Just a shot in the dark, but....

Are there any calipers from a later model bike that will work as a bolt-on with 3rd gen forks? TIA.

The later VFRs have linked brake systems that does not equate to a simple plug and play situation, because the left caliper on the 5th and 6th gens have a mechanical pivot and link that attaches to their link brake actuators. Anyway, with those calipers, you still get the low tech sliding calipers.
Best solution for better brakes is a full front end swap with either a CBR600, 929, 945, RC51 or VTR1000. With those bike's front ends you get nice opposed piston calipers that should provide more powerful braking, PLUS modern front suspension.

Superhawk uses a 41mm fork.

Probably easy to use those forks, brakes and wheel with a change of spacers and keep your VFR triple clamps and handlebars.

Then you get the 4 piston opposed calipers.

I got a full front end from a F3 if that will work.
