My baby is dying on me every 3 days or so. I hope you guys can help me out.
My battery is going flat from a new charge after about 3 days in the bike, and it is about 2 weeks old. On the third day the battery dies while trying to start the bike and then the clock resets to 1pm.
(for the curious alternator resistance should be 0.1-1 ohm across the three stator wires and my result was 0.6 across all. The resistance from each socket to earth was a reading of 1 or infinite.)
(R/R - at 4.5k RPM battery read 14.4v, with lights on battery fell to 14.1v ) So I think they are fine.
Battery passes all load tests when freshly charged but fails the High-load test (when cranking the engine over on the starter motor) on the third day.
This might be the problem though? I also checked the battery leakage rate was 1.57 mA which is considerably higher than 1.2mA that I think it should have been. Taking out the fuses I noticed that it fell to 1.02mA when I took out the 30A main fuse. It fell to 0.6mA when i removed only the 10A clock fuse. Removing all other fuses caused no change.
Does this mean that a problem with the clock circuit is draining the battery? And if so what any advise on what do I do next?
Thanks kg, could be a crap battery alright. I think I'll need a new battery anyway so maybe I could buy it now and test it. Unless it could get damaged by my faulty charging system?
Thank knute, I have that flow chart and according to it my charging system is OK. Which it could be, I think something is draining my battery when the bike is switched off
Just a quick update,
Brought the bike to a local mechanic and he also suggests a dodgy battery so I will bring the battery back to the shop I bought it in and try and get a refund. Fingers crossed . . .
Switchblade, its a sealed battery so can't remove any cells.
Fairly certain he was referring to the battery, not the cell.
It' real quick and easy to see if there's any drain (current leakage) when the bike's turned off...
Multimeter on Amps (miliamps: mA) and postive (red) probe to (disconnected) ground lead and negative (black) probe to the (disconnected) negative battery terminal. You want no more than 2.5 mA
