Won't Start After Replacing Clutch Cover

Are you sure that the pulse generator wasn't damaged in the crash? Is it pluged in properly, or maybe the wire was damaged?
I couldn't comment on the gasket theory, or the testing procedures, but I think I have an extra pulse generator. Depending on what you need.

Thanks for the reply.

It started with no problem imediately after the crash and 4 or five times since up until I swapped the clutch covers. The connector appeared to be solidly plugged together, it has the usual fastener device. And my ohmmeter shows comtinuty at the connector so the wire does not appear to be damaged.. If you have a spare pulse generator and an ohmmeter, if you could check the resistance for comparison that would be a big help. If we get way different readings that would tell something.

I keep checking back on this thread to see the progress...
I pulled the blackbird manual (its factory the vfr I have is clymer)

Some notes on the ICM from the manual...
1) ICM May be damaged if dropped
2) If connector is disconnected when current is flowing, the execessive voltage may damage the module
3) Always turn off ignition switch before servicing.
4) A faulty ignition system is often related to poor connections. Check connections before proceeding.
5) Make sure battery is adequetly charged.
6) Using starter motor with weak battery will result in slower engine cranking speed as well as no spark to spark plug

Your right.. you can't do this without the peak voltage adapter. The part number is 07HGJ-0020100.

You can do a spark test, but that will probably tell you what you suspect... no fire. The peak voltage adapter is what will help you determine if it is Ignition Pulse Generator or if something freaky happened to the coils.

the pulse generators on the VFR is on the Clutch?

Finally got it started! I re-installed the clutch cover using the oem gasket that finally arrived after 16 days. I was carefull to insure the pulse generator was properly installed and all bolts were properly torqued, or at least close as I can get with a cheap torque wrench. I was also carefull to insure the starter gears were properly installed. FWIW I had not followed the specified procedure for this the first time. However I can't imagine how it could make any difference whether you install the pins first, then the gears or install the pins in the gears first as specified? It seemmed to crank more freely but still NO START!

After a lot of cursing I pulled the plugs and cleaned them. They were wet and dirty. Replaced the plugs and crank for about a minute, still no start. Pulled a spark cap and hooked up my spark tester and cranked. NICE SPARK! WTF? While checking the spark I heard a couple pops.

I removed the tester and put the cap back on and just cranked. I must have cranked it about 20 seconds non stop about 4 times, gradually gettong more and more pops and then it finally started. I let it warm up and then trided some throttle and it died. Repeat above procedure, let it warm up more and finally it starts running right, revving at will. Out it away for the night, next morning started up with no problem.

Don't really know what to think. The latest episode seems obviously fuel related. I will know more when I have a chance to actually ride it. Still waiting for a side panel that UPS misrouted.

Chappuis,
Glad you finally got it fixed!! Man reading your last post was like... ohh man... ouch!!

I almost think that if it wasn't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all! Not a single break on this project. Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

I am in agreement with you... Would not have thought the clutch gasket would make a difference nor the reference to the pins and gears.

Glad your done... wish would have made a write up with pictures on this one... (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif)
