I have been out in the garage stripping my rims. Like in HS tutorial I left the tires on. I am just stripping the outer smooth surface, leaving the spokes and rough parts black for now. Just to see how it looks.
My question is this. Obviously there is going to be some stripper getting to the tire by the bead no matter how careful one is. Will this soften or eat away the rubber? I don't want to be taking some corner and have my tire come off ya know?
Just wash it thoroughly - that's what I did. I *did* put masking tape round my tyres first though, and put vaseline or summat (can't remember now) where I missed bits, but in hindsight, it was a waste of time and effort.
One thing to note is that when you next have your tyres (or tires, or tahrrs) changed, you'll have some messy bits under the tyre beads, where the stripper didn't reach. The tyre technician kindly cleaned these off for me, at no charge.
Next time, I'll either strip my rims when the tyres need changing, or get the tyres removed and replaced. It would be much easier.
Not that there aren't a few already, but post pics when have finished your process.. The more pics the more it pushes me to do this. I have always liked the polished lip look and have been very close to doing this. Thanks....

The stripper should not harm the tire rubber.. but, call the manufacterer t'morrow of either the stripper or the tire rubber, and I would assume they could easily answer what chemicals affect and which ones do not... Good Luck.. beer.gif
OK..here are a couple of pics. Granted it is not on the bike as I am thinking of stripping more areas. I wanted to do a little at a time. If anyone has pics of their rims with the black and polished look, please post so I can get other ideas.
One of the things that has kept me from doing this on the outer edges (polished part) as you have done, is that I am afraid that the paint edge left on the center part won't have a clean edge. I love the look of the rims being polished on the outer parts of the rim and leaving the centers painted. I just can't convince myself that I will leave a clean edge.
the only part that was not real clean was on the backside of the rim where the polished edge meets the rough surface and it was not uniformly straight if that makes sense. The bottom of the spokes was not "perfect" but certainly acceptable.
Whoops.. I scanned back up to bid farewell and good night to my newfound stripper friends, and BAM...there were pics of wheels in that post...
hmmmm... They look sharp... I was hoping to see the front as well... Although, I am a bit curious on what the backside of that rear wheel looks like. I am gonna run out to the garage and check out the back side and make sense of the rough to smooth border you mentioned.... wink.gif
well I sure don't know how the rest of you made it so easy to use stripper on your wheels. My paint is like a rock and I know for darn sure I don't want to tackle the nooks and crannies. No stripper I have tried will "cook", flake or otherwise remove this paint. It barely softens it to scrape it off. So today I resolved myself, since I have no one within an 8 hour drive that can dip my rims, that I am going to blast and powdercoat. Even the bead blasting took FOREVER and its still not all off of the back of the rim.
Then to top it off, my local powder coater, said it could take 2-3 weeks for me to get one rim back.
Any color suggestions for the fastest yellow VFR? I was thinking of chrome smoke like a pic I saw posted on here not long ago.

If you decide to powdercoat them, take a look at my post: My Wheels The guy I used will do them for $100 which includes stripping, powdercoating, and putting clear coat on them. Just pull out your valve stems and wheel bearings. He can do just about any color you want, but has black, silver, and a few basic colors on hand.
Take a look at Columbia Coatings web site. This is where he gets all of his stuff. They have some cool looking "mirror black" and "black chrome" colors. He may charge a little more for special order colors, but he would definitely be fair on the price.
Wow!! That sounds like a great price... After looking through Columbia Coatings website, i am getting those "Gotta find something to powdercoat" jitters...
Hmmmm.... Can I powdercoat my dog?? I think she would look good with a nice set of super Mirror Black ears... tongue.gif
Not sure if you knew this but as you mentioned you had a hard time getting the factory paint of?f well I too had that problem . Well problem solved, get the stuff Eastwood makes, called DeKote. took 4 applications but never used not,not all that bad to use sorta like yogurt doesn't have that knock you out smell either, great stuff, Highly recommended.

I don't know that I would say it was "easy"; it did take some hard work and lotsa elbow grease. But the stripper certainly worked OK, even if it did require a few applications. Took me most of a day to do both wheels.
The old VFRWorld web site has a great section on stripping wheels. Even gives recommendations on the brand stripper to use (the kind with the airplane on the can) lots of pix too.
Here is what I used and I think this is what fuldogg is referring to. It only took one coat and it bubbled up nicely and wiped off with a damp sponge. I also did the outer edge of my spokes in the rear. See Gallery. Hope this helps.

Looks pretty clean skier. If I decide to strip my lips, is there something I have to treat the metal with to keep it from rusting, and to keep the paint from chipping?

Of course... I knew that.... What do you take me for?.... Has anybody who has left their rims like this had any problems with the paint chipping at the edge?
I tried Jasco, Airplane stripper and a brand I used to sell that is stronger than Jasco and no luck with any of them. I sure wish I could have wiped it off with a sponge like some else mentioned. I spend 6 hours on one wheel and it was only half done.
