Rode a stock 2010, Zbombed 2010 and now a stock 2012. This 2012 had brand new PR4's but taking it through a couple of cloverleaf freeway ramps I was astonished and thrilled that such a heavy bike could turn so well.  Felt like a bike I would want to ride all the time.

I'm pretty much sold EXCEPT, like the stock 2010 I rode, the fuel is very bad shame on you Honda.  Nothing happens until the tach sweeps past 3500 and the power comes rushing on so here is my question.

Is there anything that will fix the problem and provide a smoother fuel delivery that won't hurt the mileage?  And if not, how much of a mileage loss are we talking about?

Z-Bomb - ~ $50 - But 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will all show as 3rd on your gear indicator.............

Don Guhl Reflash ~ $350-$375  If I remember correctly - Gear indicator works as promised, fan temp can be lowered, top speed limiter can be removed, red line can be increased - he can also map for a pipe. The stock mapping is no doubt for emissions compliance as there is no California model - it is a 50 state bike.

The re-flash gave me way better fueling, and I have so much fun, that I have NEVER checked my mileage - I ride for fun, not commuting so I am not concerned with mileage. The 1200 is no better or worse than any other 1200+cc modern sport bike, but it does take more fuel to make 175 horsepower than it does to make 100.........all other things being equal.........

Better fueling may cost you a few percent more gas per mile, but is safer for the engine and makes your riding more enjoyable, which is priceless!

Don't forget to get the drive shaft updated as that causes low speed clunkiness..............

both my 2010 and 2012 have been reflashed.....no change in MPG

My MPG actually got better with the reflash. DCT model fwiw.

Don told me if anything the mpg should get better with a flash which agrees with your findings.

Swimmer must ride like Old Man Finkle, 50 mpg, and 16k out of a set of tires.  I can barely get 40 mpg!    I

It would be interesting to see how you think it compares to the XX.

I'm surprised that a 12 model has fuelling issues as bad as you describe. Is it the updated 12 model or a an old model 12?

A good end can does make a small difference to fuelling imho but I don't know how it affects gas mileage. I do know that on the same journey, taking the same time, my 1200 uses less fuel than my 08 800.

My work buddy gets 115m (average) to a full tank.  He says at 130m it is on fumes...

#10

@Skids - I didn't know there were updates but I could find out.

@ Suzuki416 - 115miles to a tank? That's horrible, it's 177 miles from Ely to Tonopah NV.  Is that a 2010 you speak of and what kind of riding? Supposedly the 2012's get better mileage and I've heard of multiple guys getting into the 40's

@ Everyone-  If I can't get less that 40 on tour doing 72mph It's going to be a tough sell.  My ZX14R got 48 which is way above normal so I'm going to hope I'll be on the high side for the VFR too

@Cogswell - Being that the VFR was completely stock and my XX had just about everything I could throw at it suspension-wise, the VFR1200 still turns better, feels lighter and take the bumps better. That's pretty impressive.  Engine-wise there no contest, XX is far smoother, faster, flexible, and accessible.   However, something about the VFR was more enjoyable and made me want to keep riding it which is all that really matters, right?  With a flash I doubt I could ask for more. I bet the V12 would be right there with the XX

To put this into context,

I once got 90m to a tank (17.5L) on a CBR600rr7 (fumes left) commuting in london..

I was also driving like a nut - lol

But it still sucks...

At a steady speed around the limit, you'll get over 50mpg (allowing for small differences between US & UK gallons).

My 50-mile blat to work returns ~48mpg (UK) at a gentlemanly cruise speed.

IIRC that gives me about 185 miles to empty.

I got around 42 mpg riding from SF to SD at a good speed, so around 150 miles before the fuel light flashed.  That is the same as my 5th gen.  The light flashes with just under 1.5 gallons left, so another 20 miles would have been very safe.  I could see 50 mpg if you were cruising along at 60-65.  My plan it to carry a liter of fuel when touring JIK.  Mileage is not great around town for me.  You should be able to easily do 177.  CA gas is terrible and ruins mileage too.  Keep that in mind.  My bike has the Guhl flash and a DAM muffler.

I don't think the mileage is the problem as much as the 5 gallon tank, but most other sport touring bike are no better.  I think the Multistrada and Ninja 1000 have about the same range.

OK I can live with that.

Here's the VIN, how do I see if the recalls have been done?

You can do it on the Honda website.

Propeller shaft hasn't been done. So that helps alot?

I had the recall done on Tuesday.  The new shaft is a big improvement.  Nearly all, maybe even all, of the clunckiness at low speeds is gone.

#18

to see if the recall has been done look at the VIN plate on the steering head.....there will be a round punch mark under the first digit of the number if it has been completed

After seeing how people are impressed with the results I would really love to ride one of these with the recall done and flashed.

Probably be getting one fairly soon, won't be able to enjoy riding until I do :comp13:   I'm surprised to see no new 2013's at dealers on Cycle Trader. There were dozens this time last year.

Can you explain the benefit of the reflash on the DCT. I am considering to get mine done but I am unclear on the benefits on a DCT.

The reflash or Bazazz will get rid of the flat spots in the first 2 gears. I do not believe it matters if it is DCT or manual for this. I believe the consensus is that Honda had to design the motor this way to pass emission testing or something of the sort. I can tell you that I purchased my 2010 with a Bazazz FI/TC control module and the $40 Bazazz Z-Bomb made a huge difference although I don't think you can Z bomb the DCT version so a reflash might be the only way to get rid of the restrictions. Even if the DCT doesn't have the restrictions in 1st & 2nd gears you can also have the top speed restriction lifted and have it mapped for exhaust etc.

I had the Guhl reflash done on my 2010 DCT and it solved uneven fueling in lower gears. The bike before the reflash was noticeably jerkier on take off through 1st and 2nd than our 2012 DCT which according to the guy we have service the bikes was not as smooth as the 2014 he also services. He felt with each of the model years Honda must have made subtle improvements. He also felt our 2012 was still smoother even after the flash compared to the 2010, but only slightly. I can't tell the difference between the two. Will be on the bikes this weekend for the first time with the new replacement shafts so it will be interesting to see if they feel any different after the recall. We put new Angel GT's on the 2010 which is what we have done the last two sets but moved the 2012 over to PR4's so we'll see if that makes a difference as well.

i've put about 900 miles on since the recall.....the shaft is 100% dead quiet now......a big improvement

#25

I'm a little confused. Will a 2012 benefit from a flash as much as a 2010?

I think it depends upon what you have done. Any fuelling issues and restrictions (1st & 2nd gear) can be sorted though it does appear there is anecdotal evidence that the later the model year, the better the stock fuelling - I'm sure folk here are sick of me relaying how smooth my 14 model is without a re-flash.

There are other things that can be addressed by the flash if you choose, including lowering the temp at which the cooling fan turns on and raising the rev limiter. There may be others too.

#27

i've owned a 2010 and a 2012, USA models..(both are reflashed)...i think that the EFI was better sorted on the stock 2012, though still very lean thanks to our beloved EPA, but there were drastic restrictions in 1st and 2nd on both....the reflash made a huge difference on both
