5th & 6th?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not as technical as many contributors. My query - I thought the VTEC had to do with the 7000rpm switch to 4 valves, the newest bike switching at 6400(?)rpm. I see a lot of comments about VTEC vs non-VTEC when the years are clearly modern. Am I thick? blink.gif I know my '01 feels the four!! (My first & only Vif.)

Quick question: Why does my description have a warning gauge?

We all have warning gauges - if there is a percentage other than 0% - then you must have been a bad boy.. Its the MOds way of letting you know if you stepped over the line, which seldom happens here..... biggrin.gif

As for the VTEC - where is Veefercanucks pictorial "Can of Worms" - cause I think its now openend up again....... lurk.gif

VTec is 2002 and up.
Everyone has a warning gauge, but you can only see your own (unless you are a mod). If you are bad, the 0 you see will go up. ask 767fixer about it. goofy.gif

I'm not imagining the rush and sound at 7000. My manual and stickers say VTEC. What am I missing?

Either someone duped you - or you have some sort of one off factory test bike, that was a pre runner to the 2002 VTEC. huh.gif

do you have under seat exhaust and 4 headlight bulbs?

i dont think anyone answered your question yet, 2002-2004 or 2005 the second half of the motor kicks in at 7000 rpms and then (im not sure if its 2005 or 2006) the newer models it kicks in at 6400 rpms ....i dont know why they made the change goofy.gif

nope, you have 4 valve power all the time.
i will trade engines with you, you can have my vtec with chain driven cams. if anything to be envious of the 6th gens about it would be for styling (subjective) or suspension (stock sucks on both, but both can be fixed aftermarket), not the engine.

Your 5th generation/'01 should be operating on all 16 valves (4 valves per cylinder - 2 input and 2 output) all the time. In the 6th generation/'02 and newer bikes the engine operates on 2 valves per cylinder (1 input and 1 output) until VTEC kicks in, when the other 2 valves per cylinder open up.

You're right in that the '02-'05 bikes have a VTEC engagement point of 7000 rpm while the '06-'07 versions engagement point is 6400 rpm.

Why the change between model years? Hard to say, but some people think moving the engagement point down 600 rpm was in response to people's complaints about the harshness (hard kick) of the switch between normal and VTEC modes. I think Honda said that 6400 rpm was just a more optimal engagement point for most riders.

VTEC supposedly saves fuel - not really, but it's a selling point - but I think it's mostly about noise levels and emissions. I like VTEC, kicks in at 7k on my '04, love the sound it makes in VTEC, but I agree to some extent with those who say it's the VTEC bikes are just over-engineered. Might have bought a 5th gen. instead but loved the looks of the 6th gen. more, plus I found a terrific used one for sale locally.

No, it's actually very simple. If you look at a torque curve for the VTEC models (pre-2006), the curve has a pronounced dip before the VTEC kicks in, making the engagement harsher. Shifting it lower down the rev range avoids the dip.

Oh, so the change was meant to get VTEC to kick in sooner, eliminating the dip in the torque curve? That makes sense. I don't notice it much tho. Most of the time when I go VTEC I'm accelerating pretty hard. Except cruising on the freeway at 80-85 mph, I hardly spend any time at 6k to 6.5k rpm, and when I want to accelerate rapidly from that speed I usually downshift, taking the bike into VTEC right away, so I'm not surprised I haven't noticed any dip. I also don't notice the 'dead zone' many people complain about between 4k and 5k rpm. Either I'm not noticing those issues or I got lucky and my bike is fine. Either way it's not a big deal to me. I love the bike anyway.

BTW, I would love to test ride a 5th gen. VFR sometime. Would like to see what I missed by making the 6th gen. my 1st VFR.

Lots of whining, and (IMO) a better-feeling engine.
But the VTEC feels better to ride in other regards (suspension, handling, linked brakes, instruments, etc.)

Interesting.

Perhaps you have remnants of a squirrel, in your air box. Once you reach 7,000 rpm,, the vac. draw straightens out whats left, of the fuzzy corpse, and you get a H.P. boost. ???, Ahhh, ????, ? LOL. Squirrel-tech. It's a one-off. Rare find.

Nearly but not quite out of the woods, the '02 VTec build date started about Oct '01, I have seen a Vtec built 11/01.



Do you have 4 headlights & underseat exhaust or 2 Headlights and right side exhaust ?

Check the identification plate on your frame and look for the code to the left of the letter "M"

If it reads FI1M you have non-Vtec 01
If it reads 2M, you have VTec 02

RC46 1998-2001
'98 '99 '00 '01
FIW FIX FIY FI1

RC46 2002-2006
'02 '03 '04 '05 '06

You check if your bike was ABS or not by the 3rd character left from the M (2002 onwards)

'C' for ABS Modeld: ie JH2RC46C92M...
'A' for non-ABS: ie JH2RC46A02M...

This *should* solve the mystery....

That takes too much effort. 4 vs 2 headlights is a dead giveaway. OEM undertail exhaust vs single can is a dead giveaway. I'd actually have to bend over and focus to read the VIN plate....way too much work! tongue.gif
