Before I got my VFR800, I thought I wanted a set of these highmount shotgun pipes. Either these Devil ones, or also Indigo Sports used to make a set that looked just about the same. I finally came to the conclusion after staring at them for a very very long time that they just looked too "heavy" for the bike and didn't show off enough of the rear wheel.
Maybe if someone had made a twin muffler system with one standard sized can on each side instead of the small dual over/under shotgun cans only on the right....
But when I got my bike, it already had the Micron highmount carbon on it, and I really like the pipe now. I wouldn't get rid of it unless I could somehow add another one to the other side as mentioned above.
I would be interested in hearing the double shotgun pipes though, just for kicks. I hope I run across a Viffer so equipped someday.
What I really don't like about these Devils is the way the upper can takes it's pipe off the other one near the passenger footpeg, angling off the straight pipe to the lower can. I'd prefer to see an arrangement where they Y off in an equal fashion, just above the centerstand, immediately past where the slipon clamps to the OE header outlet. Of course, you'd have to maintain ground clearance and centerstand height, etc. I just think it would look more "balanced" that way whereas here it sorta looks like they added the top can like an afterthought.
My dream pipes would be the wolf underseat system. I have heard of a few quality problems with them but they just look so sweet. Unfortunately they are not produced any more sad.gif
I always thought it strsnge that the 1st gen RC45 had dual canisters from the headrs on the left side, so why not?
I have a Remus system from an Aprilia Mille that is 2 canisters on the right side that have a opening right at the collector box for my 93 and would fit the ring connector perfectly. Another project, especially if I can get some carbon covers that are 3" ID by 19" long to recover and repack them and seal the little leaks around the rivets holes. idea3.gif
Just an idea, but I like them, they are just too high for my hard bags. But if I could get them to swaop fast, why not 2 sets?
chonsey, Nov 20 2005, 11:54 AMWhat is the purpose of having the two stacked pipe set up? Does it allow the engine to breath more, thus increasing the horse power?
I doubt it would make any more power than a single exhaust. Mostly it just looks different.
Racebikes like the RC45 and RC51 would use different exhaust setups for different tracks, a single can when they needed more high-RPM power, and a dual canister setup for more midrange, but the power characteristics were more a result of the header pipe orientation/combination, not the number of mufflers. The number of mufflers were more a result of the header plumbing necessitating that particular design.
Personally, I never liked the shotgun pipes, but can appreciate the nostalgic look of a left exit shotgun on a VFR.... dry.gif
Still, it's my least favorite exhaust configuration... no offense to you shotgun owners, as I'm sure things like my Givi setup leave you laughing... laugh.gif
Knew a guy with duals on a 94-97 VFR, sounded like a small block camaro with flowmasters. Real sweet rumble, gava more deep throaty bark tham a single can.
How about a system like this; the MHP dual canister exhaust shown below is the type that mounts with a single can on each side of the bike (as opposed to the dual stack type). This system is designed for the NC35 (RVF400) but I am sure one could fabricate something similar for a VFR750/800

vfrrider, Dec 17 2005, 11:52 AMYeah, you could fab up a system like the VFR400, but our bikes use a 180 crank, so the cylinders are paired front to back.
Easy way to do this is cut the final 2 into 1 below the engine and take the pipes out separately.
It would look just like every other sport bike. idea3.gif
But, again, anything can be done, with enongh thought, time and money.
Go for it and let us see the end product.

Nah, I really don't care for the dual exhaust like the MHP, I showed it as just another option someone could do if they wanted to. I have ordered a TYGA Full Race System for my soon to be shipped NC35. fing02.gif

That dual exhaust looks out of place. Not my cup of tea. I still like the laser pipes best like Scootr has. I don't know how functional they are, but damn they look good.

Arrgh, why can't I find someone who can do quality exhaust work like this on a one-off basis? I'd pay by the hour plus materials for someone with this kind of talent. pissed.gif
SAFE-T, Dec 17 2005, 03:18 PMApparently there is a guy in Edmonton who does really good mandrel work. He started out doing sleds but has moved into pipes for bikes, too.
I'll see if I can get his contact info., but you might be able to find him through Cycle Works or Echo Cycle. The guy's name is Neil.
Reeeealllly? Yes please. I'm thinking about a matching CF Micron can on the LH side of the tailsection. I like the balanced look of duals.
I like the Devilish double pipes. I like the 4 pipes at the back laser thing too. I'm not sure I'd want to mess with the Medusa-like header pipes though. biggrin.gif
veefer800canuck, Dec 19 2005, 06:16 PMAdmit it, you liked Sarah more than you liked her cans. Er, pipes, I mean mufflers, exhaust, something.......... 3.gif

If you're going to do anything but a high-mount pipe (right or left), underseat is definitely the best-looking option IMO. The Wolf system *does* have its problems, but I think it's worth it. fing02.gif Even though Wolf no longer makes the system, I think it would be a relatively easy system to copy if you can locate a competent fabricator who's experienced with stainless. The biggest challenge is the underseat tray to replace the fender.
The Phantom's setup is the best I've seen (What happened to the pics, Phantom ?), including Wolf's version.

Thanks, and uhh, I am a bit slack when it comes to documenting my work... need to take some tips from HS and Rob Mc...
I will endeavour to get some good pics showing the current state of play, Xmas will probably get in the way so look for a Check*This*Out post early in the New Year (the bike is supposed to be roadworthy by Feb 2006).
i am curious Phantom.. the indigo system..was that special ordered?? I was checking their site at Indigo and it gave only reference to slip-ons for the 6th gen. In fact, I was trying to search a bit to see if they were listing any other full systems but could not come across any... Info on that system please... Thanks a lot...
Was checking out the pics from OZ...very cool... cool.gif

veefer800canuck, Dec 20 2005, 12:37 PMAgain, long out of production. sad.gif
Unfortunately so. I only landed it earlier this year - brand new and never fitted to a bike. The seller had three of them at the time (all unused), two were immediately spoken for, and I have been unable to account for the third... if I do turn it up it's already got dibs on it (person who PM'd me back then is still top of the list).
Keep an eye and ear out, things like this will continue to turn up. Most VFR owners have not normally been the types to modify their bikes, so I've no doubt that there are still many unappreciated treasures out there...
