Typically for me the recent K&N bashing threads, I've noticed on various forums, started just after I ordered mine. Lots of interesting info, however I don't think I saw any actual reports from individuals who had damage as a result from using them.
I have a friend who has over a 110,000 miles on his 98 Superhawk and I know he has a K&N on the bike, so I emailed him the following:

He responded today:
Close to 100.K miles now on the K&N.
I put in the dishwasher when Judy's not home to clean it and spray it with K&N filter oil about every 20.K.
If I had it to do again though, I'd modify the filter platform to take a paper automotive filter.
Because I think they filter more dirt out than K&N.
k&n has been around for a pllllenty long time. no product liability suit has put them out of business. plus buddy "feels" the modified filter would filter better? please....give me scientific study! not a dishwasher tech's belief! :sleep:

Did you read my post, the point I was making was that if my friend can get 100,000 miles plus and is still going strong, then that says a lot for the K&N, plus he could have modified the filter if he wanted to, but chose not to.
I wanted to post a positive testimonial for the K&N, and would like to see,if anyone can, post an 'actual' negative response not some info they've read elsewhere. We are on the same side my friend - quit the freindly fire ;)

sorry. i took the post as a negative due to the fact you stated "don't be hatin" and the fact your buddy said he would do it differently next time....double negatives! but in this case i guess they do equal a positive :)

This is debatable. A friend of a friend (now this is hard scientific evidence, can't you tell :rolleyes: ) dragraces his Bandit semi professionally (in the US at the moment). And to say the least he has his engine theory and practice down. He says that stock filters are not the limiting factor for bike engines if they are not turbo charged or are big bore+ported+reshaped cams. Also K&N flows worse than some OEM filters. I use a K&N for the reusability but have no illusions of increased power.

Agreed, filters don't make much diff, it's a cost/cleaning/reuse issue for me and color of course. Realize you can over or improperly clean them causing more dirt to get into engine. A dirty AF cleans better than a new one, traps more dirt but then flows less air, what a delimnia. Centrifugal is the only other way to go but bulky and costly. Plus the rotation may upset the balance of the bike :joystick:

More pros and cons with K&N filters. They actually filter better when they get slightly dirty. They will not stop water from coming in unlike an oiled foam filter, really more of an issue with off road machinery. I have never had one wear out, 3 cars 4 motorcycles 25 years of use. They are not maintenance free but the fact that you won't have to replace them is the real selling point.
I just installed one and thankfully I checked for loose crap that could fall into the carbs. I found a bunch of little plastic chunks so I brought it out in the sunlight to look at it a little more carefully. I found 4 or 5 little pieces of wire stuck in the filter element, some came out easy, others took a needle nose to pull out. I probably removed about 20 little bits of debris, all on the carb side! Who knows what those chunks of wire would do if ingested.
It may be obvious but,.....clean it before installing! I was pretty surprised at all the crap I found.

That's total BS dude, I would raise hell with them and maybe you'll get some free cleaner and oil. Have not seen this and have had K&N in 2 Camaros x2 each, STS, 454 Truck, ST, VFR(KN & RED BMC), Magna, CBR (BMC), that's total BS Bro! And a good catch at that, you da man.

Yep,...K&N for a 4th gen. I'm just glad I didn't put in in at night after a couple beers! I never thought of complaining,...just assumed they're all like that. :blink:
