Hello all. I recently purchased a VFR that is very near and dear to me. My dad bought the bike bran new the year I was born (1986). He owned it for 17 years or so durring which time I spent countless hours in his garage drooling over the bike. He then sold it to one of my uncles. Said uncle fitted an F4i swinger and rear wheel along with n F2 front wheel. He also repainted the bike. It had never been crashed but the side stand sunk in some hot pavement once and 17 years of riding had the paint a little beat. After a few years my uncle sold it to another uncle. He didnt ride it much and then sold it to my brother. My brother upgraded to an RC51 and sold the VFR to a friend. That friend recently bought a new bike and was ready to unload the VFR. For the first time in my life I had the money at the same time the bike was for sale so I jumped on it, not wanting to let the bike drift away from the family. Here she is.
trust me, its not going anywhere. I have some big plans for it in time. Repaint to the original peal white, usd forks and modern front brakes, maybe some forged wheels and a complete nuts and bolts resto. All surfaces polished, replaced, repainted or whatever. It'll be a while before I even start on it, but some day.....some day.
there are two aprilias in that bottom shot. My main daily ride next to the VFR is a 2012 RSV4 Factory. The one on the bench is a 2007 SXV550 with a blown motor that I'm slowly acquiring parts to rebuild.
I have the same Kerker slip-ons on my '83, I had the cans polished and I repacked them with furnace insulation (denser than fiberglass). Just about ready to get her back on the road, so I haven't heard them in awhile.
What's the reliability of the early VFR. I heard stores about pitted cam issues insufficient oiling, cam chin probes. I had a VFR500 back in the da and could never quiet the tappets.

1986 and above are great bikes.
the 2nd generation VFR is an all new design that is far superior to just about anything else made in terms of reliability.
this keeps true with the 3rd/4th gen and the 5th. :fing02:
the 6th gen had cam chains which are a PITA.. ditto for 8th :computer-noworky: and both have vtec
