VFR Discussion Group -> What's the loudest exhaust for a sixth gen?

So I'm wondering, what exhaust puts out the most decibels, outside of the Lasers?

It's not the Staintunes, mine are pretty mellow. In a very nice hot rod sort of way biggrin.gif I did run my bike with no exhaust from the cat on, and it was really loud, but pretty cool. I think that my neighbors did not like it at all though.

With or without the baffles?

I took my baffles out right away... I can't imagine anyone needing them, unless you have some REALLY pissy neighbors.

I noticed you other post, you could go with a turbo and no exhaust. I saw it once on a T595 and it was really mean sounding. I'm pretty sure it was a kit from Turbo Connection. It used a variable pitch vane and made 160 RWHP on 8 psi. They specialize in HD and Triumph, but if you want it bad enough I'm sure that someone could make a turbo work on the VFR.

It's not that I'm seeking huge performance gains, I just like to know what I'm getting for my money. I think all the current exhausts look cool, and sound cool, but some cost more than others, and I would like to know which one has the (higher) decibel advantage.

+1 on open headers - wow. I only revved to about 2K for the sake of the neighbors and my hearing. I can only image what it would sound like at 10K running on 4 valves. musik20.gif

D&D are reputed to be the loudest cans out there.

Unf, they don't make an exhaust for the 6th gen, but fear not.

Scrounge two matching D&D cans on EBAY, plus a set of stock 6th gen mufflers/pipes here on VFRd and roll your own, A 'la Baileyrock, Et Al.

Simple, cheap, unique, and LOUD!!!! musik20.gif


Here's a pair right here, $250, cheap. 50 bucks for a stock VTEC exhaust and break out the hacksaw, Baby!
And since you are the self-proclaimed "Fabricator, and jack(ass) of all trades", this should be a cakewalk for you.

(note the clamp-style inlet, probably 2" which is pretty standard)

I gutted my stock cans, cut the ends off pulled ALL the inards out and put the heat shealds back on....... (no I didn't weld the ends back on, it's wide open!) It's loud.... but oh sooooooo swweeet! I've kept it that way for nearly two years now... Grew up with Uncle who ran IHRA PRO Mod rear engine dragster. It was had a big block chevy 454 so to say the least I like em loud. It's very loud but everyone LOVES the way the thing sounds. Heck, the local Yamaha shops mechanic has to come out and fire it up just to hear it. I've been told it sounds like a high performance boat coming down the lake. Eveyone asks me about it. It has a higher pitch note than the sealed up cans. Some of you will get a chance to hear them this time next week! WOOT can't wait! See ya at the Gap.

There is a gentleman in South Florida named Henry DeGouw. He is the promotor for CCS Florida region racing, and loves the sound of the GP bikes. He is absolutley convinced that is one of the main draws of the GP series - the sound. He could be right I don't know. He's gone so far as to pay an extra cash prize to any riders finishing in the top places in his CCS Unlimited Shootout races.
Now for the part where this is slightly relevant:
He just picked up a R1 LE, and custom fitted two open straight pipes under the tail in place of mufflers. They look pretty badass, and sound is certainly unique. Not as nasty as just cutting the pipe down by the collector, imo.
You want loud on your VFR? Try that out. Throw a couple straight pipes under the seat!

Lasers are loud, but expensive. I am running mine with no baffles, and people have no problems hearing me. biggrin.gif

I checked with D&D a while back and they said they had a 6th Gen exhaust in the works and should be out sometime this year?? I did hear a new set on a blackbird and they were as quiet as the stock VFR. Maybe they only get louder as they get older.

I know the Lazer Xtreme's do about 108 dB about 12 in away from the exhaust at 5000rpm. The little sticker under your seat that says you're not allowed to mess with the exhaust by penalty of law also says that the decibel level should not exceed 88dB at 5000 rpm. All I have to say about the sticker is...SCREW THAT!!! biggrin.gif

going with the straight exhaust after the CAT is most definitely the loudest without doing any major mods (i.e.- taking off the CAT). Is it street legal? Most cerntainly not.

Are you more likely to have the people in your neighborhood call the cops for disturbing the peace than you are to get pulled over for the noise. Yes.

Is it unfair that most Harley guys with straight pipes are probably nearly as loud as a pipe-less VFR, but would never get pulled over? Yes.

I would much rather use a set of cut up stock VYEC pipes. Hack off the OE mufflers and bolt up a pair of aftermarket ones. comp13.gif

Just take the exhaust off at the midpipe and weld a little plate onto the end to deflect the exhaust down and keep the rain from getting into the catalytic converter.

It's definitely going to be the loudest but I think it's still quieter then plenty of H-Ds out there. If you really feel like killing baby seals when you have it apart you can easily poke something inside and poke holes in the catalytic converter for even more noise.

I have a roll of carbon twill just waiting for an occasion like this... and an idea fro another, "balls to the wall" version, to remain undisclosed for the time being...

I have heard all the sound clips, but you never can tell just how loud they are until you hear them in person. I like the sound of the Leo Vince pipes best, when I listen to clips of those pipes, I get the same feeling I get when I watch that MotoGP/Nickelback-Animals vid wheel.gif

But, the times they are a changing. As usual. And the loud pipes are risking rights to ride, and some places to ride have already been lost. Both on and off road. pissed.gif

Fast is not equal to loud. MotoGP bikes notwithstanding. I hope they limit their dbs, because they're painfully loud. Like some Hardleys.

I just had the lazers put on. At first I didn't think they were that loud....now I'm thinking earplugs on every ride is a good idea. Love the sound though.

Does anyone mind posting the sound clips of a modified stock exhaust vs. the laser exhaust. I have heard the D&D, stains, and leo. It's true, until you hear them in person its hard to tell the difference, but I am thinking of just working with the stock, if i could just her what it sounds like. Thanks

An OEM exhaust gut is probably the loudest. Just ask the guys that were within a couple of miles of Billyjackjimbob at the TexasMac Meet. tongue.gif

Kanadan Ken has his gutted but he welded the endcap back on. It was still the loudest bike of the group I was with this weekend. Louder than my Remus pipes, and louder than the 5th gens with TwoBrothers and Staintune without the spud. I could hear him while wearing earplugs and having two bikes seperating us.
