This was mentioned this in the old thread, but it's worth repeating here.

I know the 6th-gen guys are wondering when their kit will arrive -- it's coming. I need to get the 5th-gen kits up and going first, and then the 6th-gen will have a kit adapted to it. The bikes are very similar so it shouldn't take too long to make the necessary changes. If you are a 6th-gen owner in the PA area and would like to be a guinea pig, let me know.

160hp sounds cool till you start to factor the other mods this will incur.When under boost you had better have a programmable ECU to manage fuel air mixture,a heavy duty clutch and do you want to be the test pilot as far as reliability etc. etc. etc.

Heavy duty clutch springs are all ready included and it is clearly stated that a PC III is needed for tuning. :warranty:
Besides, any performance increase comes at a cost some where down the line. I have seen much worse kits assembled for people who have no clue and just want more power. This was designed for the 5th Gen from the very beginning and something tells me Toro doesn't just let that bike sit in a garage. ;)

Moto, as stated on the website, you will need a PCIII to run this kit. Many riders already own one, so I am not including it, but I am including a custom fuel map that should be very, very close to perfect for most people. The object was not to build a kit that then needed hundreds of dollars worth of install and tuning after being purchased, but rather assemble the most complete, hassle-free kit I could make.

Little things like coil-relocation brackets, fairing spacers with modified bolts, OEM gaskets, pre-cut hoses, pre-gapped sparkplugs, parts that carefully bolt onto stock mounting locations, and even a special spanner wrench that installs the timing cover properly are included because I've bought bad kits in my day and know I cannot sell a subpar system with my name attached to it.

Heavy duty clutch springs are included as well and, together with the stock Honda clutch plates, completely eliminate clutch slippage. I've been riding (and beating on) this bike since the summer of '07, and have yet to incur a single fault with the suspension, brakes, chassis, chain, engine, fuel system, cooling system, or any other system - it just works. I'm not trying to sell a bill of goods here, this kit is for serious VFR riders who want a seriously powerful V4 and do not want to drop $18k on the new VMax, $30k on the RSV4, or $50k+ on the Desmosedici.


I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, but if you are a VFR800 rider seeking this level of power you have 2 options available: 1) add forced induction, or 2) buy a different bike. Either way, you can plan on spending a similar amount, but only with the first option do you get to retain the unique qualities that made you want a VFR in the first place. Now, maybe I'm a bit biased here (;)), but I have a feeling that once others get to ride a blown VFR, they will know what I am talking about.

Okay, come on guys... They aren't making these 5th gens anymore. Get yours now before they are the most coveted motorcycles in the world and I up my trade offer to a late model K1200 or an 848. :491:

Just curious - I need to know how much weight to cut off the bike before the 6th Gen kit becomes available!

Congratulations Dan on finishing this incredible project. I have been following the project site since the beginning with much interest and often times with great wonder.

Some people used to say "there is no replacement for cubic inches". We here in Europe have found the replacement a long ago. With cars the nowdays norm is starting to be 1,4 liter engine with turbocharger(s) instead of double the size fuel eaters with similar power output.

Looking over pictures of your kit I don't see any injectors or a bigger oil cooler. I seem to recall you changed your injectors and added a bigger oil cooler. Maybe my memory is fading a little. You might have only installed bigger injectors.

Vince, I originally installed larger injectors, but have since changed the fueling system setup. I now run the stock injectors with higher fuel pressure, and the rideability, fuel economy, and throttle response have all increased. Plus, it is less involved both mechanically and financially.

The oil cooler is another major aspect of the kit that has changed. This is the new cooler design. It works excellent and takes up far less space. Plus, it leaves room for a water-to-air intercooler heat exchanger if need be in the future.

Serious looking stuff. I'm impressed!! Like the switch to the carbon overhead body... weight and space saving reasons I imagine.

So what sort of mileage do you get out of the bike on mixed riding over a tank of gas??? Does it add enough weight, and power for that matter, to consider stiffer fork /shockie springs??

The carbon intake hat was designed to work with an intercooler and also to distribute the incoming air as evenly as possible. Whether or not the intercooler makes it to production, it has succeeded in the power producing department and is both lightweight and low-profile.

I have been getting nearly 40mpg in normal mixed riding conditions. The only time I noticeably see a drop in mileage is performing flat-out dyno pulls or after a very hard day of sport riding.

You should not be able to notice a difference in weight. The supercharger itself weighs only 6lbs, and the rest of the componentry is mainly aluminum. I will weigh the parts taken off the bike and compare them to the weight of the kit parts soon, as I know others have been wondering what the difference truly is.

I currently only have a working map for the PCIII. The PCII can work, but I would first need to develop a map for it.

What exactly would the deal be if one were to offer their 6th gen as a guinea bike?

Great kit, looks like a lot of thought went into it. I must say that I am very impressed. Your average gear monkey can slap a supercharger onto a bike, but it takes real talent to produce a polished and streamlined kit. Great job!

I have followed this all the way. There was such an extended silence from you that I feared you had moved on & it would never materialise. That kit looks beautiful - as does the dyno chart.

Economics have turned against you so sales will be lower than they would have been.

Once some of these have humiliated 1000 cc superbikes and the even bigger bikes they will gain a legendary reputation. The birth of a legend I predict.

Brilliantly done Dan. (That it can be a sleeper is wonderful but most will have your logo all over them I suppose.)

Awsome, you have alot to be proud of here...Your orange VFR needs to be in a coupls mags Sport Rider, MC..even Sport Tuner (others alike) They should all be interested....Now if only I had the $$ now at this time, but maybe when the eco system comes back alive!!!

Your kit has a higher-rated fuel pump; does it also have a higher pressure FPR? Is that one I see in one of the photos?

One possibility from all the time and research you've put into this product is that you will probably be able to sell components to VFR owners who can't afford the whole kit, but are interested in components like the Laminova cooler, and the uprated fuel pump.

I have been getting more requests for the RC now that the site has launched. It's certainly a possibility, but I do have other bikes lined up to receive kits first. If there's enough demand I'll make a kit for any bike, but without feedback it's very hard to gauge real interest.

It should work fine with the stock exhaust, but just realize that with the supercharger, the more exhaust flow the better, which is why I'm kicking around the idea of making a full system with larger diameter tubing. There's certainly power to be gained by opening up the exhaust.

As it stands, catless '98-'99 headers are the best flowing pipes found on any VFR. I'll find out how much power is lost from the cat once I bolt a kit onto a '00-'01.

Again, a slip-on is not needed, but will certainly bump up the power output -- if you're able to gain an extra 5hp or so on a naturally aspirated motor, you can imagine what it will do with the supercharger. This is also why I don't quote actual hp increases, as bikes and dynos vary too much from one another to accurately nail down a number. However, a percentage increase I can quote, as boost is boost, and affects your engine's efficiency (changing the exhaust will only help to increase that efficiency).

After watching your progress, researching on my own, and learning along with the others here on VFRD, I am convinced that you have created the perfect force-fed system for our bikes, with all the benefits of a turbo (efficiency), but with easier packaging and oiling system.

I've expressed my interest before in a 6th gen kit, and I am still a future buyer of such a kit, after it becomes available.

I agree, the 6th gen kit is probably going to end up selling more in the end, but there are a LOT of 5th gen bikes around yet!

I've already gotten the nod OK from the "boss", and that's most of the battle, isn't it?

Can't wait to see the 6th gen! :dry:

Let's put it this way -- watching that original test run video now makes the bike seem tame. I'm contemplating returning my gearing back to stock as my front end has seen daylight in 5th gear. As long as you're ready for the power and put some weight over the tank, keeping the front end down really isn't an issue...

WOW very very nice now I don't need to buy another bike. There goes my kids college fund. Hope to be ordering this summer if all works out with the BOSS. Quick question, I have a 5th Gen 00 W/ Motad full exhaust without O2 and no Cat. and TBR Slip on. Will your map for PCIII work with this or should I need a retune done to match?

I think it'd be great to see some new footage of the bike in action (racetrack, quarter-mile etc). Toro do you have any plans to add any soon? I have a 6th gen. and I need to occupy myself with something until you have a kit for 6th generation. The wait is proving to be too painful   :laugh: !

Actually, just thought of an occasion where wheelspin occurs -- dyno time.  If you do not have the bike strapped down fully with good weight on the back, it will spin the rear tire up.  Funny looking dips & peaks on a dyno chart let you know when this is occurring.

Big congrats Dan. That kit is top notch. All I can think of is Fifth Gen streetfighter with your kit on it.

Also, I'm sure your hitting the publicity ideas pretty hard right now, but maybe also consider landspeed racing. That is a great venue for "Showing off." I know of a guy in So. Cal building a streamliner powered by a 6th gen motor. Maybe hook up with him and set a record or two.

This kit will also be a hit with the custom buggy/formula car crowd. Maybe help an off-road fabricator build a buggy and market it through off-road magazines. Whoa, I'd better start stocking up on 5th gen motors ASAP.   :goofy:

A long time ago, in the original supercharger build thread, I had asked Toro if he had considered using CBR1100XX injectors instead of the RC ones he modified.

Today, just for giggles, I looked up the part numbers, and I don't think they are any different, one to the other.

CBR1100 = 06164-PCB-OOO
VFR800   = 06164-PCA-OOO


Only the product code in the middle is different, so the parts should be identical in every respect.


No help really, but just for info and to soothe my curiosity from the old thread.

The Blackbird injectors are identical in function, appearance, and dimension to the VFR injectors, but they flow 50cc/min more.  The only reason I'm not using Blackbird or S2000 injectors in the kit is that Keihin simply does not make them anymore and they cannot be purchased for a realistic price unless you're talking about thousands of units.  Thus, I got around this whole injector problem by reusing the stock injectors and modifying the fuel pressure.

The only reason bigger injectors would be needed now is if an intercooler is added and/or more power is desired.

Sounds like a great product, but have to ask you one question. When they design these bikes they know around how much power is going to the rear wheel and they put components that can handle that much power and a little more. With this supercharger the bike is going from around one hundred horse power to one hundred fifty horse power, that is a huge increase. Am by no means an expert but from what I have seen all the RR sport bikes do not have a single side swing arm and even in some brochures they mention dual swing arms are needed to handle the horse power. Sounds like a great product but these question should be asked, especially on a vehicle with only two wheels.

Fair questions to ask, my take is - Honda over-engineers every component of the bike, and especially those components that are regularly loaded. It's made to take a lot of punishment, that's why the VFR is so heavy. Also, you are not using all of those 150 hosses all the time, so the actual increase in stress for the drivetrain is fairly negligible.

The VFR is probably one of the strongest motorcycles on the market, and is ideal for this sort of modification.

The single sided swingarm is not an issue at all. The racing RC45s used in WSB were punching out 200hp and I'd be surprised if they ever had a swingarm failure - they went to a conventional swingarm towards the end of the RC45s racing life to try to get better tyre wear and performance, not because of strength problems.


My only concern would be for the gearbox, which is the only major VFR drivetrain component that I've known to fail (a mate's 4th Gen had a bearing cage collapse, but it was a high mileage bike that he'd royally abused). It's a split-the-cases job to replace the gearbox internals. But then again if you're building a 150hp VFR you pretty much have to accept that it's possible that you may one day need to resolve such a problem, and anyway it's a good excuse to slip some bigger pistons in for 870cc :491:

"Only the product code"...is the whole shootin' match!  The first set of numbers is going to be identical for every part that has the same basic function (i.e., "fuel injector"), and the last set of numbers essentially refers to the revision and subcontractor (generally "000" unless there are regional differences, colours, updates/revisions or subcontractor changes), so the MAIN part of the number that changes to indicate a different part specification is the middle one.  

That said, "PCA" isn't the normal product code for the VFR800 (nor is "PCB" the code for the Blackbird), so these are clearly some sort of special category designations.  I would have to say that the part numbers probably don't tell us anything--except that the specification is DIFFERENT in some way (e.g., they flow 50cc/min more)...

The difference here is that the power is not dumped on the components all at once.  It builds linearly so that while you are already underway, moving faster and faster, power is applied more and more.  If you could bore this engine out to 1300cc, there would be real concern.  However, you can't, and the torque curve is so smooth that there's no hammering of components (and remember, it's not like you are riding around with 160hp & 70lb-ft at all times).  As was mentioned, most components - while not exactly the same spec - were developed during the RC45 program, where considerably more abuse was placed on them than will ever be put on a street-ridden VFR.

Well, consider that for the vast majority of time spent riding, the engine does not even see boost (thanks to the vacuum operated bypass valve), which means that cruising and light acceleration conditions are unchanged from the stock setup.

Remember, the #1 killer of forced induction engines is detonation/pre-ignition. As long as the proper octane fuel is used, this is not an issue with A&A supercharger kits, as proper tuning and air/fuel ratios have been carefully worked out in advance to negate this scenario.

The boost curve of the centrifugal is also very easy on the drivetrain. Torque kills components, but since the supercharger builds boost in a linear manner, there isn't an overabundance of torque down low. Plus, keep in mind that the acceleration forces of the rod & piston moving up and down 200 times per second @ 12000rpm far outweigh the forces of increased combustion activity.

Running quality fluids, sticking to maintenance schedules, and riding in an intelligent manner will ensure solid performance for years to come.
I cannot guarantee the life of components if you strap a slick on the back, slam the bike, and launch it flat out on a dragstrip pass after pass -- the bike, and the kit, were not developed for that.  I can only speak of real world durability with my bike, and it has passed that test flawlessly thusfar.

Also, this is a Supercharger and not a turbo kit.  If it were a turbo you would have a "hit" on the system when the boost reaches a certain level and finally kicks in.  Superchargers are great in the aspect that linearity is inherently built in.  This allows you more power at lower rpms that ramp up in a very friendly manner.  

You need a real world example?  Look to that 18 wheeler on the highway.  A good number of them use multiple superchargers for low end torque to move those heavy loads and they are good for 500k miles if maintained correctly?

If you want boost AND longevity superchargers tend to be the path of choice.  The draw backs are you don't get as much boost as a turbo and they tend be be harder to optimize as they are not as efficient as turbos but for the VFR, do you really need more than 150-160 hp for a street application?  

(If you say yes then build your own custom kit and you will quickly see that Toro is putting together one hell of a deal as far as quality and design are concerned.  After all, it took him 2 years to develop the kit to what it is today.)

You know, I would like to see Toro's VFR in that Busa vs VFR thread people just won't let die.   :rolleyes:

Such fuel is not *always* available everywhere in Australia - sometimes you can only get 91 RON (approx. 87 US octane), but 95 RON is fairly common.  What is your advice in these circumstances?

My car - a 4 litre six cylinder turbo - will run on 91 but only because it has a knock sensor AND a closed-loop EFI system driven by the O2 sensors.  The VFR doesn't have this of course....

Thanks for posting that, John.  I was waiting for that article to hit, but they misspoke about the dyno tuning.  The only reason you'd need to play with the map is if you have a significantly different exhaust system than the factory header and/or pipe/slip-on.

If you truly plan to never hit boost, and only operate at part throttle conditions and lower rpms (<7000), then regular gas if fine.  However, if you intend to go into the boost, then I highly, highly recommend 91-93 (R+M)/2 or 95-98 RON gasoline.  Even still, if you get a bad tank of gas or intend to do some serious prolonged boosting, a race-gas mix or octane booster can offer further protection against detonation/pre-ignition.

I run my bike on 92-93 (R+M)/2 here in the states and have no trouble.  I have also found that the Lucas MMT-based octane booster works quite well with junky gas (believe me, you will feel a difference with a bad tank).


Also, I've seen the Motad header and it would be a nice upgrade for someone with a cat.  I would still like to build a system with larger diameter tubing and a nicer collector design to free up some more power from this engine.

There's no way it would work with that style of frame slider as that sits right where the belt runs. If you want to run frame sliders, they would have to mount further outboard or more towards the rear of the bike, where the frame bolts to the engine.

TightwadNever mind that the frame sliders pictures are basically useless, and guaranteed to crush your radiators on any impact....not where i would want a slider!

Is that a guess or have you actually seen how they stand up to crash damage? The structure that the sliders are attached to is immensely strong and forms some kind of a bird cage around the engine so it (the structure) is very rigid and seems able to withstand impacts.

They are made by Bike Design from Belgium and their specialty is frame slider design.

Toro, I have been looking at the Laminova oil cooler and I was wondering if it can be applied to 6th generation right away. I ride throughout summer in Istanbul and it can get quite hot here (the temperature between June and September averages 28°C / 82°F) made worse by really terrible traffic jams. It'd be nice to help the cooling. What do you think?

I've been riding VFRs since they were VFRs. '86. I love the power qualities, sound, handling, comfort and style. I have been frustrated by the lack of out right horsepower when trying to safely pass slower riders on faster bikes who redline it in the straights while parking it in turns. This is exactly the kind of power I've dreamed of. I'll start the rationalization process now in the hopes i can over come the sticker shock.

Probably the best reason for fitting the supercharger kit Ive seen - well put. That is exactly the number one problem with the stock VFRs power levels.

landloverSounds like a great product, but have to ask you one question. When they design these bikes they know around how much power is going to the rear wheel and they put components that can handle that much power and a little more. With this supercharger the bike is going from around one hundred horse power to one hundred fifty horse power, that is a huge increase. Am by no means an expert but from what I have seen all the RR sport bikes do not have a single side swing arm and even in some brochures they mention dual swing arms are needed to handle the horse power. Sounds like a great product but these question should be asked, especially on a vehicle with only two wheels.

Speaking about the swingarm itself, there was a stunt team in calgary called Canadian Chaos.

They ran early model CBR900s fitted with VFR750 swingarms and wheels (for quick and easy tire changes).

Three and Four-up wheelies, miles-long burnouts, and as much abuse as you can heap on a Stunna bike and I asked the lads if they'd had any troubles with the swingarms.

Nope, nada, zilch. :fing02:

Oh, and one member here has fitted a SSSA to a CBR1100XX @ 137HP.

It would certainly help, but before you go spending money changing the cooling system around, I'd recommend swapping in some fresh coolant and adding some Water Wetter. Just add 4oz of the stuff to the coolant and you should see lower coolant temps. If that's not enough, you can always swap to a larger cooler off a bigger bike. Don't get me wrong, I'll gladly sell you a Laminova cooler, but it's just not necessary for your application, unlike a supercharged setup, where compact space & much greater cooling capacity is paramount.

ive read this whole thing since I joined, and this kit may very well be the reason I end up getting a 98-99 instead of a 6th gen if I upgrade from my 95, or add a new bike and give the 95 to the wife ( whom i am determined to turn into a rider at some point) I am all for supercharging stuff. I did a paxton on my 99 camaro.. blowers rock!! anyone have this installed yet?

130 km's in, i let it loose... 1'th gear, just gone, 2'd: power wheelie with a good dose of ignition cut (yes, it came faster than i was expecting), third: i need a steering damper, 4'th god damn... it just no more road. Good thing i had new EBC brakes on all wheels, cause nothing can stop this one now. And the rideability is just better than stock. going slow on the gas, and just making it run along up to approx. 6000 is just as good as it can ever be. Going further, with little throttle makes it feel a bit lean on the mixture actually, but twist a bit more and it just comes back. This is just the best time i ever had on any of my bikes.

And it just feels so, so very very right. There is no sign of the bike not handling it, the feeling i have is just that this kit just adds what the bike never had, or should have had. It feels like it will just continue to be this good forever, strange as i know my mechanics and what force feeding an engine with this kind of compression can possibly do. There is no weak sign, it does not feel like anything is on the peak of what it can take.

I've tried to explain in the past what it feels like to ride a supercharged bike, but I think you've nailed it here. It's just a really fun powerband to play with, and that rev-limiter does come up awfully fast.

Cheaper? No, unfortunately. Even more important though is the packaging of the beast -- the C15-60 fits perfectly in its location, and anything bigger would not fit without major work. The only other option is a turbo setup, and then we get into some heavy duty exhaust work, which would basically offset the $$$ savings over the supercharger. If we were producing more units, then the cost could be lowered, but since the numbers had to be scaled back, the cost went up. If only the VFR was as easy to package as the I4 bikes...

Speaking of production, I have gotten and am still getting a lot of requests for the 6th-gen kit. This might be a good time to take a sampling of current interest; if you have a 2002-2009 VFR800 and would be legitimately interested in purchasing a supercharger kit - priced the same as the 5th-gen kit ($5495) - please send us an email (no PMs please) stating your intent. We have a decent inventory of parts that can be adapted to the newer bikes, but I still need to figure out initial numbers a bit better before going into production. As always, if enough people want the kit, the price can come down, but until then the number has to stay where it's at.

I've yet to try different gearing. There's no doubt that a larger front sprocket would help with first gear, but once this thing starts pulling, it doesn't take long to reach redline, in pretty much any gear.

Maybe I'll swap the stock sprockets back on once I finish up my secret project I'm currently working on.

It is the one that you know about Seb, and it looks slightly different then when you saw it last. I'll tell you what else, after riding around on an '08 GSXR1000 for a few days, the VFR needs to go on a diet. Badly. I'm already thinking about where some weight can be shaved...

We have a decent inventory of parts that can be adapted to the newer bikes, but I still need to figure out initial numbers a bit better before going into production. As always, if enough people want the kit, the price can come down, but until then the number has to stay where it's at.

If I knew of an ETA for the sixth gen kit then I could better budget for the cost. As it is I would love to have it as I have upgraded my car with a SC and the bike would be next but until I know for sure a time frame I can't set aside the extra funds forever.

Also I am alittle worried about the vtec transition with the SC. HOW BAD WILL IT BE???

Ah, well, mine's stalled for the time being. Zanotti's let me down (for the first time ever, so hard to complain), so no new $66 OEM fuel filter until after I'm back in London. I was probably not going to get it done on time anyway, considering all of the time I spend slobbering all over the components every time I go in the garage! The machined parts in this kit are almost too nice to bolt onto the bike... tongue.gif

Hi All,

Just fitted a kit for guy here in the UK (alvintc) and got to ride it a bit before he took it away sad.gif Alvintc is now on vacation so no doubt he'll be posting what he thinks when he returns but I thought I'd give my impressions.

Firstly the kit is excellent. Well thought out, well made and properly engineered. We had a few small problems with fitting but nothing significant. We did other work on the bike to make sure the chassis and brakes were up to the job of coping with the extra power but nothing major, just stuff you should do anyway. So how did the bike go?...Well I can't say anymore than copy a post here I made somewhere else in answer to the "Is it any good?" question:

"" Its....different. I don't know why but I was expecting some kind of fire-breathing, uncompromising, hard to handle monster, like a ZX10R on a bad day. But its nothing like that. Instead its just a VFR. A plain, ordinary, predictable and easy to ride VFR. But better.

Its so linear, smooth and subtle that at first it seems almost disappointing. Where is the "kick"? The mean, nasty, tear-your-arms-out monster? And that sums it up really!

The bike is fantastic, just fantastic. More than fast enough for the roads, easy to ride & make the most of and just bloody good fun. During our test runs on a 1 mile straight I passed a Blackbird (CBR1100XX) being ridden at a "normal" pace. I reached the other end of the straight, turned around, took my hlemet and gloves off and was busy talking to my friends before the BB rider came past.

We haven't had it on a dyno yet but with the narrower bore pipes on the FiY/Fi1 bikes compared to the FiW/FiX bikes I suspect it will be making a bit less than Toro's 160. If alvintc is game I've a plan for Phase II where we put some better downpipes (Headers I believe you non-English speakers call them tongue.gif ) a bigger LH radiator for better cooling and some bigger brake discs.

Need to to start saving for my own kit now. :rolleyes:

quick update while work permits (always the same).

's alright is this kit.

Lets start with the whole hard to describe.. I disagree. It's very easy to describe how it feels, it just may be hard to understand.

OK, everyone has seen the dyno's right? So you all understand just how linear the power comes in, there's no fear, no rush just very very rapid progress. So what does it feel like? Easy, feels like someone chucked 500 cubes on the bike. Simple.

Well, no not really. Because although that's what it feels like, what it really feels like is that low revs it feels the same as before* for every couple of hundred revs it increases it feels like a few more cubes are there. Make sense?

Fuel consumption it's slightly worse (I'm talking 20 miles per tank), however before the kit went on my air filter & oil were both sorely past their sell by dates...

Heat. Heat is an issue I'll need to address, for me I'm thinking a custom rad on the left will help but as I live in London, too much traffic & not enough air.

Dave's already mentioned the problems we (he!) had fitting the kit and what needed to be done to over come this (this was the first FiY/ Fi1), I'll post a pic when I get 20 mins.

No baseline I'm afraid, it's also been on there a little while & done a few miles so it's nicely settled.

I'm also thinking the dyno over reads... as 170 seems way over the mark.

I'm hoping to get it on a more respected Dyno for an actual setup session at the end of the month.

However the day was good. Initially dyno guys apologised as the machine was broken (they didn't notice the stealthy install). They requested me to take my luggage off which was a shame!

Notable results for the shoot out (was at the Ace Cafe, London):

Viff = 170.4

GSXR1000 = 165.9 (no idea the mods past race cans)

CBR1000 = 151 & change (cans)

Did another flush the other week & it's better but still runs warm. I'll be giving the fan swap mod a try when I get round to it, I'm also planning a bigger left-hand rad in the new year which should pretty much sort me out.

For now it's not an issue as the ambient has started to drop here, but next summer will be if I don't get the mods done.

Yep, I'm very close to the Delaware river, so while it's very, very hilly in my area, I'm basically at sea level (the dyno I use is only @ 100ft).

Steve, for your trip, keep my original map (and your tuned map) loaded on the LCD unit -- that way once you come down from the mountains, you can richen up the mixture on the fly (the LCD unit will let you store and swap as many maps as you like). With the denser air, your uncorrected hp will go from your current 156.4hp (173.6hp/ 1.11 - SAE correction factor) to a true uncorrected 170+hp, and you'll need more fuel accordingly (just for reference, my bike pulled 167hp uncorrected).

Yes, my gearing is stock - 16/43 I believe. I will see what I can do on checking the mileage for you. I suspect it won't be too much different at legal speeds, since the engine will be making more power at lower throttle openings, but RPMs should stay the same.

BlitzenveeferOn the exact same dyno the new BMW S1000RR recently made 168.77 HP in full-on "slick" mode. Yup, my little Veefer has the new Uber-Beemer covered by 5 HP!! Sweet.

There's something wrong with that Beemer; "Bike" magazine dyno'd one on a well-calibrated dyno and got 183.7bhp. That was on a bike that wasn't even run in yet (400 miles on the clock).

The VFR MAP sensor is only active at small throttle openings, after that it's a predefined map based on calculated engine volumetric efficiency (for a specific altitude/air density).

A better option would be an Autotune, but since they're not available for the 5th-gen it's somewhat of a moot point!

Since the 98-99 don't have O2 sensors, I'm having a bung welded onto my header to accept the Bosch unit. The PCV's wire harness plugs into 98-09 without issue.

I hope to have results witin a week or two.

I'm wondering how the added HP and torque are felt by the rider. Does it feel comparable to the power delivery of a blackbird? Or is it only really noticeable at higher revs? Does the torque feel greater at the lower revs?

It will compensate for the small stuff, but not WOT (which is why the map I provided, though perfect for me at sea level, was ultra rich for you at 4000ft). We are adding so much air & fuel to the engine that the stock sensors can't keep up. Remember, we bypass the boost from the stock MAP sensor so it doesn't throw a code, but at the same time, it renders it useless once we're pushing boost.

Ultimately, the best way to handle tuning would be to base the fueling off of boost, but to do that, the cost really starts to go up (due to needing a 3-bar MAP sensor, the multi-function hub if using a PCIII, or an entirely different way of handling the tuning). With most riders, unless they are significantly changing elevation, the PCIII is by far the most cost-effective way to dial in the AFR.

In your case, since you already have the LCD unit, you can store as many maps as you like, but if you want even greater tuning capability, then we'd have to look at getting you the multi-function hub and an aftermarket MAP sensor, at which point it truly would not matter where in the world you rode since the fuel added would be proportional to boost.

Hi Jamie,

In a nutshell, normal riding feels exactly the same as before. If anything, compared to stock, throttle response is crisper, starting out is easier, and the engine feels smoother, but it is still a VFR800. Now, there is no doubt that you have more power available to you at all points in the powerband, but in general, if you are at very low rpms (2500-3500), you will not feel much of a difference over stock as the Rotrex is only pushing ~1psi.

In most situations it has always felt to me like the bike is a gear (or two) lower than it would be stock. If you have a steeper gear ratio, the change will be even more noticeable. The power really starts to build around 5000rpm, with serious steam coming around 7-8000. From there on up, there is absolutely no resemblance to a stock VFR, as depending on the ride height and gearing, the front end becomes very light (with stock ride height and a -1/+2 gearing setup, I've had the bike wheelie in 5th-gear, but now with a lowered front end and stock gearing, it stays much more planted).

The bike will pull to redline with absolute authority, as the power never stops increasing -- if you hardly ever reached the redline before, you will once you add this kit. To give you an idea of the power, the bike will wheelie on command from any rpm in the first two gears with the stock gearing, and can easily power wheelie in 3rd & 4th. However, due to the nature of the supercharger, the power is still actually controllable, and you don't have to worry about a sudden boost spike coming out of a turn. 160whp is still 160whp, though, so you need to treat it with respect, and you can have some tense moments if you're not careful.

I have not ridden a Blackbird, but I can compare the powerband to a GSXR1000 & ZX10R. Basically, if it's low rpm torque you're looking for, this kit is not the answer. The bike is only 781ccs, and with low boost output at low rpms, this engine is not transformed into a 1200cc monster. Compared to the literbikes, around town I feel the VFR is actually a bit quicker due to the tranny gearing, but once you get in 3rd & 4th gear (and up), the greater torque of the 1000s (and their smooth firing 180° crank layout) provide a vibe-free, stronger pull from low rpms. If you really want to experience greater torque, changing the final gearing does wonders, but no matter what, 781ccs cannot compete with 1000-1300ccs in the torque department down low.

However, if you're used to the VFR powerband, and are looking for more power, this kit does give you more oomph at all rpms, with an insane amount coming from midrange on up. It makes a great bike even better, and really puts on smile on your face when you crank on the throttle.

Its a blast. Toro's description of the riding experiece matches mine, although I haven't ridden my boosted bike all that much yet due to our crappy spring weather here in the Great White North. One thing I've really noticed is how fast the bike revs once you get into the higher RPM range. The first time I was able to really get on the throttle I was hitting the rev limiter in 3rd and 4th gear just because the bike was accelerating so fast I couldn't shift fast enough. Now that I'm used to it, its not a problem, but its quite a change from stock. Change is good!!

BlitzenveeferI was going to ask you about that Dan. I understand the concept of what you're saying, but won't the computer make that required mixture adjustment based on the readings from the MAP sensor? That is, shouldn't it sense the denser air and add fuel accordingly?

It will compensate for the small stuff, but not WOT (which is why the map I provided, though perfect for me at sea level, was ultra rich for you at 4000ft). We are adding so much air & fuel to the engine that the stock sensors can't keep up. Remember, we bypass the boost from the stock MAP sensor so it doesn't throw a code, but at the same time, it renders it useless once we're pushing boost.

Ultimately, the best way to handle tuning would be to base the fueling off of boost, but to do that, the cost really starts to go up (due to needing a 3-bar MAP sensor, the multi-function hub if using a PCIII, or an entirely different way of handling the tuning). With most riders, unless they are significantly changing elevation, the PCIII is by far the most cost-effective way to dial in the AFR.

In your case, since you already have the LCD unit, you can store as many maps as you like, but if you want even greater tuning capability, then we'd have to look at getting you the multi-function hub and an aftermarket MAP sensor, at which point it truly would not matter where in the world you rode since the fuel added would be proportional to boost.

That's something I'd like to explore Dan. I think having the fuel curve match the boost curve would be the way to go.

Is this pretty much what the PCV does, or would other changes such as those you've mentioned be needed as well?

A better option would be an Autotune, but since they're not available for the 5th-gen it's somewhat of a moot point!

I'm working on that option as we speak as I'm installing a PCV with Autotune on my 98. The PCV will work back to the 00-01 model years as a plug and play. Since the 98-99 don't have O2 sensors, I'm having a bung welded onto my header to accept the Bosch unit. The PCV's wire harness plugs into 98-09 without issue.

I hope to have results witin a week or two.

Do you have any updates on this installation? I'm quite interested in your results.

I got the Wideband 2 from Toro as part of my kit, so I'm good to go on that. I just have to get it installed and then figure out how the heck it works. I've looked at the information and it seems pretty complicated, but hopefully I can figure it out. I have the LCD readout as well. Toro says I can store a bunch of different maps on there and switch between them, but I'll have to ask for his help on that part of it.

Yes, the Autotune is basically a Wideband Commander 2 hooked into the PCV. The PCV is what performs the dynamic fuel adjustment based on the data from the Autotune signal.

This would be a good device to have on the Supercharged motor, with customised AFR entries set to nice and safe numbers when under boost. An advantage of this would be if your fuel was of poor quality for some reason and you suddenly started to run lean, the Autotune could fix it by sending more fuel before you damaged the motor. There is a flipside to this however, in that a failure of the Autotune could possibly result in a dynamic adjustment to LEAN mixture. The risks would really be about the same as driving a factory boosted engine though, so I consider it low risk.

Actually, you can reduce the risk even further by setting a maximim enleanment value in the Autotune to a very low number - maybe even zero. This would mean the Autotune is allowed to richen the mixture beyond what your custom map says, but is not allowed to lean it out.

Sorry but, No, the autotune only works on the PC V. The PC V also adds features like Gear by Gear fuel mapping, and some other stuff.

After trying different maps, and having Dan custom make 2 maps via e-mail, i finally found the time to run a dyno for some realy spot on adjustments...

The numbers went from 156.6 -> 183.2... pretty ok one should say :)

I dont have to say that the gained ponies does kick...

Let the summer begin :)

I thought Steve had the highest power VFR800 locked up with his 175hp run, but you've topped him with this 183hp monster, Kenneth. Do you guys have any ethanol in your gas over there? We're saddled with 10%, which I think might be reducing the power output.

What's really amazing here is we're only pushing about 10psi (without an intercooler) when in general with these superchargers you need ~15psi to double the power.

I'm almost tempted to turn up some bigger crank pulleys and see if we can crack 200whp...

Anyway, i was thinking , when in the future i am going to rebuild the vfr i have laying around, to look into the possibilities of lower rotating weight , cams, other injectors and maybe the "stage 2" with water injection... Anything on the drawing board Dan? ;)

We do not have anything added or taken out of our fuel. if you want to buy e85 (bioethanol/fuel mix) i guess one would have to wait some time as it is on its way as far as i know... but i really cant se why i should switch to that...

On the dyno i ran shell v-power 99 octane ron, but i fill her with unleaded 95 ron for the most part. No additives of any kind cause there has never been signs of detonation, and no power gain, at least not noticeable.

When mentioned, what do you think about this Dan : e3 spark plugs

Is this just long life sparkies or could there be something to it?

What about the "permagap" ngk (if they where made with the vfr thread size) Any toughts?

So what sort of mileage do you get out of the bike on mixed riding over a tank of gas??? Does it add enough weight, and power for that matter, to consider stiffer fork /shockie springs??

The carbon intake hat was designed to work with an intercooler and also to distribute the incoming air as evenly as possible. Whether or not the intercooler makes it to production, it has succeeded in the power producing department and is both lightweight and low-profile.

I have been getting nearly 40mpg in normal mixed riding conditions. The only time I noticeably see a drop in mileage is performing flat-out dyno pulls or after a very hard day of sport riding.

You should not be able to notice a difference in weight. The supercharger itself weighs only 6lbs, and the rest of the componentry is mainly aluminum. I will weigh the parts taken off the bike and compare them to the weight of the kit parts soon, as I know others have been wondering what the difference truly is.

Already started the SC fund. I'll be ready by spring of 2012.
