Alright, I've been searching for frame sliders for my '02 for over a year now and I found a site af1racing.com selling a "MV" brand set for $59.99. 2 questions.

1. Does anyone know about these sliders (quality, etc?)

2. Has anyone mounted these, if so how difficult was it. I emailed this site and they tell me i will have to drill into the coolant tank. That sound scarry.

Hey steveefer, I've looked into sliders also, not as many choices as I'd like. The ones you've found are I believe to be the best possible (at least as far as where and how they mount). Others I've seen (and heard about) wont have the support needed - they mount in kindof "flimsy" ways.

I've seen pictures of drilled out water bottles, doesn't look like too big a deal, mark it correctly, have the right size drill, then I think some pvc or some kindof plastic tube can be glued in and no prob. Cutting the fairings correctly looks more difficult to me, the exact spot is crucial and I wouldn't know what to use so that it looked 'professional'.

So the bottom line for me is, because even these are questionable as far as how much they would help (I say that because of how long they have to be) kinda leaning towards doing without. Maybe others who have had some real experience here can help  us out.

R&g pricey but real strong comes with coolant tank.

hey, just intalled the motovation sliders, and they are well made, stong, and mount to the main engine mounts. yes, you gotta drill the bottle, but i used a hole saw, and glue gunned a piece of tube into place. let's hope it's stong enough! as for the fairing, used grease on the end of the bolt, intalled it far enough to hit the fairing when intalled, removed and drilled the fairing. little bit of pucker factor, but it all worked out well. i found if you drill inwards(paintside first), you won't get the burrs coming out onto the finished side. but then you need a steady hand to keep the saw from 'skating'. although my holesaw has a centering drill, it wants to 'angle' because the surface of the fairing is not flat.
btw, those protectors that mount onto the aft fairing screw are crap. if you have removed you fairing, you will see the little metal bracket they are intalled on. when that bracket bends with the wieght of the bike on the protector, the puck will punch straight through the fairing, defeating the purpose.
yeah, vfr sliders are not common, and i found the price of the mv sliders reasonable. i remember seeing a post and pics on the bottle mod... maybe got lost. anyway, good luck!

btw 03silver, my roomate got nailed by a cager last spring, and destroyed his exhuast, bent swingarm, bent frame, broken rearset/brake master, broken mirror, scratched tail section, and scratched lower.  i dumped my bike in parking lot and did waaaayy more platic damage than he did to his bike.  therefore i now have sliders :rocks:

Just curious, is there anyway to relocate the coolant recovery bottle, instead of drilling through it? There might be room behind the right front turn signal where the bodywork has a sort of pontoon shape bulge towards the front. Unless these something in there already, taking up most of the room, like the top half of the right radiator......Just a thought.

As Lastchance stated, the RGs are a bit pricy, but they do come with a modified coolant jug. Unfortunately, I had the opportunity to try the sliders out last September. :smash: I was pleased with the outcome, however. Fairing damage was minimal, although I bent the mounting bar. RG was great with replacement parts and I also picked up a set of their bar-end sliders. I consider these to be more bling than protective, as they don't stick out any further than the stock bar-end weights.

When I drilled my fairing I used a new hole saw and a drill press. There is no way to drill safely from the outside in, IMHO. I just went slow and steady and had very minor exterior burring, which cleaned up nicely with a file.

I bought a set of the Motovation sliders from af1 and found the guys very helpful & had absolutely great service from them & had them delivered to me in Australia within a week.

The build quality is excellent, & yes they are very long sliders to extend the required distance to make them effective. However, as I received them just before I went on holidays I haven't had time to fit them yet.

Here is the link to how to drill the water bottle & mark the fairing. It is for Moko sliders but the idea is the same. Drilling the water bottle

drilling water bottle ...eeeeek!    me, id go for the pre made bottle anyday from rg.....even if you could just use their bottle and the other company's sliders

dirtbag, wow I sure hope your roommate survived that crash ok. Actually I'm thinking of getting these (mv) sliders myself. My 02 fell over (pls don't ask me how it's too embarassing) and also got quite a bit of damage.
I just wish they were easier to install, it looks like these will certainly be worth the effort, at least I hope so biggrin.gif

Anyone know if there are frame sliders for a 95?  Any posts i've seen are for 2000+?

Any ideas appreciated!

Anyone ever fit the Motovations to a 1998 VFR?
#12
wheel.gif Thanks for all the advice fellas. I ordered the Motovation sliders from AF1racing.com today (they shipped today too biggrin.gif ). I did some reading on the install of MOKO's from R&G racing from one of the links on this site and the guy who put them on ended up drilling the coolent tank anyway. I'll probably be doing the install here soon and will try to post pics, etc. For the guys asking about installs on 4th / 5th gen bikes check out http://www.rg-racing.com. If the price scares you (especially with current US dollar vs. British pound / euro - seeing as how rg is in England) try emailing AF1 on their site.

Steveefer,
I ordered them today also, surprising they said they shipped today but the website said they were out of stock and have to wait 10days? Well it's not like I'm dyin to go out in the cold and install em right away anywho smile.gif
Glad you started this thread, the only 2 mods I really wanted, hugger and sliders, look like I'm gonna finally get done. Looking forward to hearing how yers go, then I'll just not make the same mistake smile.gif lol - keep us posted.

yep the roomie got away with minor bruises to body and ego, thankfully.  as for embarrassing tip overs, the great thing about this site is someone else has always done it too, and it help make you(me) not feel as stupid!
like they say... you've either dumped her, or you will.

good luck with the sliders install... been riding the last 2 days, and no coolant bottle probs... yet!  although it's too damn cold! :shake:

Here's the technique I used to mark the location of the hole in the fairing for my RGs. I'm sure that it would work as well for any style slider that uses the engine thru-bolt.

Pick up a pack of dowel centering jigs at Home Depot. Cut a piece of 3/4 board 1"x1" and then drill a small pilot hole through it. Select a bit that's slightly smaller than the engine mount bolt and countersink an enlarged hole about 3/8" deep along the pilot hole. Select a bit that's slightly smaller than the dowel centering jig and countersink a hole about 1/4" on the opposite side.

Mount the jig in its hole on the block and then twist the block onto the engine bolt. Use this as a center punch to mark the inside of your fairing. This is critical as the area you will be drilling is very angular.

Once marked, drill a small pilot hole through the fairing. Reinstall the fairing and make sure that the pilot hole is in alignment with the engine bolt. Use a sharp, new hole saw and slowly drill the hole from the inside out. I found it helpful to use a drill press. Clean up any burrs with the simple pass of a file.

Save the beer until you're done as a reward for doing a great job. Be careful and take your time. Remember, measure twice cut once!

Barry, thanks for that. I'm not real sure I followed exactly what u did to make everything, maybe when I see the stuff at home depot it will make sense. BUT, I did get the drill a pilot hole first and then reinstall the fairing to be sure it's lined up, not so sure I would have thought of that. Appreciate it very much. Hank

AF1 actually did have these in stock and were shipped yesterday. How often does that happen? they say they're out but actually have them and ship them the same day? I'll tell ya that's a good omen if ever there was one smile.gif I'm excited.

Being that a picture is worth 1,000 words, here's the little gizmo I made. This turns the engine mounting bolt into a center punch.

The problem with marking the VTEC fairing is that the bar contacts it at a point where it is extremely angular. Coating the end of the bar with paint or grease didn't work well in terms of really making sure the hole was going to be perfectly aligned. That's where the home made center punch comes in handy!

Sorry. I'm not to adept at attaching photos on this site. Bear with me and I'll try again! :smash:

Anyone got any pics yet of the MV sliders mounted????

I discovered that the R&G and MV sliders do not use the same engine bolt for mounting. R&G use the forward most of the two in that area and the MV's use what the shop manual refers to as the middle engine mount.
So, the R&G modified water bottle doesn't look like it would work with the MV sliders as the mounting points are a few inches apart.

I ordered and have the R&G's but am thinking but am thinking that I may prefer the MV's in terms of the mounting point and a couple of other reasons....hence my question concerning any pics that anyone might have of the installed MV's.

Hey I have the mv's but not installed yet, glad to see yer post cuz I don't know where you saw which frame bolts it's suppose to use, didn't get any instructions at all, where did you find your info? thnx!

I sent an email to RF1 racing asking if the MV's used a single "through the frame" mounting bolt like the R&G's use and they replied that no the MV's use separate bolts for each side. Got me to thinking and I looked at the shop manual and noticed the other engine mount position to the rear of the one R&G uses. Then I looked a the R&G modified coolant bottle and the one thread on modifying the coolant bottel for the MV's and saw that the hole for the frame sliders is in a more reward postion on the coolant bottle.......i.e the more rearward mounting point.

MichaelR:
A few reasons(not necessarily great reasons, but) that I'm thinking about either selling the R&G's or returning them and going with the MV's.

1) Looks like you'd have to remove the R&G's to pull the fairing off
2) It looks like the drilling location for the MV's might be a little easier to drill
3) Not all that keen on the "look" of the R&G's with the way they mount

Glad you pointed this out. In my Honda manual, pgs 6-7 and 7-10, show pretty much exactly what you say. The water bottle pics (drilled) that I've seen have all used the middel flange bolt. Using the front one, I'd have to think (as best as you can guess from the pics) might be pretty awkward, it's hard to be sure.
I have the MV's and they definately have 2 seperate bolts.

Not having installed sliders on a vfr before, not sure on this, but another thing to consider is that if you use the front hanger bolt, the place on the outside of the fairing that has to be drilled may also be a much tougher place to get a perfectly centered hole. I didn't know anyone made any that installed in that bolt. Thnx again, Hank

Hank,
yeah it does appear to be a bit more complicated drilling wise where the R&G sliders go....guys have done it(Last Chance, etc.), but that was one of my concerns.

When are you going to install yours??? I will be very interested to hear your coolant bottle technique as well as drilling techniques....please keep me posted cool.gif

Thanks,
Craig

Anyone have pics yet? I'd love to see what some of these bad boys look like when they're actually mounted.

Thanks,

Brian

Hey Craig, I hope to get them installed probably in March, I made some mods to mine you can see in another forum called "looking for frame sliders" (just do a search on 'frame' if u haven't seen that thread). I'll take some pics along the way. Hank

Hank,
I saw what you did with the sliders in the other post looking forward to seeing how they work(you should install them this weekend laugh.gif )

Another technique that is used is to slip one of the computer desk wiring grommets in the hole which covers the edge up and gives a clean look.

I'd come over and help you with the install but it would take a while to get there.

Yes you have to remove R&G to pull fairings,But man are they strong mounted.
