My first thought is it is sensor malfunction. Maybe the oxygen sensor. Don't '01 have O2 sensors???

Do a search in the How-To section for reading the codes in the ECM. Hopefully, if you're lucky, you will have set a code or two and then you will know how to fix it. My 5th gen FI light comes on intermittently and sometimes comes on with the turn indicators, but a quick flash of the high beams and it's gone. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/dry.gif) Go figure... The other folks that have had issues similar to mine have had success fixing the problem by replacing the ENTIRE HARNESS.... Hopefully the next person with a similar issue will test their old harness and find where the actual source of the problem is.

Oh well. Good luck!

I had this problem, which slowly got worse, with the bike finally cutting out. Reseting the kill switch got it going again, as did riding with the lights off. Finally traced the problem to a bad earth lead / conection at the earth cluster plug. Its located just fwd of the RR on the left hand side below the seat frame. It has some "fork" conections in it. pull them out and clean it all up. I also had a bad conection with one of the wires going into the cluster.
