VFR Discussion Group -> knee dragging on a VFR

i met up with 50 or so random young folks (all sportbikes) in the southbay for a ride last weekend, and mine was the only VFR in the crew. never before had i heard such taunting!

Them: Your bike is for old men with hemroids.
Me: No! It's the sensible sportbike! Check out the ergonomics, they're...phat!
Them: Um, that 600 pound hippo will barely make it around the turns. You better ride sweeper.
Me: But the V-4 sounds good, and it's dependable, and i can ride all day comfortably and never stop for gas...
Them: You ever seen anyone dragging their knee off a VFR?
Me: Actually, my joints have been feeling a little arthritic, i get up to pee 3 times each night, and i hate teenagers...maybe i am an old man.


i promised their leader i'd find a picture of SOMEONE dragging knee off a VFR and email it to him, but as yet i've had little luck. anyone have a picture? i'd like to save a little face with these guys...though i was able to smoke most of 'em in the turns, anyway.

i will say that i have yet to meet another 23 year old with a viffer...

While I cant help you with the pics just yet (i'm getting close to having some of my own though!), I'm 22 with a viffer. My usual riding buddies ride: ZX-6R, GSXR 600, Daytona 955i, Falco, and an SV650. All are good riders, and I can outrun most of 'em on my '92. wheel.gif

If I get photo evidence of my knee down any time soon, I'll post it up for ya. fing02.gif

ha, I'm only 20 and I have a vfr...damn teenagers! tongue.gif I haven't dragged my knee yet, but that's because I don't need to in order to whip those young guys on sport bikes in the twistys. I'm too poor to go to a track day and I bet that's the only time you can really get a knee down unless you find some really nice roads where traffic isn't out to kill you around the bend. Like a lot of people here have said before, it's the rider not the bike...

sparks a flying! Dang foot pegs getting in the way. So what if your vfr wasn't meant for dragging knee, that doesn't mean you can do it. Personally, I would like to ride in comfort and have a bike that is a little different than every other crotch rocket out there. You see cbr's, gsx, and ninja's all over the place, but you don't see as many vfr's. It sounds like all those teenage haters are just jealous that you have a much cooler bike.

It looks like every photo is done on a track. To me, knee dragging is riding at 10/10ths or even 11/10ths. Is the street the place for that?

I'd let them say what they want and let your riding ability and exceptional personality do the rest.

Wait until you get to the first gas stop and then buy each of them an ice cream. They'll love you forever.

I am 25 and ride a VFR, I know of someone personally that is 21 and has one.

I love passing literbikes 2 up with a trunk on going into or out of turns just to have them blast past me in the straights - oh yea, you win buddy! wheel.gif

The VFR is capabale enough to keep up with any SS bike out there, it's all about the rider.

Are you really that concerned about it?

Unfortunately, I can just about guarantee that everyone at a gathering of 50 sport bikes is going to be there to show off and be as gangsta/ghetto fabulous as possible and will take every opportunity to put someone down. And you're getting too old for this stuff, grow up! smile.gif j/k

I used to get this kind of ribbing from some of my friends. Then they went riding with me and got into the corners. When I was 10-15 bike lengths ahead of them coming out of the corners, and I had to wait for them to catch up with me, the ribbing stopped. Now with the new Stradas I have on, I think that I can pull further away from them. smile.gif

Like it has been said, it's the rider, not the bike. The VFR is more than capable of being able to keep up with anything out there, right until you get into the straights, laugh.gif

I have and regularly outride kids on the supersports. My favorite was the look on the face of a friend who races when he was behind me and I was crossing the vfr up and smoking the tire into the corner. I did not tell him it scared me so badly I will never do it again.

I am 22, and just bought a '90 vfr750. I think the sound is the best part of the bike, mine has a full 2bros exhaust. My friend has a cbr600f4i and kind of gave me a funny look when I brought it home. Oh well, I like it. Plus, I paid probably a third of what he paid for his, and I can keep up with him in the twisties. oops, boss is coming.

You know I probably would have gotten rude and said somthing like "who gives a #$%K what you think kid'? but thats just me I dont put up with smart ass kids!

I am glad that someone showed the Fredie Spencer pic. I forget that all of his intructors ride VFR's in his school, and I know they can keep up with just about anyone that comes out on the track with them.

I like it when people say that my VFR isn't a true "Sportbike." I tell them "You are right, it isn't, but if you think for one minute that you can ride 300-400 miles a day, and still ride in teh curves like I can, you are sadly mistaken."

What cracks me up are the guys with the extended swingarm turbo busa's that go really fast in a stright line, but couldn't possibly keep up with anyone in a set of curves.

+1.gif That's exactly the response needed in this situation.... Save face?? Naaahhh... No face-saving neeeded!! I am a 20's Viffer too and yes I do ride with some of these big dog race bikes here in Mobile also... Of course, I like to think I am a bit more sane on mine, but there is no bike out there that blows me away AT ALL.. And yes, the twisties are OWNED by my 5th gen... musik20.gif

The bike itself helps a lot... The rider and his/her skills is 10x more important though... and, of course, mods and farkles just emphasize the riders abilities and capacity...

Me? I accept the LOVING wanna-be praise with a smile and a sligth laugh... "Haha you little basta@ds, talk now, but have fun doing it, because your gonna have PLENTY of time listening to the perfect sound of a V-4 coming out of a Yoshimura... and then wonder why don't have a V-4".... hehe

Then again, the best riders are USUALLY not the ones at the front of the pack... NOt the ones showing everybody they can be fast too... NOT the ones busting balls on the interstate and then creeping to an idle in the twisties...

In most cases, by my opinion, they save it for the track, an experienced group, or soem location that yields quite a bit of confidence in the road and traffic...

I'm 24, and couldn't care less about what people have to say when I pull up on my hard saddlebag-equipped viffer. I enjoy it, and when I want to go and really toast some tire, I roll out on the CBR instead. cool.gif

South bay as in San Jose-ish, CA? I was riding on the 101 north at about 1pm in San Jose and saw a huge group of sportbikes going southbound. It was a great sight to see. I was riding home from picking up my new to me VFR 800 at the time.

FYI, I'm 28 and I love the bike. Don't mind the haters, they shouldn't be so caught up in what you ride. Being on 2 wheels is good enough for me! (This is coming from a guy who has friends who ride a SV650, F4i, Harley, Honda VTX, Honda CB750, Duc 996, or Honda XR650R)

I'm 25 with a VFR and have had it since I was 23. Just starting taking it to the track. I don't have any good shots of my knee actually dragging, but I have my leathers:

That was an OOPS! Dragged too far! I got a little knee happy when I realized I could drag my knees...

I know that there's plenty of proof above my reply, but reading the your initial topic starter fired me up a bit to want to reply anyways!

I agree with most of the comments here, don't let people hate on you just because they have some kind of misconception of the VFR. I've seen Harley Sportsters outride squid.gif 's on ZX-6's, CBRs, and the like. It's all about the rider, not the ride.

Glad to hear you did smoke them though just to rub the argument into their faces. beer.gif

Your riding partners should spend a little time trying to keep up with him before they bad mouth anybody's bike.

I would probably tempted to respond as HS mentioned though.
