How To Jump 1 Vfr With Another?

Prep'ing for a multi state trip with a 2003 & 2002. Want to carry jumper cables just in case of a dead battery (it's happened before!). I'd like to make my own with the small alligator clips. What size gauge cable do I need?? 

Mine are BikeMaster brand cables. I think they're 8 or 10 gauge. The alligator clips are a little over 3" long.

It's not the size of the clips that is important, it's the gage of the metal they are made from. More contact area the better, thicker metal has a lower resistance, thus helping flow to the dead bike.

instead of jumper cables, pick yourself up one of these, then you can be self sufficient in case no ones around and it takes up less space, & you can run your cell phone, computer, etc. I have one of these they work great!

True.  If the battery is completely dead, push starting isn't going work.  If the battery has enough juice to run the fuel pump and ignition coils, push starting should work, but depending on why the battery is low you might not get very far. 

When my stator died the battery didn't have enough current to run the starter motor fast enough to start the bike, but I could push start it.  That got me 10 miles from home... :-(

Just find a big hill and put it in gear with the clutch out at the top. Hopefully by the time you get to the bottom of it there is enough juice to fire the injectors and pump. I had to do that with my GSXR one day when I left the parking light on. No way normal push starting would have got it going.

After it had been shipped from Los Angeles to Antwerp the battery on my ST1300 was weak, but it did start the engine.  Until I stopped at the first station to fill up the gas tank, when it didn't.  With not inconsiderable effort, however, I was able to push-start that bike on flat ground....but please don't ask me to do it again!
