Engine noise RC46

Hi all!

I’ve found a few threads with similar title but I get an impression that the noise in my case is bit different. Anyone have an idea what could be the problem?

Sounds like the good old CCT (Cam Chain Tensioner) failure, and at 60,000kms that's about when they play up. Just need to establish whether it's the front or rear CCT, listen closely around the cylinder head area.

Well, actually it’s still noisy :(

This is how it sounds now with the clutch lever being pulled (no noise) and released (knocking).

This is quite common. In the video your engine appears to be idling slow and a little rough, this makes the situation worse, may just be the clutch plates rattling in the cage.

Does is go away with a warm engine and higher RPM's?

Is your Oil level correct and of the correct viscosity?

Does the bike ride ok when shifting gears?

Is your warm idle speed set to 1200rpm?

What may improve this a lot is Starter Valve Synch which will hopefully smooth out your idling. Otherwise apart from the noise it may be nothing to worry about.

I’ll check all things you’ve pointed out as soon as I’ll put my bike together ;)
I did not change the oil yet (since last Autumn) since I was not sure if I’ll have o drain the oil to check the clutch or replace timing chains.... I’ll do it and go for the test ride.

- shifting is bit hard but it works, the clutch seems to

- Hard to say with accessory exhaust 😉 But it goes away and comes back randomly. It's pretty 'hard', metal knocking so based on suggestion from a mate on Polish VFR forum I decided to inspect the clutch...

Can you spot any issues? 🙂

This is what I've noticed:

- 1.mov & 4.mov - the sprocket wobbles when I spin the clutch inner

- 3.mov & 8.mov - the oil pump chain is veeery loose

- 12.mov - the basket wear marks

- A.jpg - the springs free length too short according to manual

Hi Kochan.

A great lot of videos. I hope that some of the other members with a lot of Clutch experience can help you here, as I have never pulled a VFR clutch apart!

But the things that concern me are:

The wobble of the clutch Outer as you spin the inner. Could this mean a slightly bent Main Shaft.? (1.mov).

Not sure wether your oil pump drive chain is too loose, it might be ok. (3.mov).

Have no idea how the score marks have appeared on the clutch Outer (12.mov).

Regarding the outer basket wobble, I hope it’s not the Main Shaft... I think I’ll start with replacing the bearings and the clutch guide. I hope it’ll solve the problem.

Maybe somebody else have other ideas/opinions?

I would appreciate your help guys...

I’ve replaced the bearing and the tube and the basket is still wobbling. The only thing that comes to my mind is the spacer or the bent main shaft [image: emoji3064.png]... anyone has any suggestions?

Inner and otter baskets are cast aluminum and may not run true even when new...  Honda considers it

normal and thats why I machine my own billet basket on my  500 Belt-o-Ceptor... I may machine a billet

basket on Mr.RC45 because it wobbles like yours...

Problem develops over time and its normal for the clutch knock at idle... over time
means slop develops allowing the gear teeth to knock about and thus the
noise... grab the clutch lever and the inner basket helps align the
outer basket and the noise deadens... the only cure is to eliminate
the slop with new clutch parts... namely replace the clutch guide p/n
22116-MB0-000 and clutch bearing 91024-MB0-003

Another cure is aftermarket exhaust and ear plugs which effectively
curbs the amount of clutch noise from invading your space...

I’m putting everything together now. I have a quick question regarding the pressure plate position. There are marking on the pressure plate but I can’t find anything to align it with not I can find anything about it in the manual. Is the position of the pressure plate important?

Hi guys,

Just want to update you with the current status. I put everything together replacing:
- clutch basket guide
- clutch basket bearing
- pressure plate bearing
- oil pump sprocket chain
- friction plates
- clutch cover gasket

The noise is gone! The annoying metal knocking is completely gone. The only thing I can hear is noisy cam chains (tensioner already replaced) but this is something for another thread ;)
