This is for you 6th gen. VFR owners. I'm one of those folks who likes the look of the stock pipes, so I drilled them out. There have been lots of interesting suggestions about how to do it here, but only loose reference to the exact tools. If you have a drill (and I recommend an electric one), get these two items. Both were bought for just under $20 at Home Depot. Two of the pipes are straight shots, so insert the bit as far as it goes and drill away. The other two pipes have a bend, so you will have to drill at an angle. The beauty of the bit is that, for the angled drill holes, it chews away at the pipe without having to worry about starting a pilot hole, scratching the visible outlet portion of the pipe, etc. The bit is by eazypower and is called an Isomax countersink, 5/8". The extension is an Irwin Speedbor, 12" long. Both are virtually indestructible. Happy drilling!

This might sound dumb, but... did you do this while the exhaust was still mounted? All the gutting threads I have read referrence taking off the back plate tips and rewelding them back on.

If they were still mounted, how did you get the shavings out? Pics of the process?

I left the pipes on and let the shavings "go where they go." The bit also collects some shavings because I think it is somewhat magnetized. Nothing's going to get back into places where it could do damage. I few aggressive revs on the road clean it out, I'm sure. This is quick and easy. If you have an electric drill, takes about 5 minutes. I had to use my battery-powered Makita. I went through about 8 battery chargings. Hope this helps.

I doubt any of that stuff will make it past the catalytic converter...

Make sure to :goofy: to get the shavings out :blink:

There's no way that the vacuum would pull it all the way to the cylinders. Even if it could pull it through a clean open pipe that far, the stuff couldn't get past the catalytic converter.

Travis - thanks for keeping that - I forgot I made that short clip. I have to say that after putting about 4,ooo kms on the gutted pipes, I absolutely love the sound. Its not obnoxious, but it is noticeable. NO rattles, not tinny sound - just deep growling, soothing small block chevy with a cam kind of sound. I love the result of the full gut treatment.

Travis, thanks for posting those sound clips. I already have the pipes drilled at an angle, I wonder what 4 more holes straight in would sound like, maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of full gutted?

Axplayer, your method certainly does sound easiest, wonder if there is a noticeable difference in sound between drilling in the two locations.

Ok. Started with 4 holes. 2 straight through, and 2 in the bend. Decided to go for more. The holes in the bend, I reamed, then went all the way to the back. USE CAUTION, to not lose the counter bore, in the exhaust. (Little at a time, folks). MUCH better!

The holes in the bend were drilled by allowing the bit to sort of chew through the metal a little at a time. The straight shots were easy, but the bends took a while. The result was four holes of about the same size. It has a nice little growl now, not too obnoxious, although my wife says "it used to be so quiet...."

I've had a few P.M.s, in reguards to how far in to drill. I guess a picture is worth a thousand words, the unfortunate thing is, getting a pic of it is not going to happen with the camera I own. The best starting point is here,

To understand the configuration of the exhaust is your best bet, before attempting this.

You'll know when your through the chamber, (on the straight pipes), when you see the flash protectors, (grate), as shown in Kanadian Ken's 5th pic. You'll know when the drill is about to go through to full diameter, as it will, "bite", a lot harder.

This is when you want to slow the drill's rpm, and not push hard, on the drill. (As it will "pop" through. The hole you just made will cool, shrink, and you'll have one heck of a time trying to pull it back out, without losing the counterbore in your exhaust).

If you go easy, before coming to full diameter, when it does go through, you will get a bit of reaming, making the hole, less tight on the counterbore, thus making the counterbore easy to remove.

On the bent pipes, you are more or less going to poke a small hole in them, then ream them out, at an angle. YOU MUST BE SURE THAT YOU ARE REAMING STRAIGHT BACK, or you'll never get the 5th and 6th holes right, and the cursing will start. After you get that, the 5th and 6th holes are the same as doing the straight pipes.

Sorry for the ramble. When it comes to words, I'm not very articulate. If you don't understand a word I've said, have a friend help. Best I can offer, without a video how-to. Perhaps one of the local riders will want to do this, in the near future, and I'll make and edit a video to post.

K.C.This has been discussed many times. I'm glad to see it's been pinned since so many of the previous threads have been deleted.

I drilled mine with a long 5/8" bit that cost $12.99 at Home Depot, same effect and less money.

Another dumb question? Approximately how deep into the straight pipes do you find the bits that need drilling, and do you angle the drill bit down the curved pipes, or do you just drill straight in?

'Bout 11 inches. Drill at an angle, until it starts to bite, then straighten it out.

here a tip... get a auto matic center punch to make a dimple where you want to drill.. putt lots of greese in THE GROVE OF THE BIT!!! it will trap and hold alot of the shavings..

I would recommend using a quality cutting fluid, like Castrol Moly-Dee for example. It doesn't smell too pleasant(lots of sulfur), but it works well. It makes the drill's job easier, and extends the life of the bit. Excellent for use on steel! :thumbsup:

the problem with cutting oil.. it will not trap the shavings.. and if you are drilling from the side or bottom it runs down ,away from the hole..if the bit gets dull take it to your pal with a drill dr. :P

Hey I was this wonderful writeup and decided to Make it Growl for 20 dollars. Anyways the straight shots were a piece of cake, its just the angled pipes I just cannot get the surface I am looking for to drill. What exactly am I suppossed to do - no matter what angle or position I have the drill I get caught up on the bend

I bought the Craftsman 1/2" x 18" drill bit from Sears and just went straight in through all 4 holes. The bent tubes took a little longer because I had to let the one side of the tip work on the tube wall. Once it started going through the wall, it would get stuck if I tried to just push through, so I still had to let it work slowly straight in.

I didn't hit any other walls with the bit all the way in, but what a great sound!

When I first cranked it up, I positioned a magnetic sheet behind the exhaust and it caught all kinds of shavings! With each rev, more shavings flew out, so I kept everyone away from the rear until it was clear.

I still sometimes think that someone is right behind me (then I realize it's just me, LOL). :lol:

What the **^$( I did this,,, the first straight one went fine, The second was the angled and I BROKE THE DRILL BIT OFF IN THE PIPE... I can't get it out, I hope it doesn't missle-launch out of there and hurt someone one day. I stopped after that and still no noticeable difference/improvement to sound - D A R N !!!!

I dunno if you've solved this problem with them thar new-fangled VTEC Viffers, but ISTR that when I--er, some fool I know--drilled his '90 FL's OEM muffler it sounded right crap. Suspiciously like a drilled OEM exhaust can, actually. Can't hide that distinctive "I'm too cheap to buy a real end can" sound, I'm afraid....

(Yep, faced with that all-too-obvious situation, I--er, some fool I know--soon purchased a gen-u-ine TBR slip-on and was soon in V4 heaven!)

Best $20 I ever spent! I didn't want to swap my stock exhaust either, but wanted more growl....I got it with a $17 craftsman drill bit. Smoked my cheap hitachi drill though! Oh well. I even did it with the caps on, didn't take anything off. I'm pleased with that mod and the map from cozye that i modded for the 06. I sent it to him so he could check it out, if anyone wants to try it out just drop me a line with your email address. Don't want to post it without it actually being dyno'd....it's a smooth vtec transition though! :thumbsup:

I really really want to try this mod.. it makes the Viffer sound awesome.

Can anyone post any pics of where to drill the holes from the perspective of the cans still on the bike. I'm scared I'm literally going to screw it up.

So if i'm reading this correctly, you just stuck a drill bit through the tail-pipe and drilled away anything in your path? (except the outside of the muffler lol). One on each side will just be drilling straight back, and the other one you'll just be forced to go at an angle and then just dirll away from there?

I drilled mine yesterday. It did cost less than $20 and took about 20 minutes and 1 beer. I listened to the exhaust before I started and as I drilled each pipe. After hearing the change from drilling the first one, I knew I had to punch a hole in the other 3. It sounds great and was easy--just don't lose your countersink in the pipe! The drilling process knocked out both allen head screws that hold the countersink in the extension. I got lucky that this happened in the top left (angled) pipe. I was able to use one of those flexible grabber things and pull it out, and used a magnet to remove the broken allen head screw.

Since it was cold & raining I didn't get to take it out and see if there was any difference in performance. I recommend making this mod if you don't have a lot of $ or time.

Most dealer wrenches, are dolts. (No dis. to the wrenchers, here). It prolly would. I don't know. But I can tell you most of them won't know, if you don't tell.

I don't know, (again). But are you sure? Not try'n to be an a$$. Figure an aftermarket would be no problem, but altering stock? Wouldn't one get flack from a dealer if stuff went wrong? Didn't one member run into flack, after gutt'n, then his cat loaded-up, and the bike burst into flames? Serious questions. Not being sarcastic. Didn't he get flack, from the dealer?

I drilled the pipes out on my bike, and I dont really think that it made an incredible difference, I did not do a full gut though.

I have heard a stock, drilled and gutted sise by side. The drilled pipes are only a little louder than stock. Not a big improvement IMO.

Drilling will not effect warranty. Just dont tell them. Besides you wont have any engine problems that have anything to do with the exhaust. You wont have any engine problems at all. I did wait until my warranty expired to gut mine.

So I bought the Micron Ti slip-ons and now my friend is telling me that I need to have a Honda dealer install them, or (you guessed it) it'll void the warranty. Any truth to this, or should I put them on myself?

Is it as simply as sticking the bit through the end of the exhaust and drilling through the part of the pipe that the bit hits?

A member from VFRworld helped me do this mod to my bike. Instead of drilling, we cut off the end of the pipe with a angle grinder, then pulled out the baffles with a bit of tugging. Then we welded it back up and wallah!

It sounds like a badass ducati. Its loud enough to be heard, but not loud enough to scream pull me over.

i was trying to listen to the sound clip of the drilled out exhaust compared to the full gut. i just did the drill mod yesterday and am considering the full gut. i do not want it to be really loud. please if anyone has a sound clip of both these mods side by side...please post them.

ok so the first one, was that the stock exhaust sound.

the second one it says drilled 6 holes...not clear as to what you did ...can you link me to the post where you explain or show how you gutted it because it sounds good.

ah now i see...that was the post that inspired me to want to gut my exhaust in the first place...and the one that makes me want to black the whole thing out...i am waiting on a friend to get his painting equipment and i will then transform my red white and blu to a completely blacked out bike. i am gonna black out everything that i can hit with a spray gun. i am going with the roadwarrior style of matte black.

From 1 exhaust i remove everyfing exept 1 main big sieve, from second exhaust i don't remove anything but i cut the 2 pipes that go outside the exhaust ,so the gas don't return inside the exhaust chamber and then return outside.

Being somewhat of a VFR/motorcycle novice (I've only been riding for about a year), can someone send to me or post on here more details/pictures of exactly where these drill holes are meant to be made (straight and bend??)? It would really help me out and for those who may not, like myself, be great with working on machines, etc.

Hello all,

Very novice to the motorcycle world as I've only been riding my VFR for nearly a year now. This mod sounds great but I'm a little confused about where one should drill these holes out (straight and bend??). Can someone please explain in the simplest terms or pics possible. It would be quite helpful. Thanks all.

I'm a little late to this thread but hey, just joined. Here's my $70 exhaust, including custom bent and soldered elbow;

It's a knockoff of a Magnaflow "bullet", made for ricer posers, light and straight, less than 1in. packing between the chromed wall and the inner screen. Gotta love cheap and good stuff from cars that fit bikes!.

I really like the sound, below 3k rpm it has this subsonic baritone, then after it just growls and growls.

So I read through this whole thread and dont see many cons to running a gutted exhaust.

Are there any cons to running a gutted exhaust? Like does it F with back pressure? Which could cause a power drop, also I noticed a comment about the cat clogging up and some one bike catching on fire....

How many miles do you all have on your 6th gen gutted exhaust and have you experienced any issues?

Just not looking to hose my junk up by swapping stock exhaust to a full gut.

I was able to snag a fully gutted stock exhaust from a member here (pick it up Thursday). I love the sound (I just came off a V-Star 1100 with a full Cobra exhaust) so i doubt the full gut will be any where near as loud as I'm used to. I just want to know of any possible negatives to running a a gutted exhaust over time, as I plan on putting about 15,000 miles a year on this bike.

I did this mod today by drilling holes in the exhaust. Buy a 1/2" bit, 12" long. Stick it as far down each exhaust outlet as you can. Drill till it goes through. Bit cost $15. The $10 one I tried was a piece of shit and the tip broke, so don't cheap out on the bit.

The improvement in sound is nice. Subtle but worth $15 and 15 minutes for sure.

None of the images and vids work on the thread any more :( do we just stick the drill right up through the hole in the exhaust and drill away?

Roughly what all location do we drill like 12 o clock 3 , 5 7 9 like that? What's the bend pipe and straight one ?

Complete mechanical noob here, just saw this thread after researching the other gutting One for hours :)

Gonna go ahead and drill the holes this weekend, any advice much appreciated. If I mess up might go ahead and get delk exhaust

Only reason going for this is to get good sound for the videos, and to keep the stock exhaust look

This post should help you understand what your drilling into. The drawing of the baffle design shows a wall to the left of the 2 outlet pipes. I think that wall is what your drilling into to open up the fist chamber

This post should help you understand what your drilling into. The drawing of the baffle design shows a wall to the left of the 2 outlet pipes. I think that wall is what your drilling into to open up the fist chamber

The way I understand it stick the drill into the pipes & drill only the first wall you hit. If you look at the drawing of the chambers your opening up the first chamber. I'm also thinking of doing it. Just need to get to homedepot

I attempted this mod but couldn't find an extension that fit down the bent pipe. So I spent $10 & got a pack of cut off wheels & a 1" hole saw. I did the partial gut I think, cutting the little pipes about 1" back. I didn't take the exhaust off or any of the trim. It sounds awesome!! Nice & throaty, no backfires or rattles. IMO it sounds like vid clips of the 2 brothers. I tried using my phone to record but it distorts the hell out of it.

So.. let me get this straight...

1. Holesaw on extension with electric drill...

2. Insert holesaw into 1 of the 4 outlets in the ehxuast...

3. Once you hit the back, start drilling...

4. Repeat for all 4 holes...

5. Ensure all drilled plates came out of the exhaust...

6. Start bike, stand clear, rev to remove debris...

7. Ride and enjoy...

Really??? That's it??? I may have to do this when the wife goes to work...

Okay, so I finally did this mod.

1. Used the counter-sink bit... only easier way would've been to use a small cut-off wheel in there. The angled pipe is a real pig to get through.

2. Took 3 battery charges on brand new Craftsmas cordless.

3. Broke my Bosch 12" extension... the drill got so hot (even with oiling it) that it warped the aluminum clips holding the bit in place. As I extracted the extension from the can my bit and both pieces of the lock fell off right at the back of the can... luckilly it happened there where I could get everything out with a long set of needle-nose pliers. Any deeper and I would've been screwed.

4. I did drill the 6 hole version... through both bent tubes and 2 in each backer plate at the back of the second chamber.

I also removed the snorkle and disabled the flapper valve.

Holy crap is the bike nice and smooth now. Not obnoxiously loud, not even noticibely much louder from a rider's position. But down at idle it's much more throaty.

All in all, for 20 bucks and an afternoon... not a bad little mod.

"Make It Growl" was the best 20 minutes spent drilling and cutting off sections of the two straight pipes (wanted only a 2.5 chamber exhaust) to get a deeper sound out of the sewing machine stock exhaust. Many mental horsepowers were added.

.....and then there was the 2.5 hours spent futzing around fishing, yanking, dropping, fishing, yanking, dropping, fishing some more and then finally cutting out one of the pipe sections that dropped inside and would NOT otherwise come out.

Highly recommend this mod - cheap, (can be) quick, and not too loud. If you can't justify a slip-on system this is a very close second. Just be sure not to drop the cut off section before it's out of the muffler!

Does anyone know if this thread has been reposted anywhere with working links? Have just spent 2 days remanufacturing the rusted joint from tailpipes to cat, so much do I want to try a version of this mod on the lovely-looking (but sadly Vespa-fart sounding) factory cans of my '05 VTEC. Whilst my dubious DIY TIG skills are acceptable for the unseen clamp joint, I'm hesitant to risk them on a full gutting (yet!)

I know this thread is super old, but i thought i might help someone. I did the simple drawing (using my sick paint skills, lol) showing both mods: The drilling and gutting. Please bare in mind that i haven´ t mod my exhaust yet so i can´t comment on the results.

If anyone can confirm the make it growl mod - do you drill straight through the bent pipe opening it up to the third chamber and drill the back wall through the hole in the pipe? Or do you force the drill bit to bore the pipe sleightly to make it easier for the bit to follow the bend leaving the pipe walls intact? I will drill mine at some point and try to make a comparison audio clips. The ones on this thread won´t work anymore. If anyone still has them - let us know. Hope they might help someone.

So, i drilled out the bent pipes on my bike today. Sure was pretty pain in the a... to do it. I used a 16mm drill bit and heavy-duty drill. It now has a nice mellow growl on idle. Sounds really good. Its not any louder than the stock exhaust. It sounds similar to the arrow exhaust i had before. Im going to use a dremel later on to make the holes a bit cleaner. Just didnt have the time today. I didnt have the countersink so i left the straight pipes alone for now.

Don't know how well my S8 picks up the sound, but still. Its not a huge difference compared to the stock, but there's definitely a mellow growling on idle which wasn't there before. I didn't want really loud or throaty exhaust, just add some juice to the sound and that's exactly what i got. Firstly i'll clean up the holes and see how it sounds then. I might drill the rest of the pipes too. All in all, i'm really happy. Hope this info might help someone who's considering about doing it.
