I just bought a F2 rear wheel from the owner of this bike. I guess he doesn't need it. :warranty:

Here`s a pic of the ugly front end:

Zach sent me an email and after I read your posts, thought I`d post a pic or 2 and have a comment.
Nice to see some interest in my personal project.
First, I built it for me alone, that others like it is great, if you don`t oh well.
Nothing I have done bolts on....well, it all does now but it didn`t just come off a dealers shelf made for this bike and all I had to do is bolt it on; "look, my very own custom!" just like everyone else`s!
Every change was linked to another change, the SSS required a handmade exhaust since the original swingarm had the rear pipes running in the front of the swingarm between 2 stub-pivots, now the swigarm goes all the way across and you can see what I did with the rear exhaust. Then the battery and electrics needed somewhere to live, under the tail. By the way, that is a modified NSR250 tail, not a CBR900 tail. The undertail is a scratch-built, one-off by me. The tank is from a 1986 VFR750, modified to work on this bike, and the lower seam has been cut off and re-welded. The seat is a one-off by me. The shock mount and entire frame area around the shock has been cut out and rebuilt and now has adjustable ride-height built in. Anything unnecessary on the frame has been removed, most of the metal from under the tail, I never wanted it to carry a passenger, only my skinny butt. The rear lower frame rails that attach to the sub-frame were cut off, shortened and moved up past the swingarm pivot. Look at Zach`s bike and you will see. The fairing is from a European 1984 VF1000RE, my bike is a 1986 USA VF1000RG, the fairing frame was modified to accept the slightly different fairing. Why? Because I like the 2 fairing scoops instead of the 1 big one on the US version and this one is carbon fiber(in 1984!!!). I also like the flat nose look. If it had a different fairing, I think it would cease to be a "VF1000R". To me, at least, it gives the bike a brutal, bull-type look, and the bikes identity. I just updated it a bit without turning it into something else completely. Don`t get me wrong, I have nothing against todays bikes, and I`ve ridden quite a few, it just wasn`t for this bike.
The swingarm was a ton of work but now lives happily with the wheel in the center and the chain lined up. The entire front end is RC51 except for the bars, they are Two Brothers clipons. 1.0kg/mm springs and 10wt fork oil are used for the higher weight of this bike versus a RC51. Adjusted to suit.
Speaking of weight, dry weight stock(no fluids at all) was 538 pounds. Full liquids puts it around 600. I figure I`ve lost approximately 50 pounds total, no more than that. My complete exhaust (front/rear/mufflers/everything) weighs 8 pounds total. Add in the weight chopped from the frame, removed items not needed(like turn signals), the heavy stock 2-place seat and cowl, the RC51 forks with lighter wheels/brakes/etc.
The switchgear has been changed to newer Honda switchgear, the old is definitely dated. The reasets are from Attack Performance for a CBR900 and the original mounts are cut off and bosses mounted through the frame rails.
It is still a big heavy bike, but with the nose dropped and the rear hiked up in the air and modern rubber and fantastic brakes, I see God every time I`m hanging off the inside through a 80mph sweeper!
Hope this picture turns out, this was taken before I added a double-throw oil pump from a Euro VF1000F2 and an undertail oil cooler.

Here`s another pic of her rear!

Here`s an early one when the motor is back in the modified and freshly powdercoated frame.

Continuing the build.

Pipes on but the right exhaust tip will be cut off and rotated to point correctly.

Early mockup, several frame mods to go yet. Tail/tank/seat are done, forks done, fairing frame done.

Thanks, I probably will...at least until I get done with my latest.....1984 VF1000F Interceptor, VF1000R swingarm, VF1000R motor, CBR600 rear wheel, RC51 front end(CBR600 front wheel in this pic)...don`t know about the pipe though. May do something with a high-mount can up each side...

No, I don`t make a living at it, but thanks! I do fix up alot of old bikes and sell them to make some $ for my personal projects, but that is it. Just something to keep me sane.
I have been talking to Performance Bikes mag for awhile now, trying to coordinate a possible feature on the R. It`s a bit hard to do since I`m in Colorado and they are in the UK... :) There is interest though, just need to be able to meet a reliable photographer that they will use.(One on their payroll that is.)
I used the R swingarm mostly for looks(the 'F' arm is more plain to me), I`m going to adapt the R`s underslung rear caliper also, I have another titled frame in the basement, I planned on using a CBR600 wheel anyway and wanted something not stock, and I really don`t want to repeat the VFR swingarm thing(even with a machinists help!).
Keep after the VF750F! These are great old bikes! Not perfect, but in my mind worth the effort.

I hate to burst bubbles here but the VF1000R 122hp figure is "claimed horsepower". In Honda (or manufacturer) speak, that's at the crank on a very good motor.
Here's the only dyno chart I could quickly find on one:

OK,
I`m back. Had a video card die on this box and just busier than hell with life!
No real news except I now have an eight-spoke rear wheel that has been powdercoated to match(I`ll get a pic up), bought, fixed and sold a V45 Sabre, V65 Sabre, GS750ES, VT500 Ascot and I found a complete 1983 V45 Interceptor that runs! All there and in good shape but needs to be pretty. Got a set of VF1000R forks that need rebuilding, another VF1000R swingarm and am waiting on a set of VF1000R wheels. Already has a Kerker system on it but needs work. Think I`ll make a sort of Race Replica for the street...undecided if it will get a 'R' motor or not....also mostly completed my personal V65 Sabre with a Hondaline fairing and a bunch of other stuff.
By the way, Chev, I noticed the white CBR wheels on your R, Very cool!
Very nice bike you built. I always had a fascination with the early vfr's. I really liked the 1000 model. I have a gen 6 800 now and it is a really nice bike.
The first time I saw the VFR I wanted on but had just bought a Suzuki GS550es. Over the years I have had many bikes but decided to buy me a VFR.
It handles real nice but is weak motor wise. I also have a 2000 1200 bandit. It is all motor and no suspension. With light mods it dyno our at 120hp. (jet kit, full Yosh exhaust). It will run but is no where as nice as my new VFR. I was thinking of making a street fighter out of the Bandit but haven't quite decided yet.
Keep up the good work with the VFR's. That is the nicest VFR 1000 I have seen. I was thinking of putting a SSS on the Bandit but the level of machine work scared me off.
You did a nice quality job here.
Joe
Thanks all! Here is a pic of the 8-spoke I just put on. Powdercoated to match of course.

Very nice.
post purged!
Fantastic conversion, really like the modern take on an already cult bike. vfr 750 tank (your seat) nsr 250 rear flows really well!
Thomas,
Who did the exhaust work? My RC211V replica will need just about the idential front pipes, but I think the rear set will have to go pretty much straight back, probably? Source, pics welcome, close-up preferably.
Thanks,
Larry

s3x on wheels! Wish I had the time, $$, talent or motivation.

A guy named Jeff Silva did the welding. I`ll get some pics up. Been working on the new 86 and the CB1100F, and trying to stay motivated in the cold.
Tom .... Any issues with the oil cooler mounted under the seat ?? :o

No issues except it`s probably not the ideal place for it. Seems to work well at speed but I have been thinking of some kind of fan for slow traffic situations to draw cool air through it. Also been thinking about a smaller cooler somewhere in a more traditional frontal location, but space is tight.
that bike would have won daytona by 3 minutes in 1984
GOOD DESIGN!!!!!

A thread that's back from the dead.
Not that I remember it, and that is one sweet looking bike.
Thanks for bringing this back with warm comments.
Welcome Hiro1980. Thanks for the comment in my profile.
Mutant is still sleeping for the winter. Can`t wait for a ride!
Mutant (calendar pic) is still hanging on my office wall so it's never far away.. :fing02:
