OK...I am going to be adding a 00 Yellow VFR to my stable of a 03VTEC and ST1300. I run Two brothers on the ST and love the deep, somewhat loud rumble it produces and I run the Remus CF on the VTEC.
I need your help on what to get for the 00. Thanks.
I have a TwoBrothers on my '00 and it sounds great. Deep rumble is a good explinations, it may need repacking as it has 3K on it. I'll be doing that over the winter, time to ride is growing short.
Plenty of choices out there, there are probably a lot of sound files around here for the differing cans. Pick what you like best.
Staintune, never needs repacking. Sounds deep, looks awsome, and the install is easy. Taking the pipe out of the box is harder than installing the pipe on a 5th gen

All of the above can be said for the Scorpion that I use. Stainless steel, lifetime guarantee on can and packing.
I have a Staintune stainless hi-mount, Art Carbon hi-mount and Vance and Hines S4R Titanium lo-mount for Murphy. Haven't decided which one I like the best, but I've spent the most amount of time with the 'Tune so I will comment on that:
Finish - excellent Fit - excellent Sound - raspier than the others
The Staintune is a narrower and longer canister, which makes for a unique exhaust sound. I think the Erion is probably more like it than any other, but then again I've never heard one. It IS less boomy than something like the Micron Carbon Oval hi-mount veefer800canuck has on his fifth gen., which definitely has a deeper tone.
The one thing I really like about the Staintune aside from the fact it is a quality peice that will last the life of the bike is that it does not have a glaring "Exhaust by Gronk" emblem on the side. For me, it is more along the lines of what the rest of the bike is - a fine peice of work that doesn't have to shout "LOOK AT ME!!!"
I've looked at the Scorpion exhausts for the fifth generation and I like them as well since they share some of the same attributes of the Staintune. They are put together a little different but I have no doubt they are a well finished product and the Scorpion costs a fraction of what the Staintune does.
Used 'Tunes for fifth generation VFR's show up every now and again - I don't see any need to buy new unless you want to, or want it right away. Try posting a WTB notice in Classifieds and see what you get....
Of the Yosh race can, Two Brothers, Staintunes and Scorpion, which ones don't need re packing? Pro's and Con's with packing vs. not needing repacking? Any sound clips and photos out there?

Yosh and TBR use fiberglass packing material that needs to be replaced after a few seasons. Staintune and Scorpion use steel wool. It is possible to repack the Yosh and TBR with steel wool.
The Vance&Hines system is no longer available as far as I know.
Kerker made a nice unit but I don't know if they are still available - there is a local VFR owner with a lo-mount version. I like it - a little quieter and deeper than the Staintune.
If I'm not mistaken, Remus is also uses stainless steel wool and never needs repacking.
I had Yosh's Zyclone on my 4th gen and liked the sound and also had Twobros and liked the sound as well. It was louder than the Yosh, but nowhere near as loud as my 5th gen's Wolf system.
Vance & Hines had an issue with the clamp breaking and the can falling off.
Scorpion, Remus & Staintune never need repacking.
Nothing beats the Fit and Finish of Staintune.
D&D and Micron are up there for loud. Micron is more of a Deep rumble where as the D&D is just loud.
Termigoni & Ackrapovick make an Exhaust and boy are they ever sweet, But at about $750 a pop they where out of the ball park for me.
Yosh zyclone takes the quiet cake.
TBR's sound good at a medium volume (I've only heard a C5 carbon can).
Staintunes are slick with the spud, be loud with out it, or be quieter than stock with it. Very nice for riding with a passenger, etc...
Jardine, M4 and all of the other race purpose cans look horrid to me, very cheaply constructed.
The selling points of the staintune to me where the Brand Banner-less can, the ability to have the spud in or removed for different volumes, and no springs or clamps to deal with, bolts up just like the stock can.

Speaking of low and high mount, what are the pros and cons there? You guys are more than helpful so far. Thanks very much. If you have ever heard TBR on an ST1300 that is the sound I am looking for.
teleskier, Oct 21 2005, 01:22 PMSpeaking of low and high mount, what are the pros and cons there?
Hi-mounts are not compatible with some/all hard bag setups. I use a Ventura pack rack or a Givi rack I strap a tailpack to. Hi mounts show off the rear wheel a bit. I have never had a problem with passengers, as the muffler is tucked in under the passenger peg. Hi mounts give you enough cornering clearance to drag your earlobes tongue.gif
Lo-mounts allow you to use hard bags, or soft saddle bags.
I have a 2000 VFR with a TBR C4 (round) Titanium can on it. The TBR is a total piece of shit. It has leaked since day one, has about 2 inches of side to side play at the end of the can, doesn't fit worth a shit (had to file away on the bottom of the foot peg for about a hour until it didn't rub on the can), the band around the muffler is too big (possible contributing to the end play) & my personal favorite... the aluminum end caps on the can corroded from normal washes. I contacted TBR and inquired about warranty issues and they very rudely told me that since I purchased it from the internet (starcycle.com) they would not honor the warranty, then they hung up on me. I wouldn't recommend TBR products to anyone.
Based on the research I've done, I ordered a Scorpion CF can today. It's supposed to be here next Wednesday.

I found Ackrapovic CF for $540. is that a good price on them? What is the sound like?
I got my Art Pro II Carbon Fiber lo-mount from Dennis Kirk on eBay for $149 brand new. Stainless steel internals, too. Can't beat that, and it sounds good - quieter than the Staintune with less bark on top and a wonderful deep resonance on deceleration. It will definitely be the pipe I use for longer trips.
Got some pics I can post in a few days (sorry to keep you waiting...)
-2bros is over priced -Akrapovick cans look good, but $$$ and I do not know what they sound like. -Yosh is slipping fast in my eyes, quality is on the outs. -Remus cans are nice, but only heard a 6th gen, sounded good though. Plus stainless internals. -Everyone complains about the Microns for being very difficult to install and not well constructed. Sound is deep, but loud.
Why do you dislike the staintune. There was a high mount in the F/S section here about a week ago. I'll admit they aren't as deep as the rest, but the craftsmanship makes up for that. Nothing sounds more different than a VFR will Gears a wining and Tunes a singing.
Two reasons for not really wanting Staintune. One is they are not black. Second is they are too long and narrow. I saw one in person last weekend on a 99 and thought it was hideous.

I agree with that to an extent, did you see a high mount or a low mount. I have a Low mount and with the small diameter can, you still show off the rear wheel much more and don't sacrifice the ability to carry bags. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that the remus cans are similar to the staintune. If you want short and large diameter, go for the micron. Just figure out how to get their hideous billboard off the side of the can. But you are going to fight that with any can other than a Staintune or a supertrap. If memory serves the Remus CF cans are more of a grey/silver color rather than black.

Staintune also makes a carbon fiber version, which I have on my '00. Very smooth sound, like a small block chevy taking off when you're getting on it, but you can still hear the gears whining until its really wound up. For me that is part of what makes the 5th generation special. The exhaust note is very mellow until you want it to bark, then it barks nicely. And it really looks cool on the bike.
I put a D&D on my yellow 2000. It sounds awesome. It took a couple weeks for it to break in, but now it roars. I got it from motorcyclesuperstore.com. I'd read some good reviews about it, and it wasn't nearly so expensive as the staintunes or two brothers. Indeed, the $230USD I spent on it @ motorcyclesuperstore was less than buying it directly from the manufacturer.
OK...I finally made up my mind..sort of. I purchased a Scorpion Carbon Fiber low mount for $340. I figure that way I can use luggage if I choose to take the yellow bike instead of the red one or blue one. I hope they sound good but with a wrnty, like Scorpion has, lifetime plus they will give you 50% of purchase price toward another set if you crash or otherwise ruin them. Not bad.
[QUOTE]Vance & Hines had an issue with the clamp breaking and the can falling off.
Yep, that happened to me, except the can stayed on the bike, it just drooped down about 3 inches. I took a rag that I carry for cleaning my face shield and tied it up. Went to Home depot and got a large hose clamp and did a temp fix. I ordered a replacement part from V & H, got it for $32 including shipping. I then took the bad part to a friend who does welding and he repaired it better than new. I originally got the exhaust off of Ebay for $103, if I ever feel the need to replace it I am thinking Staintune Lo mount.
I just received my Scorpion Carbon Fiber can from Mr. UPS man. Someone emailed me and asked if it came with the mid pipe. Yes, it does in fact come with the mid pipe or whatever they are called these days. Everything in the box looks great, the can, the mid pipe & hardware. One thing worth mentioning: The packaging this kit comes in is the best I've ever seen. My TBR came in a cardboard box with all the hardware rolling around in the bottom and the can itself wasn't even wrapped. The Scorpion comes in a box with a suitcase handle on the side. Every component has it's own separate inner box and everything is bubble wrapped. The can even has tissue paper under the bubble wrap. It even comes with a dyno sheet suggesting 7 HP over stock. So far, this thing gets a 10 out of 10 easy.
I don't mind the way my bike sounds with the TBR pipe but it's nothing to get worked up over. The inner core of the Scorpion can looks about 1.5X the size of the TBR so it should be slightly louder.
CF Scorpion VS Titanium TBR
S = SS end-caps -- TBR = aluminium end-caps
S = spacer to locate pipe off the passenger peg -- TBR = muffler clamp rests on the foot peg, had to file the bottom of the foot peg off to get it to fit
S = SS wool mesh packing never needs service -- TBR = fiberglass packing
S = CF can not as durable as titanium but looks better -- TBR titanium can will probably out last the bike. To bad the end caps are corroded already after only 4 years
& to add insult to injury...
S = $350 delivered -- TBR $360 + $20 for shipping.
No contest thus far, the Scorpion is the better product.
I'm leaving tomorrow morning for 5 days. As soon as I get back, on it goes.
Another update to follow after installation... wheel.gif
teleskier, Oct 20 2005, 10:11 PMhow about experience with M4, Jardine or Vance&Hines? anyone running those and care to comment? I saw them on the AZ motorsports site.
Stay away from the Vance and Hines. Their mounting bracket for the S4 is its weakest link. I have had four different mounting brackets break, the last one resulted in the cannister departing from the bike at 80mph on the I-5N.
Since then, I have switched to the Remus Grand Prix high-mount and have not looked back. It has a very robust and strong mounting system, and being stainless is also a very good thing.
I just installed my new Scorpion slip-on today. It looks & sounds great. Except for a minor leak, which incedently is in the exact same location as the leak on my TBR pipe, I am more than satisfied with this modification. Another update to follow as soon as I road test it.
well my yellow 00 arrives tomorrow so the exhaust will be put on tomorrow night. I notice in the scorpion literature it suggests using silicone to avoid all possilbe air leaks. Any suggestions here as to type and brand?
I asked the same question about the silicone/sealant/rtv in the "Questions" forum. No one answered... Aparently, some sort of Voodoo or Witchcraft is necessary to get an answer on a VFR forum. I ran into the same problem on VFRWORLD.COM...

Permatex Copper Hi temp silicone is what I have always used in the past with excellent results... wink.gif
Finally got to road test my new Scorpion pipe. I definitely give it an enthusiastic fing02.gif . The leak went away on its own. I was adjusting the can so it sat straight up & down and in the process, I moved the clamp all the way to the end of the muffler inlet. PPRESTO... No more leak.
Few more comparison points:
Scorpion -- SS band clamp to hold the muffler onto the mid pipe. TBR -- POS rubber covered springs. (the rubber rotted out in 4 years I discovered when I removed the whole thing)
Scoprion -- Sounds great, much akin to a V8 car. TBR -- Sounds OK I guess... A little raspy on the top end of the revs.
After all is said & done, I give this product a 9.5 out of 10. I would give it a 10 out of 10 but I noticed a blemish in the CF. I called Scorpion and they said they would give me a new can if I really wanted one. The blemish isn't really that bad & you can't see it unless you're like 2 feet from it.
teleskier, Nov 9 2005, 08:06 PMyeah mine had a blemish too but I'm not worrying about. I too would give them 9.5 of 10. See my pics in a seperate post.
What thread are your pics in? Did you use the spacer on the foot peg? I put the spacer on the inside of the footpeg between the peg and the band clamp around the muffler.
I did not use the spacer at all. To be honest I could not figure out that it made any difference to use it or not. Here is a pic from my other thread for you. [image: user posted image] DSC_0006.JPG
teleskier, Nov 10 2005, 01:01 AMI could not figure out that it made any difference to use it or not.
I was able to mount the can exactly vertically with use of the spacer & it was slightly off without it. Your bike looks basically like mine save a few minor details.
Good choice with the Staintune. I am aghast at those who don't like the aesthetics of the Staintune. I suppose that a 427 Cobra with side pipes is hideous as well?
I am enjoying the Wolf underseat currently, but if I had to choose between the Wolf and the Staintune based totally on sound quality...I would have to choose the Staintune.
No kidding.
