So I'm still in shock. I woke up this morning and was on my way to work when I found myself standing in the parking spot, next to my bike cover, saying "wasn't there a bike here?".

So my 1998 VFR is gone but to my surprise I did have comprehensive coverage (as of about 7 months ago). So what do you think the insurance should provide for the following.

1998 Honda VFR (red)
about 5,000miles
Chrome Rims
Sargent Seat
Handlebar Risers
Grip Heaters
After market Exhaust (I don't know which one I'll have to ask they guy I bought it from)
TMI timing module
K&N Air Filter

I "think" my coverage (which I forgot that I had until I called progressive) covers NADA price - $250 and up to $1000 in additional "add-ons".

So help me out here what numbers should I accept from the insurance? I know on my car I've always had to fight to get a decent price should I expect the same? I've never used progressive before maybe it will be different with them.

Wow, what a shame. I hope the cops catch the thieves red handed.
#3
Sorry about the theft, man. I can help a little, although the insurance nazis of the world will likely want receipts for the add ons...good luck. Oh yeah, and expect much higher rates next year.

Sargent Seat - $300-$400 depending
Handlebar Risers - $100-$300 depending
K&N Filter ~ $50 (I think)

Hope this helps.

Check Ebay and other sites for "Parts" as some stupid theives have been caught that way!!

Wow, that sucks! Sorry to hear of your loss. Just curious, was the steering locked or did you have a disc lock on it?
I am thinking not, but I have heard of bikes being stolen even with a disc lock and the steering locked. I personally would like to see how someone can pull that off.
Many insurance companies uses NADA. Check out their website to get an idea of what they say your bike is worth. Just be prepared. They won't be giving you NADA "retail".... :(
Unfortunately, you will probably have to fight with Progressive. I used to be a Progressive claims adjuster and I had almost everyone fight me. I hated my job and having to "low ball" customers, so I quit after 9 months on the job. That was the worst job I ever had!

Man Sorry it's gone !
You easily have enough extra's to max out the $1000 add. coverage, I'll look your bike's value up shortly. It should bring top retail with those mile's and add's.

Current AMA/Blackbook show's Avg. Retail at $5130 and I would call your's better than avg. and say it was worth $5500 plus the add-on Max of $1000 bring it to a value of $6500. IMO !
Don't forget Chrome wheels are worth at least $600 too !

this sucks.

good luck with the insurance.

Wow so I guess I can expect to argue with the guy a little...

As for "expect much higher rates next year" can I ask as to why that would be?

My biggest problem is I don't have receits for my mods. The bike came used with the seat, exhaust, K&N, TMI, risers, chrome wheels. I added the heated grips but it was a christmas gift.

I hope they don't require receits best I can do is probablly a picture with themods on it (not a picture with the heated grips though).

Hope that $6500 is close. If so I shouldn't have any problems finding a replacement.

Disc lock and steering lock?!, That's easy! All you need is two big helpers and a van!

Oh yea I'm sure thats how they got it. I had the bars locked to the side. I would bet they just drove up and picked it up in a van or truck. And to think I'm moving into my new house in less than 60 days where it would have been safe in a locked garage.

More like two gorillas...
Often when you file any insurance claim, even if it wasn't your fault, your rates go up. It is a catch 22. It sucks, but that is the way it is....
You more than likely will need to show receipts if you want to be reimbursed. (unless Progressive has changed)
#12
My sympathies man. I just got mine and I sit here all day at work thinking about that same scenario playing out after work one night. Good luck in the search, and Slammer has the right idea with the ebay thing, Ive heard of that happening myself.
#13
Mine is locked in a shed, then locked to a concrete ancor, with a big cable around the front wheel. Steering locked too, narrow shed. I am sure some industrious theif could steal it but then they get a beat up 98 viffer.

Insurance is a total freaking scam as far as I am concerned. You pay money to have the ability to file a claim if necessary, then once you file a claim, you are considered a different risk level and so they raise your rates assuming you'll file another claim. So they gig you for actually using the service that you've already paid for...total freaking scam...catch 22 is exactly right!

My brother dropped my 03 that summer. I asked if my rates would go up if I filed a claim, and my agent said no since I wasn't riding the bike and the person who dropped it had a valid license. So even after paying the $500 deductible for the ~$2000 claim, my rates went up $150 / year the next year...I've since gotten better insurance.

Before you go out pricing new bikes remember this. They may find it and you may get it back. The insurance company is in no hurry to settle. They will wait 30-60 days before giving up the cash on a total loss for theft.

Very good point! That is right on. I forgot to mention that. ;)

I'm sure someone has some receipts for the aformentioned equpt that they are willing to copy, & perhaps email to our victimized brother B)

Insurance may not go up. I had FOUR claims from '02-'03 totaling over $22k combined. I made out on all of them just fine and my rates never went up. None were motorcycle claims but all were cage claims. I might also add that none were my fault. Thank you AIG Insurance!

Sanders.Chris@gmail.com

Sargent Seat
Heated Grips (2 wheel innovations)
Chrome Rims
Smoked Touring Windshield (unknown brand also)
Bar Risers (unknown brand)
TMI Fuel Injector Adjustor

thats all I can think of now. Nothing yet from the insurance except you are right they did say it would probablly take 3-4 weeks. Still waiting on the call from my actual adjuster.

Just a word of advice... (Take it for what it is worth.)

You may want to consider the possible repercussions for providing sales receipts to your insurance company that are not actually your own. I am not saying that your intentions are to defraud your insurance carrier, or that you are being untruthful in any way by providing them with receipts for products that were actually on your motorcycle. If you start sending them receipts with multiple names and shipping locations it may cause a few eyebrows to raise back at the home office, if you know what I mean. Nothing good can come of that!

The best advice for dealing with insurance companies in todays society: Be up front and honest about things. Don't try to work an angle or cut corners. If you bike was modified then you should have pictures of it, (your own) receipts for the mods, and any other proof of mods you may have to go with your claims. With the way that most federal and state governments approach insurance fraud these days it is too easy for insurance companies to red flag you and cause you unwanted and unneeded grief. I hope for your sake your interaction with your company regarding this claim is smooth and quick, but too often I have heard horror stories where it was not.

Again, good luck with it and keep us posted!

It may depend on the laws of the state. MI is no fault, but it doesn't apply to motorcycles. If you get into an accident with a cage, caused by the cage, the cages insurance is 100% responsible for EVERYTHING, which means the biker's insurance company pays zero. That may explain why you never got a rate increase. Then again, maybe AIG is just much better (read: honest) than State Farm.

I don't know how 'Bama works but here in God's country insurance does not go up from a comprehensive claim. :)
#24
Here in KY, they'll jack your a$$ fro filing a claim, even comprehensive. I had State Farm when we had a garage fire in Feb. of '04. My truck was partially parked IN the garage (I pulled it out) and took a very bit of paint damage to the top of the bed rails. The garage was a total loss. My streetbike (a '86 Yamaha Fazer), my race quad, a friends CBR900RR and another frineds Yamaha BigBear were all in the garage. Neither bike was even licensed. The RR was a rebuilder we had JUST finished putting back together and mine had been in a lowside and hadn't been ridden in a while. Neither was insured (I know, I know) on it's own. Even though the policy specifically said 'vehicles in deadstorage are not considered vehicles', they refused to cover either one. "Vehicles have to have their own policies. Not covered." "But you're policy says 'vehicles in dead... Neither one had a battery in it, or was liscensed. How much deader can you get?" "Nope. Sorry. Screw you." And then, when I have the nerve to actually file a claim on my truck, they cancelled me! Supposedly, the comp claim shouldn't have done it, but it did. Insurance agents and claims adjusters have a special place in hell, right beside parking ticket cops. They'll put the screws to you every friggin' time.
