-'97, but it's 170, not 180 width. Probably lighter, though!
I've got all three wheels and weighed them at my local post office on the same scale.
Perhaps I'm missing something here but, if the new ten spoke wheel is slightly heavier and costs around $900 to fit, what exactly is the point?
I think it's just mostly an aesthetic exercise as the 6th gen and earlier VFRS just do not have the power to take advantage of the 1200's wider/heavier wheel......
I suspect the bike will just end up feeling sluggish and slow, especially in turns.....
Most likely, the 6th gen cannot take it's stock rear wheel and tire to anywhere near their limits......unless maybe one recruits the services of a pro racer to wring the bike for all its worth on a track.
13 pounds?
The 1098s rear wheel in my 5th gen only weighs 7.85 lbs according to the Internet.
And it looks awesome with a 6inch rear on it.

In terms of whether the axles can be swapped, this may be more or less true, but the bearing holders themselves are not necessarily swappable among all Honda SSSA-equipped models. Rather than hijack this thread, I've started a new one here.

Wow, the 10 spoke makes the bike look so much more modern and lightweight - even though it adds a bit. And the wheel itself is very nice looking!
Just like wheels can make or break whether you like the look of a car or not......the problem with bike is that they are way more wheel-specific...........
To each's own - some will like it, some will not. That's awesome that 3d can offer a bolt on kit if it works - most aftermarket rim upgrades are many thousands of dollars, and would only be justified for racing/shedding weight - not touring or just upgrading the look.

Just to add another wheel weight in to the mix.
RC45 6.0" factory wheel = 5200g (11.46lb)
And to top it off the BST RC45 Carbon 5.75" road rim I'm using is 3Kg (6.6lb). The race wheel is lighter, as it uses a magnesium alloy centre.
Surely, you're not going to use the original front wheel with the awesome new 10-spoker? Get out that checkbook!
Ciao,
For now I will be. Need to build up the savings again. Took a year for me to buy the rear. We will see about the front
Went and got the bike out today, up on the lift. Going to let it warm up for a little while before I get going on it. Will take and post measurements When I tear it apart.

had to remove chain guard to get better measurements
old and new axles
this is the only place where I found a big difference in any measurements that I took. the new one is a little longer
so all in all it fits, the threads on the axle do stick out past the nut more than original but I may order a 8th gen nut or stack another stock washer under the nut and it would be perfect fit.
oh and the wheel lip on the new wheel is a little different style then on the 6 gen so it was difficult to get good numbers there but I am pretty sure it is close enough not tot cause any issues
This looks to be the first of its kind swap. Nice job! Looking forward to seeing more photos of it when it's finished.
thanks I was kinda scared that it was not going to work, but now it looks like it will be fine. I wont be having a tire on that wheel for a few days, waiting on a couple of parts for my tire machine, some new plastic anti scratch pads. no scratchy the new wheel.
also I am going to get a new axle nut and the washer under it, It looks like the nut could bottom out on the shaft before getting to full torque. it may not but I don't want to risk it.

yea did not need to have anything machined or pounded on. a couple of my numbers comparing the wheels came out different on each wheel but the lip of the wheel is shaped different causing a mm or 2 difference.
Very cool, good job. Yea you beat what I had come up $$$ wise, this is a deal your way. love that rim.. But I went cheap, and just redid a 3rd gen for now. Like what you've done, congrats being the first to pull it off that I know of.

JZHI saw a Crossrunner at a Honda dealer the other week. Same wheels? (Did the USA get the Crossrunner?)
Ciao,
Nope, but the 1200X CrossTourer is supposedly on it's way here for 2016.
Ah. The Crossrunner is essentially a VFR800F. It was introduced (as the RC60) in 2011, but it was substantially revised in 2015 as the RC80, which means it was developed just after the 8th gen. No surprise, then, that the later version shares the same wheels. (But which "gen" are they, one wonders... )
Ciao,
3D, awesome job. Really beautiful.
Dave
figured I would update this real quick, I have just over 2000 miles on bike with this wheel, no issues. well that's not true, every one I see that rides and some that don't feel the need to talk about my bike when I stop. besides that its all good, you can all start ordering your set up now. :)
That depends, are the fourth gen hubs the same size?
The 5th-gen axle is about 5mm longer than the 3rd-4th. It otherwise fits into the earlier bearing carrier, but there'd be a gap that would make the sprocket carrier 5mm to far outboard. Of course, anything is possible if you've got the skills and machinery--or the money. Might be easier to remove the four studs and replace them with five (can't remember if they have the same PCD).
Ciao,
There is an 8th gen rear wheel on flea bay right now for $369 and free shipping. Tempting, but I really don't feel the need to put it on any of my VFRs (my '01 and '00 have 3rd gen 8 spokers), or my Hawk (5-6th gen 5 spoke). Could be a really good deal for someone though, but you would still need to get the hub and all of the other parts that 3d did to get it to fit. Just a public service announcement

You could probably run a 190/55-17 on the correct sized rim.
I've been wondering this as well. For instance; if one had a ToroCharger 6th Gen and wanted more rubber on the ground with a 190 rear...
Surely there are a couple guys that live close enough to swap out wheels for a look?

Gotta be real careful, some 190s rub on the swing arm just forward of the wheel, that is to say the centre band of the Tyre, not the sides. This happened to me on a 6th gen.... and if you're running -1 teeth on the front sprocket, in order to get proper tension on the shorter chain, the eccentric will surely be wound up bringing the rear hub forward so much the tyre surely rubs.
But one can only try and take measurements.
not willing to buy a wheel to try, if some one local to me wants to stop in once I get my bike back together again I can surely do a test fit for the group.
or if the members of VFRD want you can get a fund raiser going and donate the $$ and I will buy one from ebay
1 hour ago, KevCarverHaha, I posted that on CB1KR forum. I'm sure I shared it here too, but it's hard to search this forum for some reason.
3dcycle, With your experience putting the 8th Gen parts on a 6G, would it be pretty simple to swap the opposite way? 5/6 Gen complete hub and wheel on 8th Gen swing arm?
yea I don't see any issues with that at all. I mean I did not have to shim anything. everything lines right up. the biggest concern I would have is the amount of thread left on the axle sticking out of the left side of hub, I think the 8 gen is a little thicker than the 6 gen but I pretty sure there would still be enough to secure nut with.
Is there a difference in brake rotor diameter, or was that a discussion on the front end? (I may have been skimming at some point...)
nope rear rotors are the same diameter, just a different bolt pattern. fronts are different.
