VFR Discussion Group -> Mounting a RAM mount

I've been checking out eBay for the last month, to get the price points of a GPS V (I'm a Cheap Bastard™) and I know I'll get a RAM mount in time. At the bottom end, where do I attach it to my soon-to-be-mine 6th gen?

If the mounting points for the front of the fuel tank are the same as they are on a 5th gen, you could use the "top" half of a handlebar RAM mount. On the 5th gen the bolt spacing is the same, so I got two longer bolts and mounted it where the front of the fuel tank bolts to the frame. This places the mount directly front and center. I don't have a GPS mounted there but I do have a Chatterbox unit there. Vary the length of the RAM mount arm you use to position the GPS vertically.

Tank isn't on the bike, but this is directly behind the steering head. Bolts are longer than stock by 1.5 - 2mm I believe

Unfortunately I dropped the camera while taking these shots so I could no longer get a clear picture of the resevoir mount I also use on left bar. :(
It bolts to the front of the clutch resevoir, again using longer bolts. Hope this helps.

Well, that's damn near brilliant. I went ahead and bought the expansion plug and the off set mounting ball to use the steering stem. Plug fits into the steering stem adn when tightened, expands to lock into place. Works great but, of course, I had to buy more stuff.

After seeing how "clean" the Ram looks I would have to go with it. Didn't seem to be too expensive either.

RAM mounts work great, and are very simple. Lots of flexability in the mounting options, as well. Hispanic Slammer used one to mount his camera to his mirror stalk.
Of course I use a smaller ETrex gps, so maybe the bigger units need a bigger mounting system.

Does anyone know what RAM mount model fits the spacing for an '04? I think the gas tank bolt spacing is about 1 5/8" OC.

I just returned the mount for the 2610 because it was too wide (about 1 7/8" OC), and I was wondering if anyone knew if the tank bolt measurements had changed for model year. I'm thinking that's unlikely, but I thought I'd ask. Better bet is that Garmin's 2610 diamond mount plate had wider bolt holes.

Just ordered my Ram mounts. One for my MP3 and One for my Garmin 176. I figure I'll mount the tank ball and on daily rides to work use my MP3 for the GPS I'll try to mount it to the left handlebar, but it doesn't look like much room there. :joystick:

I just ordered a Street Piolt 3 RAM mount from Cyclegadgets. It slips into the stem tube, just take off the plastic cap and put it in. Should be here in a couple days. Easier than unbolting the gas tank but a bit more expensive. Sam
