Reason, the 954 shock has a remote oil reservoir that makes the oil last longer and regulates heat better, also the shock is fully adjustable. The vfr stock shock only has rebound adjustment and not compression, also it does not have a remote oil reservoir.

OK, never one to let fear and good judgment stand in my way, here we go:

Need to extend the VFR upper shock bracket approximately 42mm, so I got a 1/2" extra-heavy pipe collar, shortened it to suit like this:

It was bolted together in preparation for welding.

An M10x120mm bolt was needed to hold the modified mount in place. You'll note the washer, trimmed to clear the frame cross member. This is because I didn't want the pipe collar bearing directly against the aluminum frame, I wanted to spread the load over a larger area, hence the washer. Plus, I deliberately cut the collar a tad short so I could make up more ride height as required, limited by the lower dog bone/shock eye clearance issue. I found I'll need at least two more washers added:

I wound up shortening the bolt to 114mm, cleaned up the end threads with a die plus I ground down the bolt head to .175" (for adequate clearance of the upper shock eye) which is still thicker than the stock VFR mount bolt head was. Also used a Nylock nut to keep things attached.

Reinstall modded upper mount, bolt shock into place:

Voilà! Shock install complete! Actually, I still need to add another couple of shims. Ride height is not quite where I want it.

I had originally done Ver 1.0 of the upper mount:

But I decided it wasn't beefy enough, only 3mm wall thickness, and the OE shock bracket is 5mm.

So I fabbed Ver 2.0, but there's a wiring harness right there, and I was concerned about rubbing with the square tubing:

So ultimately I went with Ver. 3.0 which has 6mm wall thickness and no possibility of rubbing on the wiring harness:

The 2 differences in the 954 and 929 shocks are: spring rate and location of the gas canister. I used a 954 and changed it out for the 929. I only weight 140 lbs. The spring rate wasn't a problem. The 929 canister is farther away from the exhaust pipe. I felt more comfortable about that. The tech at Penske said that the oil temp in the shock is more controlled by the usage of the shock rather than it's environment. Either works fine.

VFR2XNice write up, very well informed. Question didn't the 54 shock resivoir get in the way? must not have or you would have said something. also this is on your VFR right?? Hmm wonder what is different between yours and a 4G? still a good job explaining.

Well, the reservior is sort of close to the exhaust system, like slightly less than an inch.

If you rotate it, there's interference between the plastic undertray and the reservoir, plus the damping adjuster screws would then face the wrong way and be obscured.

I thought about spinning the shock, but the part of the plastic undertray that interferes is a shield for the main wiring harness to/from the rear of the bike (ECU, etc) and I didn't feel comfortable cutting that away. Also there's a mount for a fuse ahead of the battery that sprouts off that plastic and you'd lose that too if you cut it away to make clearance for the reservoir.

ULEWZVery nice. I wonder if the spring is heavy enough as the 954 weighs about 100 lbs less then the VFR.

All in all, on a 5th gen, a 929 shock would probably be a better choice, fitment wise and spring rate wise. 929=15.3kg/mm, same as the VFR, 954 = 14.6kg/mm

As for the 4th gen, I can't say. Probably possible, but somebody else will have to chime in.

For my spacer, I just used a piece of 1" aluminum 6 sided bar stock(solid) and drilled a hole in it for the bolt. Light, strong, easy.

rmcobbIf a guy was going to get the 929 or 954 shock resprung and revalved, is the 929 still a better way to go than the 954......or does it matter?

From what I've been picking up, it seems that the 929 is easier to fit??

I thought I could find a way around it, and 954 shocks are newer, with the possibility of finding a mint one easier, so I got one, but there isn't an easy solution to the reservoir interference without cutting the undertray. Even then, the adjuster screws would face the wrong way and be obstructed.

But yea, 929 is a better fit physically and spring rate wise.

FotoMotoYou can back off the pre-load, place the top end in a vice or somehow restrain it, thread a screwdriver though the eyelet of the bottom end, and rotate the bottom 180.

The problem still remains that either the 954 shock reservoir will reside close to the rear cylinder's exhaust pipes if faced to the right, or interfere with the plastic undertray ahead of the battery if faced to the left. I thought about facing it rearward by rotating the upper shock mount, but that puts the compression damping adjuster screw facing the aft cylinder head.

And rotating the lower shock eye only moves the rebound damping adjustment screw, not the compression damping adjustment screw which is located at the top.

None of these problems exist with the 929 shock. So I'm switching to the 929 unit as soon as it arrives. Good thing they're cheap and plentiful. 26 bucks!

Dr. Toto made the call on the 954 shock interference and I thought I could carve out a way around it, but not without making compromises I didn't feel comfortable with. The interference between the reservoir and the undertray when faced to the left is greater than 1/2", maybe closer to 3/4"

I am planning on doing this mod over the winter. I have been thinking of making an adjustable spacer. What do you think?

The outside dimension is 25mm across the flats. The small hole is 10mm threaded to fit the bracket mounting bolt. The Large hole is 18mm threaded to provide the adjustabe length. Minimum length is 30mm. Maximum is approximately 42mm with the half of the threaded portion inside. My first choice for material is aluminum since it would be easy to machine. Not sure if it would strong enough.

What do you think?

So, I went out and installed the 929 shock in place of the 954 unit today.

I feel somewhat better about having the correct spring rate, (15.3kg/mm Vs 14.6) and a lot better about how the reservoir is not so close to the exhaust system anymore. Good thing EBAY CBR shocks are cheep!

What I did discover was that the 929 shock is approximately 4mm longer than the 954 shock. At least the Erion 929 unit is. (The one with the white spring Vs. yellow)

I slid the shock home without tightening up any of the bolts and checked the unweighted ride height with the longer shock and modded upper mount. I had wanted to increase it further after the initial install of the 954 shock, so with the longer unit, it seemed prudent to check first.

I wound up with 12mm more ride height as compared to stock but I figured I could still obtain a tad more yet, so I removed the shock and upper mount again and added a second washer in addition to the one shown in this pic:

The second washer all by itself gave me approximately 3mm more ride height.

Glad now that I made the modded upper mount on the short side to begin with.

There isn't really any easy way to increase it further, I could possibly slide in 1 more washer without having the lower shock eye contact the dogbone, but the forward mounting bolt of my hugger would contact the inside surface of the LH peg bracket. I could remove the peg bracket and relieve it in that spot, but it didn't seem important enough to try. Also, with a new rear tire and full tread, the rear tire will probably be either only a couple mm off of or maybe even lightly resting on the ground with the bike on the centerstand anyway. Can't go much more than that in any practical sense.

SO, after all is said and done, I've got 15mm more rear ride height than stock and 11mm less ride height in the front. Mind you, this is completely based on unweighted measurements IE: wheels totally off the ground in each case, measuring from the axle to a reference point on the frame.

This should nullify the effects of the greater trail from the RC51/954 triple clamps and once I get a fresh rear tire it should steer as quick as or quicker than stock.

BarmyWonder if I might ask a couple questions, since I now have time to work on the VFR. Mine ('98 purchased in september) is purported to have been computracked and modded. I do think my rear is higher, and it has an Ohlin shock. Apparently, the dogbone and lower bracket are off a 929 which some suspension guru did.

Did you use the other components, or just the shock?

Are there a part numbers stamped on the components that allow me to verify the orignal application?

Lastly, is the purpose of your mod simply to gain a more efficient shock, or are you "tweaking" things for handling?

The shock is off an Erion edition 929, the triangle linkage and dogbone are standard VFR800 items.

The 929 coincedentally has the same spring rate as the VFR, 15.3 kg/mm

The reason for the shock install is to complement the front end which has been swapped out for RC51 forks and brakes.

The 929 shock is 3-way adjustable and has the same stroke length as the VFR shock.

So I gain compression damping adjustment and an external reservoir.

I'd surely like an Ohlins or HyperPro or WP shock, but this rear shock is a real bargain compared to an aftermarket unit.

Maybe eventually if I find a used shock in good shape I'll pick it up, but I didn't have a grand for Ohlins or even 500 for a HyperPro. Translate that from USD to Cdn and it's $$$ quick.

And raising the rear ride height is to compensate for the increased trail due to fitting the RC51/CBR954 triple clamps.

Actually, i'm calling it a GL800RR-SP2 now. :wheel:

GL = Goldwing for the touring mods

800 = obvious

RR = for the performance mods

SP2 = for the RC51 forks

Hope you enjoy the smoothness of the VFR. I rode passenger on a BMW Boxer once and I'm not sure how anyone could stand the vibration. I figured an opposed motor would be smooth, but I guess it needs to be a 4 or a 6 like the 'wing or a Volkswagen or a Subaru.

Yes it is shorter, but has almost identical shock stoke length. IIRC, 57mm Vs 58mm

It's shorter because of the design on the shock, Internal reservior for the VFR Vs external reservior for the CBR.

The longer upper shock mount takes care of the difference in length.

First off, the '99 VFR shock spring rate is 15.3kg/mm, the 929 is coincidentally, exactly the same.

2002 GSXR1000 is only 7.7 kg/mm.

So right off the hop, your spring is like half as stiff as it needs to be.

Need: new spring. And revalving to suit said spring.

Length: GSXR shock = 329mm, which is longer than a VFR800 shock by 4mm. Probably would fit and raise the rear of the bike by approx. 10mm overall with the stock upper shock mount. This is a good thing in and of itself.

Shock stroke length, GSXR= 74mm Vs VFR800 which is only 58mm.

So you'd have waay too much wheel travel and the swingarm would extend upwards too much at full compression. Like an extra inch and a half more upwards travel. 6.6" Vs 5.1" Not good.

The only way I could see it working is to respring the shock, revalve it for the new twice as stiff spring, and fit some sort of internal stop to limit the shock's travel to 58mm of stroke.

Probably it's doable by a professional suspension shop like Racetech, Aftershocks, Lindemann, Traxxion, etc, but by the time you did all that, you could buy an aftermarket shock and be off riding.

Is there significant improvement in feel and control?

Well, the ride is certainly more "taut" for lack of a better description.

I still haven't foodled with all the adjustments yet. I've only been through one tank of fuel so far this year.

I've basically got the 929 shock set at the factory default settings (for a 929 that is).

When I get some more time, I'll mess with it more. But I have absolutely no idea when I'll have more time. :beer:

Rob, thanks for your great write-up! I was inspired by reading it and decided for this season to upgrade to a 929 strut.

My parts list:

'00 929RR Erion Edition shock ($21 shipped from *bay)

1/2" x 4" galvanized steel plumbing pipe ($3 from Lowes)

M10 x 1.50 x 110mm bolt ($2.75 from local supplier)

3 steel washers ($0.48 from Lowes)

M10 x 1.50 lock nut ($1.45 for two pack from Lowes)

2 1/4" alternator spacer from '64-'76 V8 Mopar (on hand)

Hint: if you can find a M10 x 1.25 x 110mm bolt, you could use the the stock lock nut, which has a metal lock instead of nylon. They were out of stock locally...

Pulling the stocker was a snap thanks to jacking up the swing arm!

Getting the tack welded bolt off the VFR mount was a b*tch. I used an air saw then the Chevy tool (32oz hammer) with the mount in a vice to encourage the welds to let go. Here's what came out:

After measuring and re-measuring, I cut my spacer pipe to ~37mm (1.455" according to the dial caliper). With the reservoir barely touching the undertail, rear height is up ~12mm. My 3 stack of washers measured 0.241" for a total additional spacing of ~43mm (1.696") from stock.

Here is the mount before priming and paint:

And here's the alternator spacer inside the pipe. It pressed in easily with the vice:

The shock will slip into place with the new spacer/mount already attached (don't torque fully until it is in place).

Riding Impressions

This is a whole nuther bike. Everything feels more stable: in the turns, over rough road, putting power to the ground. I feel like I'm riding slow because of the difference from stock.

I've ridden a buddy's track prepped '01 R1 quite a bit. It has an Ohlins. I would say the 929 rear suspension setup on my VFR is equally confidence inspiring.

Of course, now the front suspension's limitations seem even more pronounced. I can only imagine the handling prowess and stopping power of an RC51 fork/brake swap. Hoping to at least go Race Tech springs/valves with F3 cartridge meld.

I would suggest this update to anybody not timid of the detailed steps. Even if you don't have access to a welder, you can measure everything and have a local shop weld the spacer in place.

Also, I checked the price on the upper mount ($9.89) just in case I needed to fall back to the stocker. Might be a good backup for anybody on the fence:

WTF? I've got mine all fabbed up and am trying to install, but the only way it fits puts the adjustment screws to the RIGHT side of the bike where it is rather difficult to get at them. Been scouring the site for a pic of one installed, and all I've come up with is this one from Rob:

But I think that is a 954 shock from the way I read it. What am I missing here?!?!?! I haven't ridden in six months, I NEED to get this back together!!!

Edit: here is my shock, from what I've read I believe it's a 929 item. Perhaps I am mistaken?

Don't know how helpful this is going to be seeing as how my bike is in pieces at the moment.

I guess you can see the shock really well, but nothing else.

Maybe the interference with the plastic undertray you are experiencing is not a problem for me because of my underseat exhaust?

I cut and modified the plastic battery box and rotated it forward as much as possible for the exhaust project.

Oh, and the shock in the first pics in this thread IS a 954 shock, the one with the yellow spring and gold reservoir.

The later shock with the white spring and the black reservoir is an Erion edition 929 shock.

Yours is a 929 shock based on the reservoir design, spring colour be damned.

Compatible as in mounting points, length and travel. Spring is not a big issue as it can be replaced quite easily.

i just put an f4i shock on mine. .5" shorter, so you simply add washers or spacer, but standard mount worked great. upgraded my spring and had it revalved. shock was ~$20-30 OFF ebay and the spring was $100 and the revalve was $150...so $300 and i practically have a new show w/ reservoir and compression adj.

mechdziner714I am looking to do the 929 shock upgrade to my 5th gen soon. Is there a particular model year 929 shock needed. I was also wondering if pre-load adjustments are still easy, as they are w/ the 5th stocker? Would it be worthwhile to have it revalved/rebuilt before installing. My guess is its easy enough to remove and have re-worked if it turns out the one I get from fleabay is worn out.

The 929's were only made in 00-01 models and standard one's had a yellow spring and Erion models had white springs. Stock they have the SAME spring rate as the VFR so other than spacing it's a straight bolt in w/o mods. Most people want/need a heavier spring on the VFR so that would also apply to the CBR shock on the VFR, but you can sure run it untill you plan to upgrade the rest of the suspension w/o issue! :thumbsup:

Someone here did use a 954 shock too if I'm not mistaken, but the 929 is the easiest mod for the 5th gen.

admw12I have a 2004 and neither the 929 nor the 954 shock will fit either way( facing left or right) and keep the same ride height. I made a spacer the length of the difference between the stock shock and the 954/929, well the res on the 954 hits the engine, and the 929 hits a hard line ( hydralic probably). So now I have to buy a longer bolt and make a longer spacer. This however will change my ride geometry and change the handling of the bike. Something I wish I didn't have to do. Anyhow, anyone have any other suggestions ( rather than buying a $1000 shock).

I am jumping in late to this thread but am interested in the 929 swap. Is the main advantage of the 929 shock that it has both compression and rebound damping? I also have an almost new CBR1100XX shock, but that looks like the VFR shock-only rebound damping. I also looked at the F4i shocks but it sounds like they need new springs and valves even though they have a remote reservoir. Any advantage to those over the 929, other than the length being closer to the VFR?

Has any of VFRD's master fabricators gone into the business of making up 929 shock adapter kits for us less gifted members? I am sure there is a market for such a item.


from what rob posted earlier, the 954 shock is not a good option. be advised the 929 install will require some trimming of the battery box. i made several spacers of different length from 1" steel round stock. i have since decided, even painted they would start to rust. (yuk) i bought a length of 1" square bar stock of 6061 aluminum. part is much better (not perfect but i'm trying). the most critical part is the top mount hanger. the 10mm bolt has to be removed and replaced with 120mm length, welded into place. and then the bolt head has to be ground down about half its height. the stock hanger costs $12.01 plus shipping from ron ayers. so they raw costs of parts for me is about $20. rob made his own for $2 ?. having a used hanger would save the $12 but how long would the bike be apart waiting mod. if your still interested, send me a PM

this post shall never die! too much good information. i've noticed lately some of these same questions keep coming up, so i decided to add a little more information. if a person has the ability to modifiy the mount for a 929 shock. i would suggest you make a new top bracket rather than use the old one. if you reuse the old one you must grind or cut the top half of the bolt head off for clearence of the top of the shock. this may NEVER be a problem, but i worry just the same. enco sells 1"x1/4"x36" ground flat bar for $22.22. you could still have the 929 shock bought and mounted under $100. your not going to beat that deal!!!! :wheel:

Opus, I did not weld the bolt to the bracket.

I had to grind the bolt head thinner so it would clear the shock eye, then I installed the lengthened bracket into the frame, then bolted the shock to the bracket.

But I did not weld the bolt to the bracket. You could have that done, no reason why not.

I also kind of figured that out/assumed last night after talking with the welder husband of a friend's cousin. He's going to weld that up for me tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

I just finished this mod on my fourth gen. I followed this post almost exactly and it worked fine for the 96. The washer does not fit so it was left off. I made my extension 41.5 mm which is 2.5mm over stock. There is absolutly no room for anything longer, at least on a fourth gen bike. Huge improvement over stock!

Hi all! I've read through this thread a couple times and would like to do this mod over winter. I have a '99 VFR that is all stock as far as this mod is concerned. I do have a couple questions though:

929 questions
The 929 shock reservoir is nice and far from the exhaust, but does it require trimming the battery box? It sounds like yes; can anyone confirm, or perhaps tell me how much the battery box needs to be trimmed? I don't really feel like trimming my battery box.
Are the compression/rebound adjustment screws accessible when everything's installed?

954 questions
The 954 shock reservoir sits very close to the exhaust (less than an inch) but this might not be a real problem.

just installed a 929 shock last night and it was a breeze. I used a thick axle spacer for my extension and it was 45mm, so I left it as it was.

The only different things I have to add are:

* the 929 spring really isnt stiff enough, but will do for now (as BR stated) I had to wind up the pre-load 4/5ths of the way up just to get a baseline.

* I didnt have to trim anything on the undertray

* looks like 45mm is the limit before the bottom eye touches the linkage

* this is really the best modification for money/time vs results

* I did weld the bolt to the bracket ( to ensure that everything remains concentric)

the bike was instantly much better. Instantly familliar and confidence inspiring. sorta like when you take off trashed tyres and notice how good a new set feels, but times 10.

I havent set the shock up yet becaused I had a team of mechanics tapping their toes, waiting on me to finish so they could close up the shop and go home.

You must be heavier than Honda's test-riders, because the 929 spring rate is the same as the 5th gens.

I just purchased a 929 with a white spring (faster, and goes with my Erion slip on, lol) and I'm looking forward to doing this and seeing what difference I feel. I'm also at almost 45k miles on the stock shock... so with all this info and a decent price why not http://www.vfrdiscus...tyle_emoticons/default/smile.gif I do like the "plush" (most seem to argue undersprung) feeling of these bikes... but a bit more "bite" would be nice.

Timmy is this all you have done so far or have you put different springs in the front?

havent done the front yet, I,m waiting for thermosman to steer me in the definitave direction (and help with parts). prolly going to do the F3 cartridge swap with some good springs and fresh oil (obviously)

I am heavier than a honda test rider because those guys are about a buck o five wet and I am 220. Plus, who knows how old the spring was???

I just thought of something... The rear shock does not sit vertical. So if you measure the VFR shock, then measure the CBR shock, then add the difference to the _bracket_ rather than the _shock_ itself... your suspension geometry (namely, riding height) will be quite different from original.
Anybody got measurements and/or AutoCAD drawings of 4th gen rear suspension? Or do you just "add shims till it feels right"?

The VFR shock should be 325mm and the CBR929 one is 287mm for a difference of 38mm. That would make your bracket 63mm long. I'd even err to the side of more ride height and make thet bracket at least 65mm, maybe even longer.

Progress report... I bought a replacement bolt (100mm, which is 30mm longer than stock) and made the aluminum spacer (see the drawing below; unfortunately, it does not look as good in flesh - made with a hacksaw and a file instead of a milling machine). The 929 shock seems to fit, I will probably try to put it all together tomorrow.

More ride height helps on these bikes. I usually suggest at least 5mm but you can run up to 10mm if desired. It's about a 3:1 ratio of shock length to ride height. That means an increase of 5mm at the shock translates to 15mm at the axle.

Got to invest a little bit of my thumb on the spring...


Here is my install. I used a <gasp> 3/8" grade 8, 5" </gasp> bolt because there weren't any 110MM 10MM bolts and I didn't feel like a goose chase. I used a ground down steel spacer with washers at each end for the additional needed length. It's a tad long but didn't take much to get in. I have the compression/rebound adjusters at about a third from full soft and I guessed at the sag and am two clicks towards stiff on the spring collar. Interested to see how it does.

Another progress report...
The new shock is in place. The battery box was a pain to reinstall. The ignition coils did not fit (the oil reservoir occupies a part of their private space) and had to be relocated. I was going to take pictures, but I lost my camera somewhere. Oh well...

Are you sure that you have a 929 shock and not a 954 one? They are often mislabeled on eBay or labeled as fitting both (they don't). They only battery box interference problems I've seen have been with a 954 shock, the 929 should fit without any problems.

Yep, I have a 100% 929 shock. It does not interfere with the battery box, but _reinstalling_ the box (getting the metal heat shield between the shock and the fender) was a pain. Had to bend the shield, put it in place, then un-bend it.

When you were removing the 4th gen riginal shock, did you get any clearance problems? I'm fighting the removal of mine at the moment. I've removed the lower triangle plates, unbolted the top shock mount at the frame but it doesn't want to drop out, bottom shock eye hits the lower dog bone and won't go low enough to wriggle the shock out. Any ideas?

On most VFR's when trying to remove the rear shock you will find it much easier if you jack up the swing arm before trying to remove the shock, this gives you much more room to shift the shock around to get it out!

+1 on raising the swingarm with a jack. Since the linkage is unbolted and you are only lifting the swingarm and not the entire rear of the bike, not a lot of force is needed so even a helper with 2x4 placed underneath (the board not the helper!) the arm will leverage it up enough to give you more working room to remove the shock. A jack will be more precise during reinstallation tho'.

Also, leave the upper mount in place in the frame until later. Then remove it separately to do the lengthening mod on it.

+1 on lifting the swingarm. Here is an easy way to do it without a helper - a small $10 bottle jack from Harbor Freight. Absolutely essential tool when it's time to install your new shock and align the bolt holes.

I'm planning on tackling this project on my '98 before spring. I just won a bid on a shock ($25 plus $10 shipping and I was the only bidder, 8500 miles on it so I'm not going to do anything with it, just toss it in), with a white spring, so it should be the Erion if I read everything correctly.

I could form up (I run a press brake for a living) a bracket like CitizenOfDreams has posted up. It would be pretty easy to ship if ppl were interested in one of there own. To do so I need the dimensions of the stock mount, minus the bolt, and then also the overall length that is needed to accommodate the 929 shock. If no one has that info I will purchase one to measure, but I'd really appreciate the dimensions. It would save me time and some money. I'm really only interested in the 5th gen one, but if someone gives me the numbers I can make up one for a 4th gen as well. I'm looking at making the bracket just like CitizenOfDreams has pictured (maybe with a gusset between the legs tho, (those legs are 2.5" long) depends upon what kinda material thickness is there. Aluminum wouldn't be strong enough at that thickness, but I can certainly do steel or stainless steel, stronger than steel and won't rust. Then it would bolt up just like stock and you would be able to keep the stock mount in case you ever needed to return it to stock.

From what I read it looks like the 5th gen requires a 37mm to 45mm extra to accommodate the shock, but I need to know the stock mount dimensions to start with. The overall I'm looking for isn't just the bare minimum to run the shock, but also if say 5mm longer helps the handling by increasing the ride height I'd like to toss that in right away. I like learning from other peoples "mistakes" (trial and errors) Also, I guess, I could make them in several different lengths too.

Like I said, making 20 is just as easy as making 1.

As for me, my aluminum spacer seems to work fine. But somebody else may be interested in those brackets. The only issue that I see is liability. Should something go wrong, not necessarily because of a bracket failure... it could turn ugly on the road and even uglier in the court. One thing is posting your designs and ideas, entirely different thing is manufacturing safety-critical parts for someone else.

Does the VFR spanner wrench work on the 929 shock?? Ultimately that doesn't matter to me because my bike didn't have the tool kit with it when I purchased it, so I plan on making a spanner wrench. I haven't installed my 929 shock yet, so I have that to measure to make the spanner wrench. If any one wants I can make up a bunch of them, should fit in an envelope pretty easily.

It looks like by the pics that it is a straight shot in to get the spanner wrench on the shock. Is that the case or does it need to have a kink in it or any special requests?? Can someone with a stock spanner wrench tell me how long it is, just curious as I have nothing to work off of here.

If you are talking about the spanner that you use to adjust chain tension, then no. You need to buy (or otherwise procure) the CBR pin wrench (part number 89202-KY1-700, $11.28 at Honda Direct Line.) It's a fairly straight shot on my 4th gen, don't know about 5th.

Well I found this thread helpful, especially the pictures, so I thought I'd add a few of my own that might help others doing this swap.

I dug through my bin of "crap-I-thought-might-come-in-handy-someday" and found some aluminum bar, pre-drilled and with a set screw. I think it may have been part of a bicycle wind trainer but not sure. Whatever it is, it fit the bill perfectly. :laugh:

I cut down the spacer and ended up at 66mm eye to end. This should give a tad bit more ride height as Jamie suggested. On the left you can see how much of the old bolt had to be ground away before it could be tapped out.

I don't think there should be any concern for the upper shock mount rotating. There are no forces exerting on it to do so and as long as the mount is tight...

I thought about that....but I really don't think there are any twisting forces that would cause it to rotate. If it did it wouldn't go too far before being stopped by the battery box. If it's ever a problem I'll just drill the spacer for a small roll pin or similar to keep it in place. :biggrin:

I don't recall any difficucty setting mine, but I wasn't at the top of the preload range either.

Basically, once your preload is set, it's set.

Unless you fuss setting it for a short-hop passenger, each and every time.

Just to clarify my measurements, the 41.5mm measurement on my adapter corresponds to CitizenOfDreams' 36mm measurement.

I can easily whip some of these up if you guys want them - have lathe, mills and associated stuff at my home shop.
Cost wouldn't be much - just a few $ for shipping. I have enough aluminum scrap lying around to make a couple.

Could also make the round tubular style pretty easily if you'd rather have that style.

Hey Zach - thought I'd follow up on this...need to get the beast fixed up for an upcoming ride.

I know you have a stock bracket in hand, so I am 99% sure you need to add 42mm in height to the existing bracket, and the resulting longer bolt would need to be 110-115mm long, M10 diameter.

Darn if a spacer gets anywheres near 100,me thinks the stock shock my doing just fine,not to say the time and effort not worth xx amout but it is just a spacer.

My wife got me an ebay 929 shock with triangles and dog bone for xmas.

I finally have my workshop such that I can nearly walk into it without tripping on boxes and bins and what not.

Seb suggested I use one end of the dogbone for the spacer, so I took out my trusty sawzall and went to it.

The first blade I attempted to use was a carbide/diamond blade for cutting hard metal. After 20 minutes of sawing I ended up with a clogged blade and barely cut into the dog bone. So I pulled a new 'demolition' blade out and chucked it into the saw. 30 seconds later I had both sides of the dogbone cut. I'll use a grinding bit in my drill press to smooth everything over.

I still can't find my calipers, but my metric tape measure says that the DB is ~34mm. According to previous posts it looks like I'll need 2 washers to make up the 38 to 43 mm to get the correct geometry.

I'll be building my redneck bike table tomorrow and hope to get setup to finally pull the viffer shock. Can grade 8 bolts be had at the orange box store?

If this works out, I'll be offering up the other dogbone end pay-it-forward style...

Oh, and I'll have pix when I work it all out.

I didn't get a chance to get real time in the mancave last night, but I did steal away a bit of time to find my caliper and measure the height of the dog bone. I'll get more pix when I have 'real time' in the cave.

The measure width of the dogbone is 36 mm. I'm going to run to the orange box after work today and pick up a new bolt and a couple of washers.

The picture below shows what the CFO got me for xmas and where I cut the dogbone to make the spacer.

My 12"/300mm caliper says that the 929 shock is 286.4mm, so a 38mm difference. All this is for a 5th gen, I do not know about how the others are setup. I made up a mount tonight, well did the actual forming and welding tonight, at 42 mm longer than stock. Dan, I'll be working on a PM for ya after this post :fing02: . It is made of 7ga/.187" stainless steel, but with a 10.9 bolt. Hard enough to find a stainless bolt in 10X1.25 the way it is, plus from my bit of searching, not an adequate strength available. The bolt is welded in, not going anywhere, all the welds are TIG welded. All I had to go off making this was measuring a new stock mount that I got at the dealer, my 929 shock, and the info on here, so I really hope it works. Dan is my guinea pig as I won't be able to put mine on, much less ride it before he does :mad: When I get to mine I will probably make up a few different lengths, or at least a 38mm to go along with my current 42mm. That way if I get bored I can toss in the other mount and see how it affects the handling, somehow I doubt that will happen but...

I guess I missed that talk, the idea of making an adapter and still using the stock mount never crossed my mind. I haven't put much thought into it, but I don't think that an adapter would be feasible. That makes for another bolt that could come loose or fail. You have to track down another bolt, my mount completely replaces the stock one and reuses all of the original fasteners. I'm not fond of adding another piece, more chances for failure.

More than one way to skin a cat :fing02: As seen in this thread there have been several different methods shown that ended with the same results.

No, the shock reservoir is in the way of the two rear spark plug coils where it is mounted on the back side of the cross member of the frame. I looked at it and I didn't think it needed to be grounded, so I have so far just unscrewed them and let them sit on the rubber heat shield and it still works fine. I'm going to modify the bracket somehow so it will be grounded on the frame again before I'm done. I'm thinking a short piece (1-1/2 or 2 inches) with two holes in it will be enough. I'll post pics on my 750 conversion thread when I get it.

Yes the ignition coils. After some flipping and switching I cam up with the same idea last night. I removed the stock bracket and flatten an L bracket I had and should be good to go. Ill post up some pics when I get home tonight. Thanks

My bracket is only an inch or so long. It puts the coils at an angle instead of straight vertical and lowers them slightly. They're secure, and while it's a tight fit, nothing makes contact with anything else. I have a pic I'll post later as well.

Hi Folks!!..first off, I would like to thank the many knowledgeable people in this forum to help me make the swap to a 929 shock possible. I just want to share my experiences of the install on my 5th gen. and hopefully to add some additional info to those who may be considering the swap.

(1) I went with making my own upper shock mounting bracket instead of modify the stock one just in case I decided to switch back. Here�s the AutoCAD drawing of both brackets. I decided on making it 42mm above stock length (vefeers� idea). This gives me approximately an additional 6mm overall shock assembly length above stock.

(2) Ramax was the material used. It�s made by a Swedish company named Bohler-Uddeholm. It�s a pre-hardened chromium alloyed steel with good corrosion resistance and has excellent machinability.

(3) I used a M10 x 1.5 x100mm ISO 12.9 grade (equivalent to SAE grade 8) socket head bolt so I can countersink it into the bracket and secure with a set screw to stop it from turning during installation. I also used a grade 12.9 lock nut. Please note the above drawing shows a pitch of 1.0mm for the allen(socket) head bolt. In fact, I had to use one with a 1.5mm pitch. My local fastner supplier told me I had to order at least 25 of them to get it...to rich for my blood!.

(4) With the bracket installed, I could not fit the shock successfully through the swing arm. It was interfering with the exhaust pipes. I had to loosened the bolt so that the bracket would pivot�it did the trick. As a result, I had to turn the shock eye bolt around so that I can access and torque the nut to spec.

(5) There is definite interference between the reservoir and the bottom of the battery tray. There�s some flexibility in the tray and I think it�s only forcing the battery to sit a little higher than usual. During the install I had to force the bottom eye towards the shock link plates (triangular ones) by about an inch.

(6) A scissors jack with a piece of wood under the rear sprocket was invaluable in aligning the shock linkage plate holes during install and removal/installation of the shock itself.

(7) With the ride height increased, the rear wheel clears the garage floor by only an 1/8 of an inch when on its center stand. It would be interesting how close it would be with a new tire!.

(8) As a baseline, I set the pre-load to 7 out of 9 (with 9 being �hard�), compression at � turn out from full in and rebound at � turn out from full in. I got these settings from poster named Jester from another forum.

BTW, I have 3 extra M10 x 1.5 x 100mm socket head bolts listed in the Pay It Forward section. I had to buy a minimum amount at the time to get them.

Well Track day was yesterday and after trying to adjust my SAG settings on the rear shock it seems the 929 yellow spring is too soft for my 185 lb weight. Its at the top preload and still have 50mm. When I first put it on it seemed that I had 35mm of sag at the 3 setting but I was by myself and could have been off or there has been some settling since install. So Ill track down Jamie for an upgraded spring change. Just wanted to let the other more stout riders know. Brian

Sorry, I was thinking your bracket to work with the 929 shock that would leave the bike at the stock height. (I'm a short guy).
You have set the standard.

All it would take is to 'shorten' the seating face of the bracket I made and the bolt by approximately 6mm(0.236") to bring back to stock height. But by doing this I suspect there will be more interference/pressure on the bottom of the battery tray. Maybe someone who has done this mod and left it at stock height might be able to shed some light on this matter...anyone?.

The spring colour on the 929 shock does not matter, the one with the white spring is from the Erion edition 929 and is identical to the other one, save for the spring colour.

The 954 shock has the gold colored reservior like this one:

Seems like there are 2 kinds of 5th gen people doing this mod, those with interference between the reservoir and those without. I'm one of those with:) If I rotate the top of the shock 90 degrees, to the reservoir points forward instead of to the right, I have plenty of space. Is the shock OK with this? Will it damage anything internal? It seems the spring tension makes this quite difficult, but force can trump good judgement. I know the spring doesn't care, it's the internal bits I'm concerned about.

One alternative to rotating the top of the shock is to trim the plastic that extends forward from the battery box. I'd rather not do that, it looks to provide some protection to some electrical parts. I think that's a very good thing and don't want to compromise that. I'm probably over thinking that, but, hey, it's my motorbike. Has anyone trimmed this piece without taking it off the bike? Any other problems stem from this?

I could also, maybe, add more spacers to my top mount setup. I'm using a stack of washers, 40mm for now. I see that some have gone as high as 45mm, that would probably clear the plastic. I do have space between the bottom of the shock and the dogbone. My concern is that at 40mm, I measure 19mm more ride height, assuming I measured right. If I add 5mm more to the shock, that's a lot more ride height. I measured from a flat on the axle nut to the bottom of the key slot on the helmet lock/seat release latch.

Also, about the bolt that holds it all in place. It seems it's there to hold things in place, and any force to it from suspension movement is pretty minor. If this is the case, there's no need to use a super strong bolt. If I could find one around here easily, I would, I haven't been able to find larger metric sizes locally. Should I make the effort to get a high strength bolt?

Last question....by using washers, the shock is not keyed at the top, nothing to resist preload adjustments. Any problems here?

I think no trimming is needed if you use a 929 shock, it's just tight!

A grade 5 bolt should be plenty strong enough, Ace Hardware carries a good amount of metric bolts.

Last question....by using washers, the shock is not keyed at the top, nothing to resist preload adjustments. Any problems here?

Hi Scott, I've been able to source large metric grade 8 bolts when needed from Napa. I even call and have gotten somebody knowledgeable about pitch and sizing to confirm they have what I need before I roll.

btw- don't forget to set sag while you're thinking about it.

I wanted to post a follow up to my 929 shock install fun.

I thought I was a genius with my idea to rotate the reservoir counter clockwise 90 degrees, so it points forward. Nope, not a genius. The longer bolt and the shock don't exactly line up, they're at a slight angle to each other. If the upper mount is rotated, you can see the bracket getting bent and torqued funny as you tighten the bolt, and certainly th eshock was getting a force on it it wasn't designed for. I didn't like that, so I turned it back. The frame crossmember where the blt attaches, the bolt and stack of washers seem very strong, I can't imagine any issues from this torque. I'm light-ish, 175lbs, and don't ride 2-up. I hope I'm right.

I'm one of those 5th gen guys with interference, no question about it. I trimmed off the flap extending forward from the battery box. Not my favorite thing, but looking at the original shocks' upper mount, it's pretty clean up in there, so I don't expect issues. I did try 45mm, still had interference.

I did find a speciality fastener shop, courtesy of the BMW car dealer. I got a grade 8.8 with a 17mm locking nut, nylon insert. Much harder than what I had, it took some time on the grinder to get it to clear the shock.

No issues with rotating the shock apart from preload adjustments. I can grab it with something to get that done.

Impressions: This is only my second motorcycle, so I'm not qualified to say more tham "I like it", so there you have it. I measured 38mm difference in length between the original and the 929 shock, and I made my stack of washers 40mm. From there, it looks like I have 19mm increase in ride height at the back, if I measured right. I used the settings from SportRider magazine that vifferluv pointed out. With all that, it seems to like to turn better and seems more steady in faster corners. Slow stuff and regular commuting, these settings are too harsh, I'll probably leave them though.

So, that's my story. Now about them forks...

am after standard vfr height as adjustment is avaliable on the shock.. with a 929 front end i may well need to get more length out of the front as its shorter than normal vfr, by adjusting the rear a touch on the shock...

Will i need to adjust the height from 36mm-38mm?

bodywork stripped, battery out, battery metal shround out also .. metal shround is cut down to remove the large lip which inteferes with new shock..
Also threw out the rubber piece that was floating about....

And finally you cant even see all the effort you've been to..
Altho actually a very easy mod after examples here have been followed...
But...
After fitting i found shock to be very soft. Probally as i had shock refreshed by k-teck here at the grandstand during TT week. and all settings have been backed right off..
I had to move up the damping and rebound to almost max! Was after about 10cm travel so turned up preload quite a bit also.

Shock is way soft and still have more scope to improve if i was to re-valve and re-spring to suit bike when build finished..
Maybe a standard honda 929 shock would not need so much work??
Over all im over-joyed with the ride improvement and have shown a few newer blades on the circuit here what for!
Shock feels like silk slippers on me rear end now.. and 140mph cornering is comfy!
Am going to have to fit me fireblade front end asap.. but im out of money and i want clocks and ancilleries to make good..............
Have locked up me AP caliper brake unit to swing arm.. looks amazing... woop woop... but..
i cant afford to pay the guy who did the welding job as i lost me job last week.. tut.. but yes it looks trick as fk.. pics to follow.... i hope funds allowing...

I've set the spring adjuster to the 3rd hardest position (I think that is 7 out of 9). Both other screws are on the standard position I guess (pitted mark next to the screw).
Seems to go just fine, even with a passenger I can take speed bumps much faster.

You're obviously not talking about late model CBR1000s (or CBR600s) as the shocks on these is incorporated into the swingarm. :warranty:

I wonder if one of these can be modded and fitted into my 6th gen: a 2009 GSXR 1000 rear shock, i found someone selling brand new ones for $150 each.


Would have to know stroke and overall length, also I'm sure you can find them on eBay or WERA for less than $50.
Like this shock, many newer ones have Hi & low speed comp. adjustment to boot! :laugh:

Yeah, it seems that many gixxers are sprung in the 400lb range which is less than half of why our Under sprung VFR's run stock(850lbs) and like for a 190lb person like me need a 1100lb spring on the VFR, but a re-valve/respring could bring it to terms. Will no be a bolt in no matter what, where as shocks on CBR 929's are sprung exactly the same as our VFR's so it's a much closer drop in shock with the addition of a mount spacer, but again stock is under sprung for most of us. :rolleyes:

I just built the spacer like baileyrock did drilling a hole in hex aluminum bar but I drilled the hole too big for the bolt. I used a 1/2" drill bit when something like a 27/64" (.42 inch) bit would have been perfect. Should I try to fill the gap with jb weld or not worry about it since the spacer will be compressed? I'm worried about the spacer walking around. Thanks for any help, I can post pics tonight if need be.

Edit: I decided to redo the spacer as I don't want to worry about a critical suspension component failing due to my lazyness. A 25/64" bit is the ticket for a snug fit

I would say not an issue, if its walking around then your nut isn't tight enough. Once its tight it shouldn't move at all.

I finally put mine in, with the reservoir to the rear it contacts some plastics and I didn't like that plan. I looked back at the beginning of this thread and saw that the original poster put the reservoir forward, so thats how I put mine in. I also made a spanner wrench for the 929 shock, if anyone needs one let me know.

Any suggestions as to where to start with the adjustments on this thing??

I made two mounts, one the 42 mm and the other 40 mm. I installed the 42 mm first. The rear tire is barely off the ground on the center stand and the bike definitely leans over more on the side stand. My bike is still in pcs from a wipe out Fathers day so I haven't ridden it since.

I need a spanner as my tools were dropping out the back of my bike like some kind of bombing run this weekend. Almost took out 2 of the riders behind me. Let me know how much $$ for a good wrench. Also with the shock the other way are you able to get to the top adjustment?

Just to specify, the spanner wrench is for the 929 shock, not sure it will fit anything else, doesn't grab the stock VFR shock, thats for sure. I cut them out of stainless steel, 7ga. $10 a pc.

As for the adjustment, I do believe I will be able to get to it, looks like I just need to remove the one panel on the right side and looks like I'll be able to get it just above the exhaust pipe. I have not yet tried to adjust it, so I do not know for sure.

PM sent, and I forgot to mention in there that the spanner wrench works great with my 929 in my 5th gen VFR, I have no way to say for certain that it will work on your bike (clearances and what not, just a disclaimer). If it doesn't work I could make a longer/shorter/kinked one...

Heavy and not as elegant as some of the other beautiful spacers people have made, but I'm way more overweight than the bike anyway. Plus I only spent $35 for the shock and 3/8 grade 8 hardware.

Due to the larger diameter spacer, I had to grind a little notch in the top of the spacer to clear the protruding angle in the frame rail. No clearance issues. I rode about 15 miles this am, starting with the preload on the 3th increment from max, with damping set in the middle on both comp. and rebound. So far seems like an improvement in ride quality and control compared to the old stock shock.

Yeah I'm hopefully going to get time to do some measurements later in the week and tweak as needed. I had to get it back together and then get to work supervising my son's science fair project. (I thought suspension upgrades would be a good topic, but got voted down by mom and teacher). I'm about 210 with gear and planning to send everything out to get more appropriate spring rates over the winter.

I've been doing that for almost a year now. The cost is $270 which includes the conversion to the 929 shock to make it fit the VFR plus a new spring (the 929 spring is too soft, by the way). This is a modification to the shock itself which makes it a bolt-on replacement for the stock unit, not a separate bracket. PM me if you would like more details!

I know I'm a little late to the party here but...

Just throwing my $.02 in. Made a spacer and shims so I could "quickly" check out the 929 shock. Thinking of a Daugherty Motorsports makeover if I come to really like it. Really like zach571's design and syjang40's solid billet mount too. First impressions: Much more taut. Much more stable in mid-turn bumps. Need to dial in the comp and rebound. I added a little ride height (10mm). I like the effects of that.

I think I spent as long trying to carefully trim the battery box around the reservoir as making the spacer.

btw if anyone can tell me how a 5th gen battery box could possibly not need trimming for this mod, I'd love to know.

Thanks to everyone (HS, BR, Veefer et.al) who figured this all out for me. (Still took me all day+.)

I added a little ride height (10mm).

You kinda answered your own question there. I added a little more than 10mm to mine ( I have to be sure it's on flat, level ground for the rear tire to spin on the center stand). The reservoir is pushing against the plastic below the fuse block, but it's been that way for 20K+ miles, and hasn't hurt anything. The bike holds a line much better on corner exits under throttle now too.

Didnt have a metric bit for aluminum, ended up with a nice spacer, but not a tight fit around the metric 10.9 grade bolt.

Should this be ok?

Something tells me, not ideal, could introduce movement or slop in the connection. Another argument is that the forces are up and down, once bolted in snug, there should be no torquing laterally. That doesnt seem right either though.

Or does an imperial bolt (sorry the sizes escape me) pass through the frame ok, in which case I would use it....

Last night I got the 929 shock installed, using a 39mm aluminum spacer. The shocks reservoir is facing backwards, away from the head & exhaust, under the plastic tray that is the battery box, but also holds the wiring harness loom.

When bolting up the shock, I did notice the reservoir pushing up against this plastic lip that shields the harness. I dont think its too much of an issue. Is there much movement of the shock & reservoir itself?

Another thing I noticed, the lower adjustment screw on the 929 shock sticks out a little long, and is coming awfully close to the 3 point triangular linkage where I fear contact. Has anyone had this issue?

Can post pics if it helps. Any input appreciated.

quick update....been out for a few km with the 929 shock & new tires so tough to say which has made the improvement, but over rough surfaces and potholes the bike feels alot more planted where before it would get a tad loose in the back end. Not sure what to attribute that to really, assuming the shock is planting the rear end better than before.

So far money/time well spent I think though.

Putting my engineer hat on, Grade 5 in such a critical spot is probly not a good idea.

You can substitute a 3/8 as it's real close to M10. Grade 5 would probably be fine though as it's not a high shock load fastener, and most of the force is upward which doesn't put the bolt under lots of tension. That is unless you frequently un-weight the rear.......

I do not suggest using an extended upper mount to make up that much distance. You would be running a serious risk of failure. All of the 929 shocks that I build are converted so they fit without any changes to the upper mount - FYI

Yup, dragging up an old thread, but I want to update the best motorcycle ever built, so why not.

My 01 is showing some signs of its age and want to do some modest updates, can you blame me, no.

*I am hoping that someone may have taken the time to build a nice spacer unit to make up the difference on the 929 shock and have an extra to sell.

If not there is enough info here to build my own.

The front end is easy, I plan on taking it to a local suspension shop http://www.rmrsuspensions.com/ and let Rod do his magic on his recommendations.

I have one of Jamie's CBR929 shocks. I think he uses an off the shelf Hyperco spring of a suitable diameter and rate, plus a custom aluminium spacer to get the length right.
