I remember seeing some pix of an orange VFR last year. Might very well have been yours. I always loved that color on the bike, esp. w/the black wheels and frame. I've been saying for awhile that if I ever have to have my '04 repainted I'd consider orange. Definitely unique color for a VFR.

Glad you joined up and are going to share your supercharging experiment with us. Many of us here dream of bigger power from our Viffers and so there will be a lot of interested eyes watching this thread.
Can you tell us a little more about the supercharger? What is it meant for/out of? Is it an electric powered super charger?

Not sure if that would work for you, just tossing out the thought......

I am going to use the new Gates PowerGrip GT2 synchronous belt to connect the crank to the blower. The Rotrex does come with its own reservoir and filter, which luckily, fit in part of the space that used to be occupied by the airbox.

Well, depending on the boost level you intend to run, the blower will tolerate running at a 1:1 ratio with the crank, as it is rated for 11,840 RPM on the input shaft.
The VFR800's rev limiter kicks in at 11,300 IIRC.
But that's probably too much boost. I don't have the mental energy right now to calculate the conversion from kg/s of air to CFM, etc.
But most blower applications for the street, with stock compression pistons are underdriven quite a bit. Also cuts down on the intake heating without an intercooler.
With the high compression of the VFR, likely only 5-6 pounds of boost would be all that the engine would tolerate. Unless you went the route of intercooler and low compression pistons (which would have to be custom made).
Also, which the heck direction does the VFR's crank rotate? If it's clockwise when viewed from the RHS, then you're in business. But I ASS-ume you've already looked at that since you're this far down the garden path.

Thanks for popping my bike up on the home page, I'm honored. I took that picture the day I got it all back together because I wanted to get some nice shots in before anything happened to it......
The blower will definitely be underdriven. Realistically, there's no room for an intercooler, and I really don't feel like replacing head gaskets or adding water injection, so I'm planning on running a safe level of boost. VFRs have relatively low compression compared to the I4 bikes (11.6 for the viffer, 12.5 & up for the I4s, the busa is the exception at 11:1) so I figure I can run 6-8psi with the right tuning -- time will tell. I'm gonna start small & work my way up, though.
And yes, the crank rotates CW when looking at the right side of the bike.

This story begins at the end of last year. Heading out for one last good ride of the season, I pull out of my driveway, wave hi to the neighbors, look for oncoming traffic at the stop sign, and look back straight again, only to become blinded by the setting sun. When I finally realize where the road is, I am happily greeted by the curb and end up dumping the bike right there in the street, effectively destroying months of hard work and the right side of the bike. You can see pre-crash pictures here.
Completely disgusted by my utter stupidity, I put the bike out of sight & mind for a week, but my inner hot rodder doesn't stay quiet for long. I realize that because of the crash, I can do some things differently than I did before -- tweak the bodywork a bit more, build a custom exhaust, and most importantly, if I have to take all the body panels off again, why not add one of these:

Thought I'd add a few new pics. If anyone has ever wondered what's behind your clutch cover, here ya go.

The connector will bolt right where the "12" bolt rests and proceed out the timing cover (which will be modified to house a sealed bearing).

The image above is what everything looks like with the airbox removed. The emission controls and most of the vacuum tubes will be gone before long. Now to get those injectors out...

Finally, here's a shot of a very basic bracket mockup, a pre-beta bracket if you will. I'll refine it with some thicker material (particle board maybe?) before coming up with a CAD drawing of the final aluminum piece.

Matt - that is indeed photoshopped. I seriously considered chopping the tail & changing the suspension (and still do), but I'd rather have more go than show, so right now, those mods are on the back burner. I am however making a custom exhaust, but unlike that picture, it will be a muffled reverse cone, so it should be much quieter and fit the lines of the bike (and stock tail section) better than the slash cut. Very scientific testing has taught me that a VFR sounds better muffled than not...
I'm definitely looking forward to the stealth element the Rotrex will provide. Due to the internal design (it uses a planetary roller friction drive, not gears), it will be nearly silent while operating, and is also very efficient. The model I have can spin up to 150,000 RPM! Since it's centrifugal, the power delivery will be very easy on the drivetrain and very controllable with the wrist, and I'm looking to get a realistic 140-150 RWHP out of it when I'm done.
I'll keep you guys posted with my progress. I've learned a tremendous amount of information so far, and can't wait to get this thing back on the road.

Not a bad idea, but the space constraints on this bike are ridiculous. If I didn't care about putting the fairings back on, this project would be much much easier. As I have it now, the piping will be a straight shot to the new plenum, and since I won't be running very high boost, the air shouldn't heat up excessively.
A larger radiator was (is) a consideration, and I will most likely be upgrading the oil cooler to a larger unit.
Why are you changing the drive system, is it to reduce the belt width and save space, do you think you are going to be able to get the belt system past the radiator and keep the stock faring.

Also, thanks to everyone for the compliments on my bike & the new project. I'm truly humbled. When I bought the bike originally, I figured that if I was going to put it back together, I'd put it back together the way I wanted it, so I studied pictures of VFRs scattered across the internet, found what I liked, found what I didn't like, figured out what made the bike look trimmer & meaner, and went through many different photoshop iterations until I came up with a design I liked. In fact, it was only at the last minute that I decided to leave the bike mostly orange -- I had wanted a simple black graphic scheme to compliment the tangelo, but after seeing the bike with all the bodywork in place, I decided to just have the black on the upper fairing. Of course my mind never rests, and I don't know if the bike will ever truly be "done."

I have been looking into a big bore kit for a 750 when it tranforms back to a road bike (swiffer finish yours please) but for hp gain it's alot of $$ with not a great reward. This however would boost hp to something I would really enjoy (I enjoy riding any VFR more than any other bike, but it does shit me to be overtaken only because they have 50 more hp) & being super charged which has no spool lag etc like a turbo could work very well. My greatest fear in bolting on a turbo is going into a corner to hot & needing just a little more throttle to hold the line & hiting boost arrgggg.
Please keep posting away because I'm also watching.
Also what are you doing for extra fuel? I have no idea what kind of duty cycle the VFR's injectors currently run, but I am guessing some sort of supplemental injectors might be required. Or are you planning on replacing the stock injectors and running larger ones? If so, can the factory ECU still work?
Very interested in how this all pans out: I REALLY want to build a turbo Viffer in a few years. I don't really need the extra performance: enough people know I ride conservatively. I want to do it as a challenge and to do something unique. Unlike yourself, I will not care about the cosmetics too much. In fact, the uglier it looks, the better. I'll chop fairings where needed to fit all the bits. I want just the sight of it to make people a little nervous.

haha....it's not on-board ballast but energy reserves, stored up for when the nuk hits (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif)

QDawg -- A custom intake is in the works. I want to get the blower mounted before I finalize the design, but it will be fabricated out of aluminum sheet & tube. As for the fuel, RC Engineering injectors are on the way. I don't think they will be a pure drop in, so some mods will have to take place to get them to work (by the way, stock S2000 injectors are a perfect replacement, but require a higher fuel pressure & if bought new, are pricier than the RCs). Also, the stock pump will give way to a larger Walbro unit. Overall, I'm building this fuel system with plenty left in reserve, so there is no danger of leaning out, no danger of overloading the pump & components, and more power available if you want to crank it up (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/491.gif)
Tuning will be handled with a Power Commander which, hopefully, should properly meter the fuel throughout the rpm range. Also, I'm going to use a Wideband Commander to dial this puppy in when I can't get to a dyno.
vanion2 -- Wouldn't that be nice! I've actually been very careful in planning, documenting, & designing this project so that if this does indeed work, I can make additional kits. I'm blown away by the positive response this (and the bike) has gotten so far, so who knows what the future holds -- supercharger kits? carbon fiber body panels? auxiliary rocket boosters?

In my experience, you should be able to get a part number and fitment from the injector manufacturer that will closely match the fuel demand of the original VFR injectors, but at a higher volume flow rate. As the boost pressure from the Rotrex will be reasonably linear, it could save a lot of mapping time on the dyno.
It might be worth linking the bike up to an oscilloscope or engine analyser to measure the duty cycle of the injector, if it is above 70% then the injector will be useless for the supercharger addition. If it is anywhere near 60%, you have enough duty time spare to supply the addition fuel. As long as the duty cycle is below 75% the injector coil will not overheat and fail prematurely.
The fuel pressure could be increased, however the flow rate increase of the injectors will not be linear, and can make for awkward fuel mapping, but a small increase in pressure and a low original duty cycle should be enough to provide adequate fuelling. I seriously doubt you would need to change the pump, but of course i cant be sure.
I'm not claiming to know it all, i just wanted to add my bit to possibly save some money for the first people who develop this mod, it will not be cheap.

Now, I don't know what the flow rate of our injectors are, but I do know that the CBR1100XX uses the same style injectors and flow 335cc/min (check out this nice writeup, he sent them out to get flow tested). According to the math, with the higher BSFC required by forced induction, even if the VFR had the same injectors that the Blackbird has, you wouldn't be able to use them with the stock fuel pressure of 36psi in this supercharged application.
Again, I want to build the fuel system with plenty left in reserve, so larger units are needed. In regard to the fuel pump, the Honda manual actually outlines the free flow rate (0psi) @ 150cc/10sec = 900cc/min = 14.3 gal/hr. Now, if we work backwards from the known power that a naturally aspirated VFR800 produces, the max fuel flow rate is ~ 12.9 gal/hr, which shows that the stock pump is pretty much maxed out. Therefore, a higher flow pump will have to be incorporated -- Walbro pumps are affordable and are a direct replacement for the stock Denso pump.

He speculated 600cc bikes adding 50hp pretty easily.
THEN, he pointed out that Kawi had done this very mod to their 1400cc watercraft. (a zx-14 w/ fins)
The thing produces 1500# of thrust - would lift the machine vertically out of the water if it was controllable / direct-able to that orientation.
He ended the article challenging Kawi to bring the huffer to their bikes.

Well, that and the prospect of blowing the head gasket(s), or causing any other internal damage, and having to take it all apart, at which point the internals would be getting upgraded and the blower pulley would be getting smaller. I've actually tackled many of the toughest hurdles already, but I sure will be glad when my biggest concern is getting it tuned properly, and the wideband should help out there.

I read that article too. There are many positives to adding forced induction to IC engines, hopefully I'll find out the biggest benefit shortly! I haven't done any research on that Kawi setup, but I know they are using a positive displacement blower (most likely screw) which essentially does exactly what Cameron describes -- increase displacement w/o increasing displacement. They make perfect sense in that application since there is plenty of room to fit a decent sized unit, and also since you want power right off idle.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't want power over the entire rpm range, but I don't think I need an overabundance of grunt under 4-5000rpm on a stock wheelbase, non-lowered sportbike (my bike gets the front end up in 3rd now, I can't imagine the power wheelies after I get this done). The rotrex should provide ample thrust when wanted, but for cruising around town or on the highway, I will be appreciating the lower internal stresses that a centrifugal/turbo provides, all while keeping a predictable boost curve.

A small point, but some research bosch did years ago found certain high demand engines (boosted or with aggressive cams) benefitted from larger fuel rails around the injectors. turns out there can be localized pressure drops around them causing a lean condition with normal sized fuel rails. some performance systems they designed after this wetn to fuel lines close to an inch on inside ID. I used to use a large diameter rubber hose to connect the rails and pump and releif valve, maybe 3/4" which acted as a capacitor as they would swell slightly under pressure and then if there was a localized drop they could release what what they held at roughly the same pressure.
a full metal system, with full pressure and pump off, only gushes a tiny amount when you pull off a line, but the one with the hoses always gushes a significant amount more, at pressure for a few seconds.
it seemed to make a diff on the perfomance porsches when they would hit their power peak, and rev through the fastest part of the rev range.
just a thought.

Sounds like you ahve been thinking about this for a long time. What are you most afraid of in the build?
Good question. I guess at this point I'm most worried about getting it running before summer! Well, that and the prospect of blowing the head gasket(s), or causing any other internal damage, and having to take it all apart, at which point the internals would be getting upgraded and the blower pulley would be getting smaller. I've actually tackled many of the toughest hurdles already, but I sure will be glad when my biggest concern is getting it tuned properly, and the wideband should help out there.
And yep, I've been thinking about this since I got the bike.
A small point, but some research bosch did years ago found certain high demand engines (boosted or with aggressive cams) benefitted from larger fuel rails around the injectors. turns out there can be localized pressure drops around them causing a lean condition with normal sized fuel rails. some performance systems they designed after this wetn to fuel lines close to an inch on inside ID. I used to use a large diameter rubber hose to connect the rails and pump and releif valve, maybe 3/4" which acted as a capacitor as they would swell slightly under pressure and then if there was a localized drop they could release what what they held at roughly the same pressure.
a full metal system, with full pressure and pump off, only gushes a tiny amount when you pull off a line, but the one with the hoses always gushes a significant amount more, at pressure for a few seconds.
it seemed to make a diff on the perfomance porsches when they would hit their power peak, and rev through the fastest part of the rev range.
just a thought.

Good point Chris. All this talk of capacitance in hydraulic systems reminds me of dynamic systems analysis back at PSU...
I'll find out pretty quickly if it's getting enough fuel once I hook up the O2 sensor and/or strap it on the dyno. I hoping that the stock rails and fuel line can cope with the increased demand; only time will tell.

Zero. As it sits, the outlet just clears the frame, and since there are no 'ram-air' holes in the frame, or any other place for the intake piping to go, the blower has to sit right there, and it can only work because the airbox is gone which allows a hole to open up. Take a look here at what I mean:

This is looking at the top of the cylinder head, down through where the airbox used to sit. Like I said, it's tiiiight. Also, if you move the blower back any further or up any higher, it interferes with the front forks. Remember, the oil reservoir and air filter need to fit somewhere in there as well...

That very well might be a solution, though I might go for a completely aftermarket job as well. You can get a small automotive jobber from Summit Racing for about $60. I need to see where the blower and air filter end up resting, then I'll tackle the oil cooler.
I realized that the next step to getting everything properly lined up, and getting some good brackets designed, was to rigidly align the blower with the crank. I figured out where the rotrex could be nestled, determined the center-to-center distance, drilled a piece of extruded aluminum, and bolted everything together (with the proper spacing, of course). Here's what it looks like:

Yes, but it's gonna be tricky. The tougher part is going to be getting the radiator to fit around the blower itself, and running the coolant hoses such that they do not interfere with the drive or the supercharger intake & air filter.
Actually, the toughest part of this whole project has been making everything work without modifying (read: hacking off, grinding away, or welding onto) existing parts and/or the frame. I want this kit to be built so that if I ever need to go back to stock, nothing will be stopping me.

That's true. I know many of the turbo kits for bikes come with FMUs, but I have zero experience with them and from what I can gather, they have some drawbacks (not as tuneable as ecu-based systems, can lean out when you don't want it to). I'm trying to keep this as simple and as clean as possible, and I really don't feel like running fuel lines everywhere. Ultimately though, I felt that I could tune the bike better using larger injectors and the power commander.
It's almost a guessing game as to which fuel system setup is best. I made a decision a little while back as to which direction to go, but it wasn't easy deciding between 1) larger pump, RC injectors, stock fpr, 2) larger pump, S2000 injectors, modified fpr, or 3) larger pump, stock injectors, rising rate fpr. Price was not really a factor, since the options end up around the same amount, but taking everything into account, option #1 seemed best suited for the task at hand.
Okay, time for some updates. I've got the crank interconnect and pulleys all designed, and they should be well underway by next week. I'm having my dad's shop cut the teeth and splines, so the price should be right :D
Here are some shots of new items that have arrived. First up is the belt and bearing.

Not too exciting, but another step closer nonetheless. Also, I mentioned earlier that I was having a custom exhaust made, and guess what arrived yesterday...

The reverse cone muffler is the end piece of the exhaust. The first part consists of a stock VFR exhaust pipe cut at the muffler section and stuffed with a Car Chemistry 3-disk insert. To say the sound is awesome is a huge understatement, and it's completely unlike any VFR I've ever heard. I had Doug up at ARC Fabrication make it custom for me from a drawing I gave him. His work is awesome and his prices are great. Really nice guy, too. The pictures don't do it justice, it really looks like a factory race part when you see it in person.
When I found out the injectors I bought weren't exactly drop-in replacements for the VFR units, I was faced with 2 choices: 1) modify the throttle body to accept the RCs, or 2) modify the RCs to accept the throttle body.
Here's what I chose to do:

To make these injectors fit the throttle body required taking some material off the body and snout of each injector. So, I made a split collar that fit the injectors perfectly, then chucked them up in the lathe and took the ODs down to the right size.

You can see in the above shot a before & after. Don't worry, there's still plenty of material left on there for the injectors to function normally.
I wasn't done yet. The RC injectors are actually longer than the stockers too, so spacers needed to be made for both the injectors and the fuel rail.

In case you are wondering, raising the fuel rails altered the center distance of the stock connector between the two rails, so to fix that, I found a round piece of steel with the proper radius, placed the connector on top of that, and inserted both items into the press. Very carefully, the connector was worked to fit the new center distance.
Hopefully the pigtail adapters will be here shortly so I can button up the throttle body once and for all. And of course, more updates to come...
I got the pigtails, and of course, they aren't exactly plug and play. The female end fits the RCs perfectly, but the male end is slightly different than the stock Honda injector plug. After some research, I've only managed to find one place that sells the exact pigtails that I need, but they cost 4x the amount I paid!

So, I found that by trimming some of the plastic off the plug end, they can be directly connected to the original wiring harness. I did that on all 4 pigtails, plugged them in, ziptied them up, and now the throttle body is complete.

I've been quite busy this past week making drawings of all the different parts I need to get machined. So far, I've designed & drawn up 6 separate components (with the help of good 'ole AutoCAD) and still need to design & draw up at least that many more, and let me tell you, with no easy access to a CMM machine, some of these parts are -t e d i o u s- to figure out. My goal of not chopping/modifying the existing hardware/frame/components has made this project tricky indeed, and my self-imposed deadline of June 1st is fast approaching. But hey, I wanted a challenge :D
I can give you guys some more pictures of freshly arrived items. First up is my non-bling, super low cost blow-off valve. It's a Bosch unit I picked up on ebay for a princely sum of $25. Originally off a Porsche Turbo, it should be more than up to the task of venting excess pressure on my low-boost VFR. I could have gone with a billet adjustable unit, but from what I've read, this valve has lightning fast response, and since I don't care about being able to hold 25+psi, I might as well save $150. I've also got an old K&N breather filter that fits perfectly on the outlet, and should quiet down the 'pssssht' slightly.

Also, I can give you a sneak peak at the intake I'll be making.
I bought some mandrel bent aluminum tubes which will form the the runner legs and directly connect the throttle body with the plenum.

No, I'm not building a tunnel ram, I just have the tubes sitting in the throttle body for some pre-visualization. Try to imagine the legs much shorter coming out of the throttle body, making a 90, then entering into a central plenum which is fed directly by the supercharger. Wait till you see how I mount the intake to the throttle body -- it's gonna be pretty slick. I'll get cracking on this once I get the brackets machined and I can mount the blower.
Alright, now I literally have to go back to the drawing board...
While I'm waiting for some parts to be completed, I thought I'd share a little bit of progress. Since I have the clutch cover pulled off, I decided to upgrade the stock springs to Barnett units. The plates are in excellent condition, and from what I've read, the hot ticket clutch setup is the factory plates with these springs, so hopefully it'll stand up to the extra power. The Barnetts are longer and a little stiffer than the stockers, and once installed, the clutch lever has a nice firm feel to it (not far from stock, actually).

I also got the pump in. It's a Walbro unit with the same connector style and inlet & outlet location as the Denso unit. Hard to tell from the picture below, but the body diameter is ever-so-slightly larger than stock.

This was the easiest mod so far -- truly a plug and play deal. The only finagling required was due to the aforementioned pump body being larger than stock. I simply took a set of needlenose pliers, squeezed the clamp together (which contoured the metal band around the pump) and put the screw in. Done. I already powered it up and it sounds great -- I can't wait 'till it's pumping massive amounts of fuel to those hungry cylinders :thumbsup:

I thought I'd start mocking up the intake today, and the quickest way to do that is with a nice piece of cardboard:

I cut the pipes down the shop and made sure that the ends sticking in the throttle body are all square & of equal length (I left the other end longer for the time being). I know what size plenum I want to run and have actually made a detailed drawing, but detailed drawings don't mean squat without seeing the part in real life. So, I cut a piece of cardboard into close-enough dimensions for mockup, and I'm proud to report that clearance wise, it's all good.
What I'm pondering now is whether to have a top entrance to the plenum or a side feed entrance. There is actually more room on the side with the blower (due to the engine being offset with the cam drive), about 3 inches worth from the end of the plenum to the inside of the frame. You can see what I mean below:

What's bugging me now is the best way to go about plumbing the rotrex to the intake, and where to put the BOV. It's gonna be a tight turn into the intake from the top or the side, and will require a few 45º angles to make it work. I had planned on using a nice silicone T hose to mount the BOV, but I don't think there's room for that anymore. I'll figure it out later...
Hot off the CNC -- parts baby!
I said earlier that I had a slick way to mount the new intake to the throttle body, and here it is:

The intake runner tubes will be a tight slip fit through the holes of the throttle body mounting plates & will bottom against a small lip in the throttle body. These plates are held down the same way the stock airbox is, with (2) M5 bolts around each runner. How does it seal, you ask?

Machined into the base are grooves for properly sized Viton o-rings, so no rubber/silicone connectors & hose clamps are needed to hold the plenum to the throttle body, just the 8 socket head cap screws.
I'm still undecided whether I should weld the tubes in or use special aluminum epoxy. I'm afraid that if I weld it, the base will distort slightly and compromise the seal, so I'm really investigating the epoxy. After all, Lotus epoxies their entire cars together (welding aluminum can reduce strength around the weld by up to 50%), and with thin wall tubing, it might just be the ticket.
I also got the PAIR blockoff plates. I designed them to accept flathead cap screws since I need every thousandth near the intake of the blower. Nothing fancy, but they'll get the job done.

Believe it or not, this used to be the timing cover:

This mod required some thought to accomplish, but it turned out great. The bearing needed to be prefectly centered in the cover in order to avoid improper loading of the crankshaft, and believe me, it's perfectly centered.
The two small holes are for a spanner wrench that will tighten the cover back down (since the original hex is now long gone).

It's a slight press fit into the cover, and the double seal assures that no oil can escape from the crankcase.

I already know exactly how I want to do it; more expensive - yes, more parts - yes, not as nice looking - yes, much much easier to build - YES. It took me hours to hand work those bends back into round & to cut them the exact length and perfectly square.
I also am pretty certain that I will weld the whole assembly together. There's one more place I want to call about the epoxy, but I have found a very capable welder that can do the job for me. Either way, this is the last all aluminum intake manifold I'll make.
Having said all this, here's what I got accomplished this weekend. First, I needed to cut the plenum material and mill holes where the runners will attach.

I then used a flycutter to finish bore the holes and counterbore them 0.050" to allow the tubes to locate in the plenum.

The reason I went with 1/4" wall square tube is so that I could add a full size radius on the inside of the plenum without having to make a separate component. To add the radiused entry, I ground a radius into a piece of tool steel, mounted it into the flycutter, and then cut from the underside until the radius was generated:

I had it made out of 3/8" thick 7075, so it's plenty strong & still lightweight. I just need to make standoffs, the upper bracket, and the left connector bracket and the whole assembly can be mounted up for good.

Anyhoo, I've started to wire in the Wideband Commander, I'm finishing the exhaust, and today, I got the crank connector all finished up:

I should be able to finalize the bracketry now and get the radiator fitted. Plus, I'll be able to figure out exactly where the bodywork needs to be trimmed/clearanced/heated & bent into shape to fit the drive assembly behind the plastic. As for the pulleys themselves, once I'm done with the test-fitting, they will be sent down to get hard anodized and the flanges will be installed.

As you can see, there's not a whole lot of room for the belt or pulleys, but most of it can be fixed by spacing out the fairing & massaging certain parts. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the belt and pulleys are right up against the plastic. Some sections will have to go under the knife (aka dremel).

The view from up front. Plenty of cold air coming through there, plus the radiator hoses clear both the filter and the blower. I'll mount the oil cooler just below the blower, though I'm still not sure whether to reuse the old one or get a new one.
Just to clarify an earlier statement I made, check out this picture:

Pay no attention to that bolt sticking out the end -- it's only temporary. Anyway, you can clearly see there's a good 3/4" of space between the radiator and the belt, and the radiator is even spaced out from the engine a bit, so there should be no clearance issues.

Change the blower, raise the fuel pressure, lower the compression with forged pistons, and drop in some beefier rods and you're looking at 300+. So, how fast do you want to go??

This thread is fantastic. I will never be able to put something like this on my VFR (mostly because I would rather have a second bike for the money) but I check in here every day.

In fact, this little C15-60 Rotrex and the fuel system I've put together can easily support 200+ hp. Change the blower, raise the fuel pressure, lower the compression with forged pistons, and drop in some beefier rods and you're looking at 300+. So, how fast do you want to go??

I learned the hard way many years ago that moving up in HP is not always a great plan, (was and still am a Ford Mustang fan), Other parts are effected like the transmission for starters.. the clutch, drive train parts ect.. also the overall drive ability comes into play, sometimes too much is great for the track and overkill for the street.. Power only available in an RPM too high to run everyday.. Supercharging a VFR is new territory on a bike, for me, with weight Vs. Hp being very different... but given the issues, I still enjoy a blast of power now and then, and very interested in realizing a VFR's potential... the little boy in me is still alive and well (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif)

I agree with you 100%. I was speaking hypothetically with the huge hp gains, and I too know from experience (and found out the hard way) what comes with big power. I think the amount of power I'm proposing here is realistic and shouldn't be too overkill for the bike or the rider. You do speak the truth though, to get x amount of horsepower, you need to spend y-squared amount of money upgrading all facets of the vehicle. If someone ever wanted a 300hp drag VFR, it is possible -- for a price.

This was one of those weekends where certain things (other than the VFR) just had to get done, but I still managed to find some time to mock up the radiator bracket. This is where it will sit:

The radiator is not in the same spot, but it's still close enough to the original location that cooling should not be affected. Here's the view through the fairing:

I'm sure it would be possible, most likely using an electric clutch a la automotive AC compressor...although then the non-moving compressor section and any intercooling devices would seem to become a major impediment to non-pressurised intake air. The Rotrex probably does not make as much parasitic drag as say, a Roots-style blower, so I don't think there'd be too much to be gained from turning it off.

I know that's how it is in the movie... The biggest problem with that is your fuel mapping would be way off. It sounds to me that you need a supercharger in a bottle, a little N20 for ya...

Also, a simple flat piece of flat plastic screwed to the inside of the fairing would make a nice lightweight sheild for the belt. i know i sometimes stick my hands in those holes to warm them while riding on cold rainy days.
i suppose i should just get grip warmers...

Yea it's expensive!!! But Rates a 10 in the looks category. I'm interested in seeing how much the belt will interfere with the faring and what will be cut out vs. what will remain...cosmetics in general. Interesting comments about switching it on and off. A lot more work for ....why?? Fuel savings? Its a neat idea and I am a Mad Max fan.. but works only in the movies. My V6-71 with the belt off was a pig and would barely run with its two 750's (cfm) carbs. Interesting note during the time the belt was off the "roots" style blower would spin, if your ran up the RPM and tried to hold the blower pulley you were asking for trouble. There was more force than you can imagine spinning the blower just under vacuum. Final thought, It will be interesting the fuel mileage after the "Torocharger" is in place under a low boost or road trip situation..
Economy? Seriously, any bike apart from a small-displacement scooter or commuter bike is basically just an expensive toy, when all is said and done, so who cares? Mebbe it's just a commentary on the VFR's "jack of all trades" nature that there are owners who want it to be economical and well-behaved, while others want more hooliganism in the mix.

Here's the upper bracket, just off the machine. This part bolts where the oil cooler bracket used to reside & will very rigidly tie-in and locate the top of the supercharger bracket.

It's actually two parts - I need to get the lower section welded to the top section, but otherwise, it's ready to go.
As for the belt guard issue, I would still do something even though the plastics are shrouding it...reason being flex and deflection of the plastic possibly fouling the belt. Standoffs of some sort would probably be sufficient for most non-dropped-bike situations.
Have you ever seen Mad Max (I think they call it The Road Warrior" in the USA)? Interceptor... supercharged...

I've thought of that. If I end up producing kits, I'll run extras to sell. If I don't produce kits, I'll sell them anyway. You'd probably be looking at $35-40 anodized, a little cheaper in natural -- just ballpark figures. I've had so many parts made; I really need to do some sort of cost analysis to figure out what everything will run me on a small production scale, which brings us to...

I really don't know what the final price might be since I'm still making and buying parts! Depending on how many kits I could sell, the price can vary greatly. If I can amortize the setup, material, and purchased goods cost over 25 kits, it would be a lot less money than if I produce 10 kits, or 5 kits, or 1 kit. Basically, the more people that want one, the cheaper it gets for everybody. I can tell you this, forum members & especially anyone who has posted in this thread would get a discount, but until I get this thing done (and running!) & have a chance to look everything over, I can't even give you a ballpark estimate.

When you 'VTEC' this thing, I have to have one. A VTEC fitted with one would go like a cut snake! Make sure that you have some available to send down to OZ! There is no doubt that if these things come in at a reasonable price you will seriously dent any Gen 7 sales.

The load of a centrifugal pump (supercharger) is based a lot on the amount of air being moved. Therefore, centrifugal superchargers do not actually rob the engine of much power during cruise, almost as if they are spinning in a vacuum. As long as it is tuned, MPG should not suffer. I had a Paxton on my 92 Mustang and even with it having the high heat producing ball drive, I lost very little, if any fuel economy cuising on the highway. All things considered, the extra power could let you get by with a higher final gear ratio, which could result in a better net fuel economy for the overall performance of the bike.

Thank you also for taking the time out to answer questions & feed back, I'm a toolmaker & did my trade on CNC machines so that side of things I understand (I'm not in trade anymore) but when it comes to understanding fuel delivery etc. Thats something out of my scope without some major study so a project by a eng & the design stages being forth coming are outstanding when you can read & see what your doing & then go off & read mat in that direction.

I don't want turbo & big bore kit is allot of $$ for very little gain, so you can understand mine & everybody else's interest in your undertaking.

I was on the PSU team from '03-'05. Both years I was there we came in 6th overall, placing highly in the driving & design events. The year after I left, they ended up finishing 2nd. I had a great experience on that team, and learned that the lighter you can make something, the better (we had the lightest 4-cylinder car by something like 40-50 lbs -- with fuel, we clocked in at 380 lbs). Everyone wondered how we kept the weight so low (much like some people on this board wondering how to shave pounds off the VFR), and I'll tell you what, every little bit counts & adds up, which is why we drilled out titanium bolts and made our foot pedals out of titanium sheet.

With a 1000RR, I can see why you think the 750 is down on power! I definitely see some interest in fuel injecting the 4th gen, and wonder how difficult an 800 swap would be. I'm thinking that a standalone FMU would probably have to be used, but the 800 electronics just might swap over with some tweaking. As far as a kit would go, changes to the bracketry would have to be made due to the different frame design (I think a 6th gen might accept the parts as is), but I'm sure it can be done. We'll see what happens..

I am expecting it to put down an honest 140-150 hp on the dyno (if my calculations are correct). We shall see what happens. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/rolleyes.gif)
Look at your demographic data. From what I have seen the average VFR guy is in his late 30's to mid 40's. I have also observed, by looking at how they spend money on options, that they have a good deal of disposable income... guys with an extra 3-5 to play with if they think it's worth it.
I have a friend in Detroit (right on Michigan Ave. and a mile from Ford) who developed, built and mass produced the Trilogy supercharger for the Mercury Marauder. He started with his own car and went on to sell over 100 kits - and this is for a car that has a total production run of under 12K! He did it all as a subset of his other business so I suspect that he could tell you how to do a project like this without it taking over your life. If, when you are done, you want me to collect info from him about production, marketing, sales, etc. let me know. I'm confident that he would be more than willing to give us his time. He might even be willing to clue us in on some of his parts manufacturers. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/smile.gif)

'01-'03 Cal Poly Pomona here. Nothing prepares you better than FSAE. I'm still involved with FSAE as a sponsor of CPP and a volunteer at FSAE West.
+1 on the weight savings, most reliable and controllable horsepower upgrade you can do. After the charger is done, are you going to fab up some lighter components? I'm dying to see some FEA on a honeycomb/carbon fiber swingarm or a monocoque rear sub frame.
One of CPP's '06 teammembers works for me now. He built 13" carbon FSAE wheels for his senior project. You have a machine shop, he has an autoclave...just a thought.
The past week has been frustrating. Parts I need still haven't come in, and everything I do seems to take longer than expected. Oh well, I've just got to keep plugging along. Here's what's new:
I figured out where the gauges needed to go, grabbed some sheet aluminum, layed out a design, and cut away:

I so badly wanted to have a shot with everything in place, all lit up, but the wiring is insane and I couldn't get it done tonight. I have so many wires going to so many places, it's really hard to keep track of everything -- it's like a jigsaw puzzle figuring out what has to go where and how it all fits together cleanly & properly. A few more hours tomorrow and I should have it done. Wondering what those little holes in the left bracket are for yet?
Now for everybody that was wondering how it was going to be done...

I had to get the pulleys hard anodized first. Machining the stainless flanges came next, and they were then heated significantly & dropped on the pulleys. I allowed them to slowly cool back to room temp and shrink onto the pulley, into the machined groove -- they are going nowhere fast. The 20º inside angle is per Gates and should allow smooth tracking even if the pulleys are out of alignment slightly.
Finally, I'll post up some pics of the completed exhaust and O2 sensor.

Hey, where are the wires? There's actually a huge connector hidden behind the foot guard and I was able to thread the rest of the wire through an existing hole in the engine block.

I still need the radiator bracket machined, I need to make the idler, the intake and upper bracket need to be welded, the intake connector tubing needs to be completed, I've got to remount the coils, yadda yadda yadda, hopefully it won't be too much longer... :blink:

To record data with the Wideband Commander, you simply flip the toggle switch down; the LED I wired in comes on to let you know when you're recording and when you're not. The housing taped to the top is the knock light/shift light -- it will be permanent once I get the bodywork back from paint.
It was too dark to get any good pictures of this setup, but I have to admit, it looks trick in person. What you can't see are the gauge cups that match & blend in with the rest of the bike -- I wanted just the faces to draw attention, and that's what I ended up with.

I have to give a big shout out to Bill at Halan Manufacturing in Glenside for machining the CNC'd parts for me (in record time, no less). He's been a big help in getting this thing to the point where it's at -- if I would have cut the parts myself, I might be half as far as I am now.

Reason I ask is that the starter clutch can crack after a while; say 50k miles of service. Mine went at about that mileage.
In all reality, there's zero extra load put on the engine by the Rotrex at cranking rpms. You can spin the blower by hand, quite quickly, with almost no effort required, so I'm not worried about that in the least. That's a big reason why I like this style of supercharger so much -- it's very, very mechanically efficient.

My VFR time was cut short this weekend due to attending 3 graduation parties, but I still made some progress. Sort of.
First off, I wanted to watch my boost gauge do its thing instead of sitting there at zero, so I hooked up some vacuum line, gave it a lil blow...and nothing happened. Long story short, after hours of working with a voltmeter, I trace the problem to a bad ground connection between the gauge and the gauge connector. So, I make a short ground strap, check it again, and it works perfectly. Awesomely, actually -- quick, fluid response and the warning/peak recall functions work great.
Next I decided to tackle the intake tubing. Piece of cake, right? A few connectors here, some bent tubing there...only it's not that easy. It's never that easy. The problem is the space between the plenum box and the frame, or lack thereof. Even though I have close to 3" of space, there's just no good way to make the silicone 90 I have (or any other brand of silicone 90) work in there.
Also, I originally planned for the intake to have aluminum bends and some silicone connectors (including the T-piece for the bov), but once I got everything fit in there, well, quite frankly, it looks junky and piecemeal. So now I'm back to where I was 2 weeks ago, and need to decide how to get this intake worked out. I've found tight radius cast aluminum elbows and tight-turn "cobra head" rubber elbows, but none are the right size and will require adapters to work. So, tonight I think I'll have a nice thinking session out in the garage and decide on the best course of action to take.

Anyway, I figured out the intake (yes Dan, I think your technique worked :thumbsup: ). First, let me show you the original plan:

As nice as it would be to run the intake along the side, it just isn't happening. You can see here that while it looks like there's room, remember that the silicone 90 is sticking inside the plenum about an inch, so when you put it in its required location, the bend becomes less than ideal. Also, the T-piece, which I thought would simplify things, only made the setup more complicated and crowded. Thus, we look at design #2:

It's oh-so-simple -- a silicone 45 will come off the blower (aluminum in picture) and attach to an aluminum 90 (silicone in picture), which then will meet up with a close-radius cast aluminum 90-degree elbow (not pictured) and go straight into the top of the plenum box. Equal air distribution and fewer parts are the results of this revised intake, as well as smooth bends & easy assembly.
The only downside is now I have to weld a nipple onto the aluminum section for the bov, but that's no biggie. Pictured below is where the oil canister and bov will go:

It's always good to make deadlines for "end of summer".
When me and my dad started to build our summer cottage (actually it is a log house with all modern comforts) in April 2002, after 12 months work we made a deadline to have the cottage and especially the Sauna ready by Christmas. It was ready by Christmas... in the year 2004 *grin*.
I really hope you get the bike running by the end of the summer. Preferably this year.

As you can see, the new intake is no higher than the old one -- plus, it's sticking up an extra 1/2" in the air due to the runner tubes that sit down inside the throttle body. You can imagine how much room there would be if I was able to go with the side feed entrance.

It works folks, it works mighty well. The blower is extremely quiet, with just a slight whistle/whine while cruising around; it's actually quite complimentary sounding to the gear driven cams. I am completely blown away that the bike can run with the rudimentary fuel map I have loaded -- while riding, the air/fuel ratio dances all over the place from 11 to 15, but it idles great and runs strong.
Initial riding impressions: cruising below 5000 rpm (I have to keep the revs low until the blower breaks in) the bike feels just like stock, but keep it near that 4500 rpm mark, and even in 3rd gear, you can tell the bike just wants to start pulling. Like I said before, the blower is very quiet but you can hear it, especially on decel, and it sounds mighty fine. The exhaust is definitely a bit louder than I previously thought, but it sounds absolutely wicked (was that a MotoGP bike that just went by?) yet still streetable.
I have some serious tuning that needs to be done before the bike is good to go, but I've certainly crested the hill. The belt tracks straight and true, and I can't see it ever coming off. The intake and tubing clears the tank, I don't have any oil or coolant leaks, and my temp didn't get above 175 (granted, it was a short jaunt).

Once I get it running better, I'll come up with a real video to demonstrate the bike in all its supercharged glory. Until then, enjoy what I have posted here.
If just cruising around, the manifold pressure is in a constant state of vacuum, but as soon as you open up the throttle, the boost instantly jumps up -- I was seeing 2.5psi at ~5500rpm, which essentially is like a 12hp/12ft-lb gain at the wheel. The power delivery is electric smooth -- think of a subway taking off, that's what it feels like. The sound is absolutely intoxicating; between the new exhaust, the gear-driven cams, and the incredible whirl of supercharger under boost (which is far more pronounced than when cruising), I don't think there's a better sounding bike on the planet.
I recorded some good data with the wideband, so I'll be working on a new map today, but I can't wait to head out and feel the new power in 2nd or 1st gear. So far, everyhing is a-ok, though I think the oil cooler does indeed work too well. For the whole ride, I never saw temps rise above 175. When I take it out again, I'll keep an eye on that, but I can easily forsee adding an oil thermostat.

Yeah, it's a fake novelty plate. Pretty subtle, huh? And yes, the opening of the pipe really is that big.
This is all I can say. VFRs were never supposed to have this much power, but boy-oh-boy does the chassis handle it well!!
I don't know if you guys can tell, but I'm quite pumped. I went out for a 35 mile ride on some nice smooth backroads with no traffic, and decided to test the upper rpm range out for the first time. WOOOHOOOO!
Let's just say that at 10000rpm the bike is pulling ~6.25psi, and at 11000 it jumps to 7.25psi, which is right where I wanted it to land. No pinging, no blown engine, no blown head gasket, just the sweet sweet sound of the rotrex spinning at full tilt and the short 'psst' of the BOV in-between shifts. The acceleration is remarkable. Breathtaking. Can you say 3rd gear power wheelies? On a VFR??
What does this all mean power-wise? Well Fixer, I think this bike is going to come very close to your gix's power numbers -- I'll find out tomorrow when I hopefully strap it on the dyno and get some preliminary runs in. I can't believe how good the fueling is in the upper rpm range. Actually, the fueling is quite good everywhere, except for a lower rpm 10% throttle stumble/surge that I still need to iron out, but beyond that, this bike runs terrific.
I was literally having a hard time keeping the front end on the ground in 2nd with the throttle pinned past 7 grand -- the thing just puuuullllllllllllls. I am seriously contemplating changing the gearing around since 6th gear now feels like 4th, and I find the bike tacked up quite often! Not to mention that 1-2 shift coming awfully quickly...
I weigh 220lbs -- a 150lb rider would not know what to do with themselves on this bike.
On a side note, whenever I take it up around 10000rpm, the FI light pops on. The bike still rides exactly the same, but the idle climbs up to 1400rpm from its normal 1200rpm. Once I turn the bike off & on again, it resets. I had previous error codes in the computer, so I can't gather much from that as of yet, but anyone have an idea what could be going on? The bike runs exactly the same, with the only difference being a slightly higher idle.
Okay, hopefully by tomorrow I'll have some numbers for you all, but until then, just try imagining almost 7psi right in the powerband of the engine. MMMMMMmmmmm.

New vs. old (I only took the bike to ~11400rpm in this pull, while the original run was maxxed at 12500rpm, hence the discrepancy, but notice how similar the operating conditions are):

As you might notice, the dyno has been fixed -- turned out to be some minor glitches with the Winpep software & a bad power supply. The torque curve is flat as a pancake from 8000 on, hovering at the 63-65lb-ft mark, with over 50lb-ft available from 5500 & up (note: I did not have a torque curve for the before run, so I cannot compare the two side by side without interpolation). The air/fuel curve looks pretty good for no dyno tuning -- I'll just richen it up some in the high r's.
I put the Staintune pipe back on for testing since my shorty is completely unproven in the power production department.
Also, my bike in the before run had the following things done: PCII with map dyno-optimized for 93 octane, K&N filter, Staintune slip-on, ceramic coated headers, intake snorkel removed.
My buddy's '99 has a K&N, Staintune, PCII with 87 octane map, and the intake snorkel removed, and his bike pulled 95hp on this same dyno.
With some extra tuning and a few more r's, I'm sure I can get a some more ponies out of it, but all in all, it runs very well at WOT and pulls incredibly hard. This bike is a great compromise between being able to commute at 45 mph with no drama, and being able to lift the front tire in 4th gear -- it's all in how much you twist your right wrist. No unwanted boost spikes, no 7psi when you're trying to manuever in the parking lot, it just feels like any other 800...until you want it to go faster, which it will with ease.

OK, here's the good news: I am going to produce supercharger kits. The 5th gen will be first, followed shortly (I hope) by the 6th gens. You can rest assured that by the time these kits are released, they will be completely debugged and professional in every regard. I know what works and what doesn't, which leads me to the bad news.
After discussing this kit with others who have far more experience (and connections) than I, and from my own personal experience with the bike, some changes are going to be made to certain key components of the kit, mainly the drive, intake, and fueling systems. What this means is that until I get these things ironed out, production will be on hold.
However, I will of course keep you all posted with my progress, and when it's all said and done, expect even better ridability, fuel economy, and durability, with likely an extra 15 ponies to boot. This is the real deal folks. Anyone who wants to take it for a spin before I start breaking it down again, let me know. Maybe we can have a local meet some Saturday or Sunday this fall...
The bottom line: for anyone interested in taking their VFR to a whole 'nother level, now, more than ever, stay tuned (and stay patient :thumbsup:!).

Just thought I'd clarify some things. First, Bailey and I decided to trim the thread down to it's present size as it had grown to mammoth, gargantuan proportions (30 pages, 889 replies) and was taking up just a bit of space on the ole server. I have the entire thread backed up, so if any info is ever needed from it, I'm sure there's some way to make it accessible again.
As Dan has said, I am still very much involved in this process and would like nothing more than to make this supercharger kit a successful, realistic option for all '98-up VFR owners. Not a day goes by that I am not toiling away in the lab to make this kit better, faster, stronger. I have a few suprises in store as well, so anyone interested in adapting this to your bike and picking up 50 ponies along the way, be patient. When I have updates, you will absolutely know about them.
Also, as far as potential buyers are concerned, I'm very hesitiant to throw a price out there until I know for sure the final configuration of the kit, but take a look around the web at other supercharger/turbo kits for bikes and cars. Chances are that this one will end up priced somewhere in that ballpark, so if that's something you can financially manage, stay tuned.
Think about it this way: a supercharger system for a bike you know and love is going to be a whole lot cheaper than buying a new bike, and the bike you know and love will just end up giving you even more to love.

I think I might end up trying a modified group buy; that is, for 2 weeks or so, there would be a sign-up sheet, and depending on how many people have committed to it, a price break would follow. So if three people sign up, it would be full price. Ten people might drop it to 5% off, 50 people might make it 15% off, etc. etc. This is just an idea at this point -- I'll worry about the specifics later as I have slightly more pressing matters to worry about right now.
Honestly, if you are able to change your own oil & spark plugs, or clean your air filter, you can do this install. You will need certain tools (like a torque wrench, metric allen wrenches, sockets of all sorts -- I will have a tool list), and a Honda shop manual is highly recommended, but this kit is truly nothing more than unbolting things and bolting new things back up. The only "fabrication" involved is the minor trimming of the fairing panel, and anybody with a steady hand and a file can do that job.I'm wondering about difficulty or ease of install. I'm sure I'd need some help with some stuff.
The blower is by far the most expensive component. While it is indeed true that I get a price break from Rotrex depending on the number of units sold, it's not that big of a discount. I was planning on doing something similar to what you have described, though.Just a thought, I'm not sure how you're planning on configuring the kit, but maybe set something up that doesn't include the actual supercharger. From a financing perspective, you won't be putting your cashflow into an inventory of actual blowers, you could just spec out the unit required. Then a group buy could potentially be set up with rotrex.
...it's likely that the largest expense would be the blower itself.
Also, the modifications I spoke of serve to enhance the durability of the supercharger, to promote even greater rideability and fuel consumption, and improve manufacturability. I have been riding this bike since August, and there have been zero hiccups with the engine or supercharger, just insane amounts of power (as in, punch it from a cruise in 3rd gear and directly control how much sky you see, for as long as you like, by the twisting of your right hand).
I want this to be the highest quality kit possible, without any bugs, hassles, or problems for the user. The refinements I am making now will hopefully meet this goal, along with making the entire kit easier to produce (and easier to upgrade :salesman:).
Oh it's coming. Basically, I've ironed out the parts of the kit that needed redesign, and I'm working on some cool features that will put this thing over the top, so just wait my friends - just wait. I can assure you that you will like what you see.eeerrrr... uummm... well?????? 5th gen kit please

I'm pretty sure a PowerCommander is a requirement for this setup, for various reasons:I know you are planning on a 98 + kit but I am hesitant about slapping on a kit designed for a 5th gen bike onto a VTEC setup. Will there be a 6th Gen test bike to make sure this will work? I am not the expert here but I do know that fuel mapping is VERY important in forced air setups.
- Bigger injectors
- Bigger fuel pump (as I recall)
- An airflow that the stock ECU map would probably have no calculation for
The biggest problem I see with the 6th-gen will be VTEC itself. Forced induction removes any of the so-called benefits of two-valves and better combustion swirl, so it would be best to switch the bike back to non-VTEC. This could be done either mechanically or electrically via a circuit which forces the oil solenoid on all the time. I'd prefer a mechanical solution personally, by replacing the VTEC valve componentry with the components (buckets & shims) from the other valves. Someone needs to make a project of it (until I have a spare bike, it's not likely to be me!).
The 6th-gen will have its very own kit developed for it. In no way, shape, or form will I try to just slap on a 5th-gen kit and market it for VTEC bikes. The success of this kit is attributed to thousandths of an inch (and in some cases, tenths) accuracy and I fully plan on obtaining a bike to design a kit around.
Many parts are the same, but far too many are different: obviously the fairing is changed, but did you know the throttle body is different? How about the valve covers? The frame is slightly tweaked and the big coils are gone. All this means that some of the parts I have already designed will need to be redesigned, though the majority of parts will interchange.
A Power Commander is an absolute necessity. If you do not already own one, you will have to buy one to use this kit. Also, I'm really not too concerned about VTEC. Remember this, for the majority of the time spent riding your bike (and especially while cruising), the engine sees only vacuum, thus the standard tune is only slightly modified to work with the supercharger. In the same way that tuning can smooth out the VTEC transition, so can tuning help nullify the VTEC effect with the blower.
With the purchase of a kit, a customer will receive a fuel map 90% optimized for their bike. Much like the predetermined fuel maps that come with a Power Commander, the fuel map I provide will be solid enough that further tuning is really more of an option. These fuel maps are tuned with real-world miles, not just strapped down to a dyno in a closed room. To do this, an actual 6th-gen bike will be used to fine-tune the fuel mapping and make sure that a bike with one of my kits will perform out of the box.
All this will come after I introduce the 5th-gen kit, however, but it should not be long after that.
Toro, I read recently that CBR1100XX injectors could be used. Did you look into this?
HP of the XX was 137 from the factory, seems close to what you are putting out.
Rob, the Blackbird injectors would be perfect for this application. The problem is that I can't get them at a realistic price unless I buy vast quantities of them directly from Keihin (basically acting as an OEM). I've figured out a great solution for the Stage 1 kit, and have a good idea of how to fuel the Stage 2 kit as well.
Now, if anyone has a connection/stockpile of Blackbird/S2000 injectors, we need to talk...

I puchesd a supercharger kit form calisuperbikes.com for my zx10r. haveing vary hard time getting all of the parts from them my concern would be the crank outrigger ,and pully. I have the rotex part and bullshit airbox no bov ,fuel pump or drive belt. The rotex unit has a 70mm 7 rib pully. The zx10 crank cover and bering looks to be right, but the crank outrigger is to narrow for the opening in the bering . Maybe this outrigger belongs to dif type bike. DO NOT BUY FROM CALISUPERBIKES, memeber on gixxer.com had some issues with jason at calisuperbikes. I found out after my deal. if youl could help let me know thanks.

Holy WOW! So I've been away from the forum for a while and this is what happens when I'm gone!!! TORO how do I get on the list? 2004 VFR waiting for a Torosupercharger.... and the owner is a little stoked at the idea too. Has a price point been discussed? Time line for manufacturing? Let me know if you need my personal info to secure a kit.
Price point: Unsure of that right now (if I have to ballpark it, plan on price landing somewhere between $4-6k, with a possible discount for the initial run of kits)
Timeframe: I hope to have my bike up and running & the first 'experimental' kit out within the next 1-2 months -- production 5th-gen kits will follow shortly after that, and once I can get my hands on a 6th-gen, that kit will follow as well.
Just keep you eyes peeled here for more info regarding progress/pricing. This is going to be the ultimate bolt-on you can purchase for your VFR.
I'd like to try this sometime. Not just the huffer, but the having to much time and money on my hands part, too!

I could make this kit cheaper by outsourcing parts to China, but I personally don't believe in doing that and very much like to support the local shops. I can guarantee that you will never once have to worry about the quality of this kit, and I have invested far too many engineering hours for it to be anything but perfect.
Just remember that you get what you pay for, and in this case, that means a 50% power boost.

I was planning on $4500 - $5000. $6,000 seems high, but if that's what it costs for a high quality kit, I'm not complaining.

I had similar thoughts. My bike is past 60,000 miles, and probably worth quite a bit less than the kit price.

08 Busa: 485/172=2.82 Horses per pound.
01 VFR Torque 458.6/60=7.64
08 Busa Torque 485/102=4.75

The development period has been extended due to forces out of my control. While the kit has been completely designed & engineered, I'm still awaiting key components needed to get the bike running again. It's always been my intent to update progress once I had enough to show you all, and I still intend to do just that, so stay patient.
In terms of power, I don't want to stick my foot in my mouth here, but I expect the updated kit to put down an honest 150hp at the wheel (depending on exhaust choice & dyno, of course). Brandon, the Busa will kill this bike in the torque department, but the power-to-weight ratio should be quite close. In the real world, the bike never feels underpowered. Even lugging it in 6th gear, it feels like it's a gear down and power is at the ready. It will instantly loft the front wheel from any rpm in 2nd gear, and comes up with ease in 3rd (granted, I do have steeper than stock gearing, but I could never do the things I can do now with the stock setup).
John, the beefier clutch springs have been installed, and while the lever pull is tougher than stock, it's not too bad. I can't report yet on how much better it performs with them installed, though.
Nymbyss, believe me, I was not trying to pull a wheelie in that video as my camera was precariously mounted. Nevertheless, the huge bump in power caused the front end to rise like it did. Oh, and my speedometer has been calibrated with the speedohealer, so what you see is not fudged by gearing. The acceleration is so much fun to experience since the boost never stops building -- where with the stock setup the power plateaus and falls off, the supercharged setup gives the sensation of neverending power. It's addicting.
I really hope to have some nice new pictures to show in the upcoming weeks, so until then, everybody have fun riding (because I know I won't be...(IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) )

strength... this beautiful machined aluminum piece looks crank prone to me in that junction...
This thread has gone on for so long it has become boring. There has been good solid innovation when something new is posted then another long delay before the next installment. Gets to the road-going prototype then the longest delay of all. I could not imagine what was taking so long since it all seemed just fine. Since it was mainly cnc all Toro needed to do was stick in another chunc of ally, register the job center & press Go to make more. Then he teased us with a photo of the intercooler.
Now he shows those exquisite plenums. I do a bit of cnc occasionally and appreciate the workmanship. Those chamfers on the edges are a ballache to do but it makes the job stand out. Exquisite work there Toro but get this thing done already.
Don't agree with BLS. You have cut out unfunctional material around the neutral axis. Have to acknowledge that vibration induced cracking may develop.

That's 0.500" thick 7075, with generous corner radii. If that bracket cracks, then something has gone incredibly wrong.
BeckWow! fantastic machining. those parts look great and robust. I was wondering whether you considered using CF/Composite for some of these, like the intake lower box you show here. Would it come out cheaper than doing this all in machined aluminum billet? There seems to be a lot of machining labor time and material with those bigger/more complicated billet parts.Beck

Believe it or not Beck, it is still cheaper to machine those parts out of aluminum than it is out of CF/composite or to have it cast, unless of course I start selling vast quantities. Plus, who said I wasn't making certain parts out of carbon fiber?...

John, that plenum was designed for both "stages" as it can accept an intercooler or simply the intake hat. I had to do quite a bit of design work to figure out an airbox that would perform a double function like that, but I think it's going to work out great. Plus, it will let an existing customer in the field upgrade their kit, if they ever want to, without having to buy different parts.

Sorry to disappoint, Ralph. I still have to work in order to afford this development, thus my time is stretched thin. Plus, every part (and I mean every single part) of the first prototype has been redesigned for this kit. I refuse to offer a subpar product to anyone, and that meant tweaking of what I had already done.
Again, that cut-out portion of the bracket has the same bending resistance as the lower portion of the bracket and even greater torsional rigidity. I can't forsee it ever becoming a problem as it is already over-engineered.
Also, as far as the ETA for the kits is concerned, wait until I get the bike running again. I hate making promises I can't keep...
WackenSSI was wondering about this "FI" suddenly showing up! Did you get it sorted ot? do you know where the bug was? How about Sprockets for this kit, wil there be bigger front sprocket included in the kit?
Oh yeah, that was sorted a while ago. The light came on due to the MAP sensor seeing positive pressure (that is, boost). No sprocket change necessary, though I currently run the bike with -1 front/+2 rear, which makes the front end very light, very often. :goofy:

Well, no one has really committed to anything yet. I just saw demand coming from all over the place and thought I'd give it a shot. Despite having an excellent hp/$ ratio, it's not going to be a cheap kit, but then again, you get what you pay for. The 5th-gen was developed first as that is the bike I own, but there is obviously more business in the 6th-gen marketplace.
I look at this upgrade in the following manner: if you love your bike (like I do) -- the way it rides, the comfort it has, the uniqueness that comes with having a V4, gear driven cams (or VTEC), & a single sided swingarm, the exhaust note to die for -- and find yourself wanting the power that the current big boys have, this is the best, most affordable route to go. Even with a good trade-in or sale price, adding a supercharger to your current ride is still cheaper than buying new or slightly used, and you get to keep the bike you know and love.
Obviously this is not a mod for everyone, as quite a few riders are more than happy with their bike's performance. Rather, this is for the riders who want something different, something more. It will not net you better fuel mileage, it will not improve your handling, and it will not transform your VFR into a GP bike, but it will put the biggest, stupidest grin on your face every time you twist the throttle, and that, to me, is what it's all about.

Wouldnt the air flow from the engine be able to still rotate the blades. Just like how wind going through fan blades (thats turned off).
Yes, you could run it without the belt attached. The outlet of the supercharger has 1.5" ID hole, and it can pull air past the impeller blades. If you really wanted to bypass the blower, you can always just unhook the tubing from the outlet, too. The question now becomes, why?
The way this system is set-up, while cruising or under part throttle conditions, it's just like having a stock bike as the boost is bypassed and there's virtually no parasitic load from the supercharger. In other words, ride it normal and it will get the same fuel mileage as stock.
In the past, the big roots blowers and earlier centrifugals didn't run any type of bypass, so essentially they were always compressing air and doing work (and sapping power from the engine). With the bypass, the impeller spins in a vacuum, doing no work, thus the power required to keep the roller-friction gearbox and small impeller spinning is minimal to say the least.
BlueFireIceIt's not like a fan, its an impeller of a centrifugal pump, there is not that much area for the air to pass through as it works off of pressure (boost). IF the bike did run it would not be very well....At all. And the engine, no matter how hard it could "suck" would ever turn the impeller on a supercharger, as they can easily have an impeller speed of 50,000RPM.
I too highly doubt the impeller would turn, and remember, this unit spins to 150,000 RPM! If the bike was run without the blower and nothing else changed, the mapping would be off and it certainly wouldn't be more efficient than running the supercharger at all times.

This isn't a $100 farkle, we're in the price range of buying a whole new bike...I'm really interested but honestly, buying a $5K add-on to a 10 year old bike doesn't make much $ense to me. A 6th gen kit would seem a lot more marketable in the long run.
Ooooo, Yeah let's all run out and buy a bike that we don't like don't want and already feel is much less than our 8-10 year old bikes.
Then lets all spend even more of our hard earned cash on a performance product that will make it faster but still won't address the big three problems.
If I could not have the supercharger for my 01, it would not be the end of the world. To be sure there are other bikes in the world that tempt me all the time, but not a 6th gen.
No 6th gen will ever disgrace my garage.

I have just finished my own Supercharger project on a 2005 GSXR1000. Toro gave me some great advice and offered to help me where ever he could. I bought a CaliSuperbikes kit, got ripped off. he is a conartist... among other things. anyway back on track... it is a Rotrex Blower that has been designed from the ground up just like Toro did. Now its sporting an Intercooler attached to a new plenum, bigger injectors, PC3, Ignition module, Multi hub for boost monitoring, LCD screen. we reshaped the headers to allow a propper Air intake and ceramic coated the pipe to prevent the heat from the Headers. I just got it back from the Headers guy and rode it last night for about an hour, but in Traffic. It is terrifying to say the least. it goes in for Dyno tuning on Friday July 4th (not a holiday in Canada). It had 198hp before we redesigned the whole thing with the intercooler and propper intake. We think a realistic 215-225hp at 3400 ft elevation in Calgary Alberta Canada. I also wanted to say my finished product is no where near the fit and finish of Toro's. his is a work of art !

Its sporting the PC3 with a Multi Hub hooked into a GM3 bar Map, and Ignition Module. Wideband Commander to go in soon with LCD interface.
This dyno was done with Ignition retarding quite heavily, the tuner was scared to dyno it, he didnt have much experience with a Blower. So it is extremely rich and ignition retarded till we could finish the redesign. I will post new pics and the new Dyno after Friday the 4th.

Yes i beleive it is the C15-60. Thanks so much for helping out with advice. Its really good of you to take the time to help us out. Yeah,maybe one day i will catch up with Jason Keats. he even scammed a guy a complete bike, that guy pressed charges i heard. might be why the website is now down. Man that guy could sure sell. what got me was that articale in Super Streetbike magazine. I was like, well he made it into a magazine he has to be trustworthy and must have a good product..... umm no.
Once again i would have never got it done without your advice and a couple local turbo guys.
Okay, if you find out that you can't pull any more power out of your bike, it's probably time to upgrade the supercharger to a C30 series. The blower is beyond its limit, as can be seen from the dyno graph where it maxes out at 11,500. Even if you keep the same boost ratio, just by stepping up to the C30-74 you'll see substantial power increases due to much increased efficiency and breathing room of the supercharger, and should put peak power somewhere in the 230-240 range, and peak boost just under 9psi. If you choose to increase the boost to say, 12psi max, then the power jumps to over 260, maybe even approaching 275 under the right conditions. Whoa mama.

Ok here is some pics of the Second Gen design, we did lots of work customizing the fairings to fit. It now looks like a stock bike almost.... except the blower area had to be cut out. So i am gonna need dome custom fiberglass work.
here is the headers reshaped and moved over so we could get a propper intake on it, run over to the other side for cool fresh air.

I have come across a problem though. as the wheel lifts into the air, which it does quite a bit now. I found out that the Blue cap on the Oil resevoir no matter how tight you have it, is not sealed. it is a breather cap, so oil likes to flow over everything..lol. yeah bike was smoking all of a sudden, I got off and went "uh oh this is gonna be expensive" ! but it turned out to be the traction fluid. So we are gonna need a machined cap that is sealed with a nipple in the top, attach a breather line and run that to a higher point, maybe up front with dash or something. If you can come up with a cap, i will for sure wire you money for one. I have lost my machining contact. lol.

As for the breather cap, even though I oftentimes also have a "light" front end, I never have oil come out. You need no more than for the reservoir to be half full -- is your filled more than that? If so, take some of that fluid out of there and see how it works.

It's just that the basic understanding as to why I NEED this sort of a mod is way beyond her capability to understand.

Yeah, those type of books I'd like to get for my birthday, or maybe Christmas? Oh yeah, did I mention that she is allowed to do absolutely anything on the planet that isn't illegal or immoral? Just that she doesn't choose to do (insert activity here). Not my fault. :shrugs:

Well after custom tuning, which was delayed by a faulty fuel pump. I drove 350kms with no fuel pressure, lucky i had laptop and i richened it up huge. So with big 35lb injectors and me adjusting it, i hobbled into town at about 110kmh. Max speed. lol. So he spent day diagnosing instead of tuning, and said fuel pump bad. So mechanic found me a 50PSI pump replaced it for me. he then removed the Secondary Butterflies and proceeded to tune it. Now new problem came up. there was no reason to have big injectors stock ones would have flown enough fuel with only 6-8psi, he said you can squish the stock regulator, and they would probly be fine. I think because a GSXR1000 has 2 sets of injectors and the Shower ones only come on at the top 25%. So the stock would have been fine. oh well. So it is runing like ass in the bottom end, and kinda surges. But oh my god does it have power. 4th 5th 6th feel like 3rd gear. the accelleration is nuts. It put down about 205hp. Mechanic said its got another 15hp or so, but he said to keep it rich for safety. I have no problem with that, its more power than i can handle anyway. I will post the dyno sheet soon. Mechanic is a skilled Tuner with Boost and just Motor mods. James works for Walt Healy's in Calgary AB, and is the crewchief for Ethan Barkley a Champion Drag racer up here in Canada. they are running a 400+hp GSXR1000. its pretty insane. EBSPEED.com.

He needed the time to sort out the gremlins not only in the hardware department but the other side being paperwork, shipping schedules, patents, blue prints etc, which would leave us to find that parts are not up to the job or the BHP rating is much lower than predicted. It takes time to create a great malt. Dan has spent the last 2+ years of his life designing and testing this project to create not just another bolt on blower but a methodically engineered work of art. It takes a person with great vision, skill and determination to pull off such an idea as this originally was.
The positive blogs from all you guys have been great to read and will only inspire him to keep on perfecting the kit to a point when he has reached perfection and we will all reap in the bountiful rewards. So, keep taking the patience pills a little while longer and really look forward to the launch.

I don't think that there should be that many adjustments for VTEC as there are many boosted Honda civics out there with VTEC.

VTEC on Civics is completely different than on the bikes. The way the VTEC kicks in on a 6th gen radically changes breathing. Therefore any SC kit will have to be tuned accordingly. Dyno tuning 100% required.

I have no doubt your right, but the VTEC on the bike isn't all that different from the cars. It's actually a simplier system, but you should look at this video. If you have ridden a sixth gen it may sound familiar.

Knowing what little I know about the US patent office, just that alone could take some serious time. Although, I know hearing that would probably rest the worried minds.
I'm very patient in my interest, since I have 147 other projects moneypits to tackle before I think about hoping for a ToroCharger for my 6th gen.

Having said that I cant wait till the reports start coming back from people who have bought it.
Also I dont think anyone buying one will in the long term lose out. Why? Think about it, how much publicity has this had and with such a small possible customer base it had to have as much as possible. Now there are people , who like me, would like this option but cant accept the cost for whatever reason, private jet already costs too much in fuel haha.

thought it was very well done via photos and text. Alot of us can look at something in our dreams and imagine it and thats where it starts and stops. You took this from its inception and
stayed with it until completion. Its very easy to get board with any project, no matter how interesting,so again credit is due for not loosing site. You have made all interested VFR'ers
proud. One question that I would like to ask,what effect do you think your system will have on long term reliability? I know you will have to answer this hypothetically, but just wondered

In the end there is added stress to the system due to compression and heat. All things being equal there will be added wear and tear due to this. Toro has made sure the super charger for the VFR is made of quality parts and design (with extensive field testing I am sure http://www.vfrdiscus...tyle_emoticons/default/wink.gif) and having an experienced mechanic installation will greatly increase over all performance and longevity.
The largest factor by far for longevity is as I have pointed out: the driver.
Dang I am in love...and I am not usually a Supercharged person. What a nice kit, very well done! Now to talk the wife into a 5th gen with a supercharger....
Edit: How you are going to find room for all of this with the ABS models is going to be an engineering feat by itself. :goofy:

Worth every penny compared to other FI applications from what I have seen. Looks like a straight forward install and the only part you would need a 3rd party for is the dyno tuning (always a must if you take FI seriously). Not to mention the sleeper effect. Nice website too. May I suggest either having the install manual available for download or a more in depth section on the site to give potential buyers a better understanding of how much work is involved; something like this thread maybe. I think most folks would be more comfortable and confident in purchasing if they had that info easily at hand.

Okay, I expect some of you guys to step up and buy this sucker. So many of you have said that the 5th gen is the perfect bike but it just needs more power. Many others have said, "Where's the 7th gen with 1000cc's?" Well this will eat up any 7th gen that Honda will (probably not) produce. Can't find a nice 5th gen? Unf, I just bought $11,000 + of my company's stock today inside my RRSP. Not nearly as fun as a supercharger though.
It's at a 52 week low, $6.32 per share, so I think that's a good buy, and it helps me offset my capital gains for 2008 as today is the last day for RRSP contributions to apply against 2008 earnings.

I know the 6th-gen guys are wondering when their kit will arrive -- it's coming. I need to get the 5th-gen kits up and going first, and then the 6th-gen will come in and we'll adapt a kit to it. The bikes are very similar so it shouldn't take too long to make the necessary changes. If you are a 6th-gen owner in the PA area and would like to be a guinea pig, let me know.
Rob, the intercooler idea is still alive (the kit was indeed designed for it), but yes, there is not much room and it is a plumbing nightmare. The biggest drawback is the expense; that is, how many people would be willing to spend an extra $1k-$1.5k for a 10-15hp increase when the kit already puts out 160whp? If that answer is quite a few people, then I'll put it into production. It really does run quite nicely though on regular pump gas, and if extended boost situations arise (racing, long dyno sessions), then some octane boost or a little racing gas will prevent any detonation/pre-ignition from occurring.Whatever became of the intercooler idea? Basically I am thinking 50-60 hp would be too much for what I need. Yes, I want one but I don't do wheelies or race squids. I just want my bike to accelerate like my R6 used to as it always made me smile. For her weight I think 20-30 hp would be more than enough. Just curious mind you. I know that would probably mean a new pulley or even a smaller SC but since you haven't started on the 6th gens yet I figured I would ask. :fing02:
