Vf1000R Rear Comstar On Vf700/750/1000F - Alternative Method

Came up with a close to "bolt on" method for fitting a VF1000R rear wheel on a VF700/750/1000F utilizing the the stock rear caliper.

(The front wheel is a bolt on if you have 1000R rotors)

I noticed that the rear spacing for the stock 1000R rear rotor seemed the same as a 87-90 CBR600F Hurricane. Indeed, the three 600 holes line up with 3 of the 1000R mounts. That one happens to be a NSR250 rotor. You can also use some CBR250, VT250, and VFR400 rotors, depending on year. Check an EBC catalog for the exact years that match the Hurricane 600 part #. Pretty sure a stock Hurricane rotor will also cover the unused holes on the wheel. So in addition to the rotor, you'll need a 600 Hurricane rear caliper bracket. The axle hole is 17mm and you need a 20mm hole. I bought a stepped drill bit off of Amazon for about $7. Worked great in a drill press. Had to hone it out just a touch for the axle to slide thru easily.

This bracket puts the 600 rotor right down the middle of the slot.

I guess it should, I just wasn't sure on the 1000R wheel.

I used an 86 VFR750F brake arm for this mock up. It worked perfectly. I had to sleeve the front hole to match the bolt diameter for the front mount (happen to have the perfect sleeve the right diameter and width in a box of collars that I always save from shit), but it lined up very nicely mounting to the outside of the swingarm boss. I plan on taking a stock 750/1000F brake arm and putting an "S" bend in it to get it to line up and see how that works as well. Will probably go that route so I don't have to buy another VFR arm.

I still have to finalize the size of the last spacer on the right. I just need to measure the width of the stock 1000R caliper bracket and subtract the width of the 600 bracket. The one I have installed is very close, probably just 1 or 2mm narrow. So that is really the only "real" machining needed for the conversion, that last right spacer. I was really hoping I just happen to have a spacer from another bike the right width to pass along, but I don't think so. I will post the final size. Anybody have a stock 1000R caliper bracket handy to measure the width? I think I have an extra in a box somewhere and I really don't feel like pulling a wheel off of one my other ones right now.

Very interesting. I'm looking at doing the same thing. I also have a 1000R front end I'd like to use, but having trouble getting the triples machined. Seems there might not be enough meat on the lower 750 unit. Thanks for posting this.
