The Dreaded Charging Issue

From what I've read so far about the right voltage readings at idle and 5k rpms, I checked mine and my readings are much different. At idle, I have exactly 14.0 volts and at 5k it reads 12.75. I went ahead and wired up a harbor freight volt meter to the battery and went for a ride and I got the same readings. In fact, anything from 3k and beyond reads at 12.75. Is it me or is that Ass backwards? I grew suspicious when I noticed the headlight seemed brighter at idle then when riding. Also, is wiring up the r/r directly to the battery as simple as 2 reds hot 2 greens negative? I just read something about that and was wondering if someone could elaborate... Thanks

Those issues are addressed with suggested fixes in pinned as well as many other threads in the electrical forum here:

Also be sure to inspect the wires on the plug to the starter solenoid. Any signs of melting or burning there may interfere with charging. You need to remove the plug and check the bottom.

Yes, pulled the solenoid plug and wouldn't ya know... One of the wires had signs of burning, although not that bad, I'm guessing it can't be good either. Thanks squirrel man. As far as replacing the plug, that must be a Honda specific solenoid plug?

You can get the replacement on ebay for ~$10, and there are a few threads on here with specifics

if that's the part you are talking about
