The local BMW dealer has a 2015 S1000RR for demo and yesterday was a perfect day to take it out. As i was about to leave, i asked what time of time frame i had, he said about an hour? Perfect my favorite local roads and an hour and a half later. I had been hesitant to ride one as i thought this would be the one bike that would make me long for a new bike, suspension, breaks, power, traction control, auto blip, etc... Ive ridden an 2008 R1 with 164hp, but this was a whole different animal. It was so powerful, at all RPM's from 4,000-16,000 and i don't know how you could half of it without the traction control, i tried many times in dry a straight line, traction control kicking in. Amazing bike, but could not be an every day ridder for me. In traffic running 220 degrees, and i felt between my legs more then the VFR surprisingly, Very buzzy on HWY at interstate speeds rt foot peg and grip more than a VFR surprisingly, legs position a bit cramped but for me at 5'10 not bad, bike had HELI bars which made them level with the triples which and helped a lot. In the twisties, turn in and transition were so quick and easy, suspension amazing because i didn't ever think about it, and the brakes; the brakes were the one thing that made getting back on the VFR feel totaling inadequate. I was happy getting back onto my 99 vfr knowing i was not going home thinking it may be time for a new bike with all the bells and whistles, maybe just a delilnk.

I had quite the opposite reaction when I test rode the S1000RR, when it first came out.
It was all I could do NOT to raid my bank account and run back to the dealer, cash in hand, like some drunken sailor stepping out of the sub pens in San Diego.
Of course, later, I was glad I didn't, given the problems plaguing the early bikes. But stunning performers.

One of my regular riding buddies just paid $24k for the first to reach Nashville. :unsure:
He loves it, has had many bikes and many miles. Funny though, I ran into him today and we road a bit, but he was on the K1300S BMW instead. I never asked why.
Said he has 10k miles on the S1000rr and is on his sixth rear tire.
It would be interesting to also ride the R and XR's back to back to see how they compare in both comfort as well as handling. Not the insane level of power - but maybe more usable for everyday riding.
There an animal, but with the rider aids you can dial them back to suit your needs. But for me & getting on in years the rider position is to extreme for long rides which is about all the riding I do. It's the one thing sportsbikes don't have which is comfort which us older people require, if my body would let me ride a S1000RR, R1M or ZX10R for full days on trips without needing a chiropractor one of those would be in my garage already.
I ride the S1000RR every year (the newest model, no less) at the Superbike school at VIR. Totally absurd bikes and fantastic on the track where a full race bike is at home. Useless on a street if you want to keep your license and come home in one piece. I don't need any help breaking the speed limit. Some genius named Kimball said something about chasing high horsepower and speed on the street only ends one way. I wasn't paying too much attention because he rambles on and on, something about guys dying and too old for this crap. I ride a giant ST1300 old man bike because its too cold and something or other. He made a lot of sense until I was like braaaaaaap on my 500X. Pure joy... I plan to attend VIR in May in case anyone wants to play.

Well you know it wasn't me. :goofy: I have a friend here in town with one and he has clocked 199.? mph at Bonneville on one stock. Just barely missed the 200mph club. I just left the local BMW dealer (there is one in town now) and they have two of them for only 19K and a few more bucks. Prolly not enough bike to outrun you though Kev. :cool:
