some of you may remember the wrecked '99 VFR project bike I picked up from this thread - http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20238

so far this is what I've got done:
K&N air filter
power commander II
pilot power tires
high-mount micron exhaust
replacement gas tank (ebay)
front, left & right fairings (ebay)
custom made seat from corbin, added 1" of foam and shaved the sides to make it easier to hang off the bike, plus its got the slick carbonfiber lookalike cover to make it easier to slide around on it

just ordered front & rear galfer rotors and pads

I plan on removing the suspension this coming week and shipping it to aftershocks to get everything rebuilt, revalved and sprung for my weight

still have some work to do like fix the sidestand, remove the centerstand, change the oil & filter, change the sparkplugs, adjust the valves, flush the radiators. Still have a couple more replacement parts to order like some various fairing bolts, a windscreen, seat cowl, stuff like that.

I'm also about to order new chain and sprockets, going to drop one tooth up front... can anybody steer me towards exactly what I need to order for that?

Good to hear an update...

I have seriously considered this several times, as I have loved the fifth gen on the track... just the way it puts down power makes the bike very tractable... the only holdbacks are, of course, the ground clearance and the weight. Ground clearance can be significantly increased with added rear ride height.

Looking forward to hearing more about your saga!

If it's not going to be back on the road ground clearance etc problems can be solved & yes a full sports bike will have more but you will still ot them in corners with the better power to the ground :-)

For track sag is way less than road so bike needs to have good suspension but set for track, you remove everything you can not needed lights, stands, mirrors, etc so bike becomes lighter. Trying to find some race glass that you can adapt like F4I etc will also cut down weight buy removing VFR subframe & making stuby frame to suit race glass single seat design. I have setup a VFR750 for track & so far ground clearance isn't a issue at all & I haven't gone to race glass yet.

Example normal road static sag for VFR is 35mm, for track this can be as low as 15-20mm so there is 15 odd mm extra height front already & dampening will also be stiffer with better valving or oil weight played with so there is allot of scope to gain ground clearance.

You don't want to tip into a fast sweeper doing 200+ & have suspension bouncing sending you wide, so above all things suspension is the key to your ground clearance due to extra weight VFR has.

i would recommend buying the 6 gen front sprocket and unless the rear looks bad i would run that. i bought jt sprockets and compared them to a stock new one and an afam sprocket and the jt had poor profile width at the tooth end (very narrow) i believe you have a cyclegear in lost wages and they stock many chains and also carry the afam power sprocket kits. i am very curious as to what your going to use as rear sets!!!!!!!!!

the 6th gen front is one tooth less than the 5th gen? and it bolts right on?

yup! and you keep the rubberized vibration reducer(vulcanized on).
side note: when buying chain for vfr the 5gen is 108 link and the 6gen is 110 link but most only stock the 110 link and will reduce the links for free. please don't waste your time and money by installing masterlink on 110 link chain. (its already been done and i read about it on vfrd)
have you never drug your footpegs at the track?

It has been a really long day. Can you explain this statement to me. What do you mean don't install a master link because its already been done?

i remember one of us had installed the masterlink on a 110 link chain on a 5 gen bike. 5 gens use a 108 link chain!
#11
well I knew the 5th only used 108 links but like I said its been a long day and your statement just made my head swim. Ever had days like that where you just can't figure out where people are coming from? Thanks.

over 55 now. have confused days frequently! chuck

See if you can find a 520 chain and sprokets. Save a little bit of weight there.
Don't forget you can remove the cooling fan on a track bike!
Are you removing the sidestand? You said fixing... Take it off! Buy a Sport Chock if you don't like the idea of using rear race stand.

Are you going to tour around the country with it after you finish and give us rides? beer.gif

I'm using the stock ones with some aftermarket pegs. My left knee is jacked up which is why I'm using a VFR instead of a 600rr in the first place... I just cant bend my knee enough to ride anything with a more agressive tucked-in riding position.

I have 2 sport chocks already, they rock for transporting the bikes on a flat trailer, but a sidestand is much more conveniant for when you just need to move the bike around in the garage, etc and it doesnt weigh much. Its a track bike, but I have no intention of racing it.

Sure, as long as the tour is between Miller Motorsports Park, Spring Mountain Raceway, California Speedway, Button Willow and Willow Springs smile.gif

Hehe, cool! My '98 F3 has a two bolt mounted sidestand, so I use it and take it off at the track. I have a '99 VFR, but honestly have never looked at how it's mounted.
Sounds great! I think that without the centerstand and raise the rear and stiffer preload on the rear, the ground clearance will be ok.
You could go totally nuts and get the big bore kit, and make it a total loss system! What R/R issues? LOL!

Hey Pheer,

Looks like it coming right along.

By the way.......after suffering thru 100 degree day at Thunderhill 3 weeks ago.......I'm taking your advice and re-scheduling Spring Mtn from June to Nov........just can't handle 100 degrees in full leathers........even if they are perforated blink.gif

Would be fun to tie up at some of the tracks if you're going to be visiting Buttonwillow, and maybe Spring Mntn when I head that way.

We're scheduled to be at SM on Nov 11, with So Cal Trackdays.

Ooh very very pretty! I think they might be the nicest wave/buzzsaw rotors I've seen yet. I especially like black rotor carriers, they look very purposeful.

The bike specs to date sound great. How far will you go with it? Lose the dash for one off a VFR400, fit a 4th Gen rear wheel (lighter and the smaller tyre makes for better handling), USD front end...

Here's a track day schedule for ya, with all the tracks that I consider to be close enough to drive to from Las Vegas. Summer is brutal in Las Vegas & Pahrump so I'll be skipping those dates till mid september, but I have no idea how hot it normaly is during summer at button Willow and Willow Springs. I'm seriously considering making the drive to Miller Motorsports in July if I get this bike ready by then.

Thats a little farther than I want to go with it, I want to actually quit working on it pretty soon and just ride it smile.gif

Just about to yank this suspension off as soon as I get the water cooler in the garage going this evening. I got a headlight protector which seems to be just perfect to fiberglass into the front fairing to fill in the gaping hole where the headlights used to be, so thats probably the next step.

Ok, I've decided that it will not be just a track bike anymore. I'm going to put it on the street. So I'll have a 5th gen and a 6th gen on the street... although I'll probably sell the 6th gen and buy an ST1300 this fall.

Thinking about painting this thing the same orange that comes on the lamborghini gallardo.. dont know why but I just love that color smile.gif

i think it is a good plan. would be better if you have mounted rubber for each, track/street. tad hot out there now, without air conditioning!
#30
where did you get your Galfer set for that price? Also, do you know if its ok to run EBC pads with the Galfer rotors?
