Radar Detector Mounting Suggestions?

I have a Passport X-50 that I want to mount on my 2000 VFR and I'm looking for some mounting suggestions. Anybody have pics that they can share?

They have stuff that will allow you to mount almost anything almost anywhere.

These are just some of the choices. People make mounts that will go into the hole in the steering stem.

They show a variety of mounts. I also have the Escort X50 radar detector. This and the HARD and windshield mount were purchased from Legal Speeding. This included the hardwire also. The windshield mount blocks the tach a bit, but when tucked low everything is unobstructed.

No good shots of it, but I have a V1 mounted to a double plate StemStand. The Radar goes on the right pad and the camera on the left!

Hitting 30K on my 02 !

Here are a couple pics of the free custom mount I made with scrap aluminum I had laying around. I wanted the detector front and center where I could see it, and where it would have the best reception. Was not crazy about any of the potential ram-mount locations. The detector is just velcroed on, so really easy to remove if I park somewhere I'm worried about it. Has worked fine for the past several thousand miles (still got one ticket, though; damn instant-on).

V1 Mount I cut the mount out of some scrap sheet aluminum, bent a couple of ears down to fit on top of the instrument panel cover, and used a couple of machine screws to hold in place. They're backed up with nylock nuts on the inside of the cover.

How do you like the HARD? $160 is a bit hard to swallow, but cheaper than one ticket around here. At least my V1 was "free" since it came with my car, and the HARD (unlike most other devices) doesn't require the V1 remote audio accessory.

If the RAM mount on the left bar does not work for you try mounting a RAM ball just in front of the tank. You can barely see the ball sticking out in this shot. Note the portable dual lense navigation technology too.

I know you are probably looking at permanent mounting solutions, but I went with the cordless escort/passport, and use a small peice of velcro, and its stable at even top speed!! No joke.

Here's an alternative to the HARD system, :idea3: it's the Visual Alert, by Marc Parnes Products.

I looked at the HARD system :blink: , but did not like the fact that it required a battery. The Marc Parnes Visual Alert is a plug and play system, no batteries.

I mounted my Visual Alert just under the lip of the windscreen (I have a ZG DB) with a piece of velcro. I can see it there even in the brightest of daylight.

At $59 it's a good deal. Simple, reliable, small, and no battery.

I like it since there is no wired connection. The LED is easily positioned for bright days. The only down side is remembering to turn the receiver off. I believe there is a receiver for the V1 also. Another benefit is there is noswitching or mixing device necessary if you are using a music player.

That means you would be looking in the general direction of where the Visual Alert is mounted. With the HARD it's always in view regardless of where you are looking.

A buddy of mine has the HARD system with his Escort and he always forgets to turn the receiver off. He goes through CR2023s by the case.

I had looked a version of the SportVue-the model I was hoping for had the ability to show speed, gear indicator and radar alert. A buddy and I were at the Cyclefest at Copper mountain last year and thought we stumbled on a great deal -$75. We purchased them and then looked a liitle closer, and learned it was not compatible with radar detectors. Luckily for us, the vendor gave us full refunds.

Still happy with the HARD

You can put a bigger battery pack on the helmet. someone, I think it is legal speeding, sells batteries 10 for $10 including shipping.

I just keep my escort 8500 in my tank bag and use the HARD system. It's great when you learn to turn the receiver off. I have a stem mount on my boxer and never really liked it.

The HARD system is the best, I don't want chords to my helmet, other than my zen. and it's on/off is easy to do, imagine your helmet flashing red as you go down the road at night.

I mounted my passport on a stem-mount from motorcycleradar.com, along with the radar screamer (which works well, I might add, no prblem hearing it beep with helmet and earplugs)...http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g36/cleatus_maximus/VFR800/radar1.jpg.

The stem mount is rugged and the unit stay put no problem.

I'm still planning on trying the HARD with my V1. If it's bright enough during the day, does it tend to completely blind you at night? I don't ride much at night, but I suppose I could turn it off then, since the V1 is a lot more visible.

I've used a Saeng mirror mount for 4 years. No complaints. I can easily move it from bike to bike. They also have a stem mount. Check out the link.

interesting link, anyone with opinion on their wind deflectors?

Keep in mind that where ever you mount it they do not like moisture. Ask me how I know...
Mine rides in map pocket of tankbag. Works fine and there is a modicum of protection from rain drops.

How is that going to work? Radar is line of sight. I think mounting it under your fairings and pointed at a funky angle will pretty much render it useless. Unless I am mistaken.

I'm not saying it'll work for everyone but it works just as well for me in that position as it did stuck to my truck's dash or windshield. I played with numerous locations and couldn't notice any real difference with this detector. I did line the inside of the fairing with aluminum tape in the hopes that it might improve signal reception. I just wanted a location that was fairly weatherproof and one that would be out of sight to cops and potential gadget thieves. :thumbsup:
