Why The Difference?

On my Y2K VFR the pipes that are visable from the right hand side are black in color as though they have been treated with something.

In this photo they do not appear to be treated at all.

The seller told me that the bike was bone stock.

Why the difference?

PS: I'd post a photo of my bike but my gallery must have been nuked with the last database meltdown. ARRRRGH!

The header pipes are a low-grade stainless steel, with black paint finish, which tends to degrade with use, and can rust.
Some owners (Trace, teleskier, et alia) have had their header pipes HPC treated or similar and they may be a different finish (silver, black, blue, purple, etc.)

So, with just over 12K miles on my bike then it must be that the pain has yet to wear off. Is that correct?

So far, my bike has always been garaged. That must have something to do with it.

do you have a cat? I thought 98-99 pipes were black painted with no cat, and 00-07 had a cat and were the low grade stainless

Cats are good to skin and turn into slippers.
Mebbe they are different grade stainless. Hoo Nose?

Looks to me that your bike has a Full Two Bros exhaust system and not the the Cat equiped black painter steel headers. unsure.gif

Stock pipes with an Erion slip-on. I don't think the VFR got stainless headers until '02.

Please note that the photo that I used is NOT one of my bike. It is one of someone else bike and it got me thinking.

I honestly don't know where to look to see if I have a catalytic converter. Would it be visible without removing a panel?

Even if they did come stock with a black coating I don't think it's likely that after 12,000 miles it would still be in such great shape but I could be wrong.

My Y2K has stock black "collectors" and two bros high mount slip on. Don't know what's going on in that picture you have. Maybe someone modified it or the paint just burned off, as enzed indicated. I think black is the stock look.

The first photo is someone elses bike. The close up is my bike. It sounds like I have stock collectors but that they are just being preserved well.

The bike in the first photo appears to have a full TBR stainless system and your bike has the stock headers with a slipon.

Dan,

You can see the catalytic converter under the bike without removing the panels.

It is in the pressed steel section to the back of the collector that all of the pipes feed into before the muffer pipe emerges. The problem is once you've seen one you'll know what it looks like, if you haven't this will sound like gibberish.

The cat is like a kid's small lunch box that has been crushed on all sides. That is, it is rounded in all of the corners. Maybe box is the key - the cat looks like a box.

If you don't have a cat, the pressed steel piece looks like a "Y" - two pressed steel "pipes" in, one out to the muffler.

Aside from the muffler, the cat will be the biggest volume in the exhaust system.

Teleskier's 99 (NO CAT) stock headers jet hot coated sterling. Where all 4 pipes come together the cat system would look like 4 pipes going into a large box.
