What is Jelly in America?

Bit of a trivial question here for our American contributors, but I often here in movies or read in books people ordering a breakfast in America of say bacon, eggs, hash brown and Jelly? What is jelly in this context? Is there one type or several. 

Here in Australia jelly is a sweet you eat with ice cream. Puzzled 😕 

Jelly and jam, you put on toasted bread and butter...... Apple, strawberry, grape, blueberry...ect .....

The jelly you're talking about is Jello to Americans. When Americans say jelly they're referring to jam.

Not to my taste, but superior to cooked tomato...for brekkie!  😄

Jelly is slightly different from jam. Doesn’t have as much fruit and more fruit juice and gelatin. Kind of in between jam and jello. Unfortunately in U.S., both are made with high amounts of HFCS. The smaller brands tends to be better in not using the stuff.

Mrs Skids makes her own jam. Beautiful on toast.  Never been a big fan of jelly, looks too much like a special effect monster puke on Dr Who.

Thanks everyone for clearing that up. I had heard it was like jam but couldn’t imagine putting it on bacon and eggs. It’s all down to what you grow up with I guess. I will have to give it a try.

Sorry to disagree St Stephen but I like nothing better than lots of fried (red) tomatoes with my bacon and eggs, heaven!

Here we put hot sauce on our eggs.  Jelly can go on the toast if you like.

I like ketchup on my eggs. Hot sauce is bit much.....

it’s similar in thickness and consistency to Baxter’s mint jelly used on meats. Although Coleman’s Mint Sauce is closer to jam since it’s chunkier. Here’s how to make homemade jelly.

Although I certainly don’t like it on my bacon or eggs. It belongs on toast only! Or biscuits, or croissants.

My wife’s British so we have Marmite for toast of course!

I prefer Laura Scudded’s Natural Peanut Butter, just ground-up peanuts and some salt. No harmful additives like HFCS or hydrogenated oils.

I work with a lot of Aussies and Kiwis on the ships I'm on, I'm no stranger to this song as it was a bit of a hit.

Being the only American onboard many of the vessels I've been on I got used to taking a Smoko instead of a break.

Take it from a New Englander - it is pure maple syrup or nothing.

Unless we are talking about peanut butter, banana, and honey.... then the alternative sweetener is not only allowed but encouraged. Add bacon and nutella to this and put it in a wrap and you've got a perfect ski day lunch to eat on the lift.

I like maple syrup but it’s too runny. Golden has a thick, oozy consistency and depth of flavour that’s hard to match. 
 

Love a bit of banana with this. Also helps keep the peanut butter from sticking to the roof of your mouth. 
 

Bacon and Nutella is a combo I’ve got to try. Having said that, half a tub of Nutella has been known to disappear in one sitting at my house.

Different times! I remember doing a tour of Greek islands and in the most remote/mountainous passes there was always a table stacked high with wild blossom honey. Best honey I’ve EVER had and it was so CHEAP! 
 

There was invariably an old lady wilting in the heat under a parasol...

In central Africa peanut oil is used for cooking so at meal times the place smelled like peanut butter all over. It gives the food such a rich flavour. 
 

Also, in Africa chickens are sometimes fed peanuts and other nuts. So Danno’s chicken would have peanuts on the inside AND the outside AND would have been fried in peanut oil!
