Havent Been Here A While. Any Fixes For The Touchy Throttle By Wire In First Yet?

I had a move last year so I didnt have much time to get her out last year. Just got her out, dusted off and lagging maintenance and registration done on Tue this week. Oh and a wash which she needed badly.

After the wash I took her out and she rides great. I think I have all the bugs worked out of this 2010 except the touchy throttle by wire in 1st still haunts me. Is there anything new that fixes this out yet? Currently I have a JuiceBox on her and the gearbox ECU wired in a 5-N-6-3-4-5-6 config instead of the 1-N-2-3-4-5-6 config which helps for power but not the touchy throttle by wire in 1st.

Might there be some relief with the ECU reflash I read about on here?

I do remember reading that some place out of the U.S. was working on a cable retrofit for this bike which would fix the problem. They are the same company that developed the only aftermarket cat-free exhaust header that I have seen for this bike so they were into 1200s pretty heavy. I might look them up if this leads to a dead end.

Any input would be helpful on this subject.

Thanks,

Rob

Never noticed any such problem. Was this a 2010 only problem? I've got a '12.

Rob,
I get a bit of this on my 2010 DCT at low speed maneuvering, but nothing really bothersome. I've adjusted the cable, like you probably have, and it made a small improvement, though the truth is I probably ended up where I started after several iterations. I have the Guhl ECU re flash with the PC -001 fuel map (stock air/exhaust) and it made no noticeable improvement, but then mine isn't really that bad. You have a Juicebox, so I assume you've fiddled with fuel mapping to no avail. You may have a bad throttle cable (doubt it) and/or a bad TPS. You might want to look at the TPS if your issue is pronounced.

The thing that made the biggest improvement for me is simple technique. I had to force myself to be very steady on the throttle, especially at low speeds, and occasionally using the rear brake to damp out any slight surging. If you have the F model, I can't see it being a big issue as it seems the clutch would provide the control needed to smooth out the surging.

There's no fix that I'm aware of -- Marsman is right, no real improvement from the re-flash (at least in that regard). I seem to recall some people having good results with the PCV...?

It shows up as a problem for me when holding "maintenance throttle" mid corner...it does the same on/off/on/off surge that the FZ-09 does. Not detrimental, but certainly unnerving when you're pushing it -- especially in a bumpy corner where it's hard to keep your hand steady.

That's the first I've heard of this being an issue at anything above slow city, rush hour, and parking lot speeds.

The lower in the rev range and the lower in the gears (2nd and 3rd mostly) the more pronounced it is. Maybe I'm just really sensitive to it.

OP has a F version and I can imagine the reflash will not fix the DCT problems... as it not suppose to.

You can change the ignition map, you can alter the way the butterflies works but still DCT will force the engine to do some stupid things.

But it does a really good job for a standard shift I believe.

I suggest to check for any error codes first.

My biggest complaint about my "new" (1,300km) 2010 VFR1200 (non DCT) is how jerky the fuelling is in 1st and 2nd...  I think people had said the ECU flash fixed it on the manual transmission bikes, dunno about DCT.

Thank you guys for all the replies and suggestions. I think I am going to do the throttle tamer and also the ECU reflash. Do you take your bike into a shop or just send in your ECU and just re-install yourself? And who do I go through?

I apologize for all the questions on the reflash but I have searched and cant find all the info for this on the forum. I am probably searching wrong.

And is the reflash compatible with my Two Brothers Juicebox which is exactly the same as a PCV but Two Brothers just bought the right to sell from Power Commander? Or should I just ditch the JB after the reflash since it doesnt help above the reflash?

How much free play have you got on the throttle, you'll be surprised how much difference it makes, I have mine set with next to nothing of free play. But for safety reasons if and when you do this, start the engine, and let her tick over, once you have reduced the free play in the throttle cables turn the steering from lock to lock, just to make sure the revs don't rise, if the revs rise then just slacken the throttle cable a touch, till you can turn the steering from lock to lock and the revs to remain at tick over.

Rob, I like the carbon fiber panels. Where did you get them?

Its a vinyl wrap I believe.

You already have a Juicebox, so I presume you made any fuel corrections you need there to try to eliminate fuel map related contributions to low speed surge. If that didn't work, then the ECU re flash won't make any difference either. I wouldn't spend money on the ECU re flash if you're trying to solve a fuel map issue and you already have such a tool installed on you bike. The ECU re flash was concocted by Don Guhl to eliminate certain restrictions Honda programmed into the ECU, e.g. 1st and 2nd and top speed. This is all well documented on this forum, but I can't seem to find it anymore to refer you to...sorry.

Not the original thread but may help.

Throttle tamer is on its way. I appreciate all the help. Hopefully this helps.

+1.  I adjusted mine to have just enough slack to account for cable flex as you described.

That's just it.  Don't lug the engine in low gear.  Other than crawling in traffic at snail pace, I keep the revs up in lower gears.

Throttlemeister helped but did not fully correct the problem. Messed around with it for another month and finally found the problem. I could kick myself it was so remedial. I had to soften the suspension. Particularly the front shock about 5 clicks.
