I went down one tooth on the front sprocket. Kept it that way for one summer.
Gearing was 6% lower than stock. Stoplight launches were effortless and wheelies were certainly easier than the stock gearing.
However, the bike was way too busy on the highway for my liking with the lower gearing. I returned to stock after that one year and never went back.
As a matter of fact, I gave away the sprocket to a buddy with a VFR who occasionally ventures out to the dragstrip with it. Thought it was an easy way for him to lower his E.T.'s
I also went down one tooth up front. It really changes the character of the bike during accelleration. A definite and noticeable improvement. I didn't notice the change much on the highway, other than less of need to downshift when you want to pass quickly, but I do very little freeway-droning.
If you just re-gear and don't re-calibrate, your speedo will read around 11%-12% high and your odometer will accrue 6% or 7% more miles than the bike actually is traveling in real life. The already optimistic speedo could be construed as annoyingly optimistic after a re-gear such as this, not to mention the slightly accellerated depreciation.
I installed a Yellow Box speedo re-calibrator at the same time as I switched the front sprocket to compensate for both the sprocket and stock speedo error.
It probably does have a slight effect on mileage. However, on my bike the appearance of this effect is probably magnified by the fact that, even though my MPH is now dead-on, my odomoeter mileage now reads low by the original amount of speedo error.
The annoying thing about this speed/mileage thing (IMHO) is that you can have either/or but not both. Since the two are (for some inexplicable reason) computed completely separately by the ECM and the speedo error comes stock at around 6%-7% high only one of them can be right at a time.
