Get some good use out of it, go to a tire store and commute yourself to the burnout pit, then buy some rubber. Life's way too short for cheap beer and used rubbers .

I have a 93 and 170/60/17 is the factory tire size. I use mine for commuting all the time and have experienced no issues in that department. It even corners pretty well. I currently amd running the nwe Dunlop Qualifiers and am very pleased with them and they seem to be wearing pretty well. The rear tire has about 4K on it and still has plenty of life in it. The front I just replaced in September at Deals Gap and I don't remember the mileage I have on it right off the top of my head.

I've used 170 width rear tire on OEM wheel of my 2000 VFR800 since April, 6000+ miles on the tire now, never had a problem leaned over in the corners or cruising at triple digit speed on highways.

Yes the bike tends to dive into turn more quickly than equipped with a 180 width rear tire, but not unpredictable. As long as you take things at you own risk, know your limit, I don't see why not use the rear wheel/tire as is.
