ok, i have been working up my suspension for my VFR on paper for a few days and this is what i have come up with:
FRONT vfr 750 fork tubes F3 caps and cartridges .90kg spring gold valve (or restacked shims which i would prefer cause its cheaper) vtr1000 fork lowers for a better braking system
REAR rebuilt stock shock revalved for new spring new spring with the appropriate strength to match with the front end
anyone see any flaws in this setup so far?
is the spacing on the vtr the same as the VFR? if so that cuts down on parts that have to be made, cause i would like to keep my stock triple clamps.
ALSO
will the vtr rotors bolt to the VFR wheel? once again, looking for ways to save some coin.
1) VTR rotors = '94-'97VFR750 rotors. They are functionally identical. 3 spoke front wheel is also interchangeable.
2) VTR1000 fork is rebound adjustable, the cartridges & caps are basicly the same as F3.
3) tube spacing same as 4th gen VFR. VTR fork tubes are longer than VFR750, but only about 3/16in.
4) VTR axle is slightly longer on both ends, to accomodate the double pinch-bolt arrangement. same as F3.
5) VFR fender mount holes won't match up with tabs on VTR sliders. Fortunately VTR red is code R157, same as VFR.
6) 4 pot VTR calipers are simillar to CBR900rr; will require a larger master cylinder. Both the 900RR and VTR use remote res MCs, but 14mm, 5/8ths and 11/16in MCs with integral reservoir can be found on other Hondas. (919, F4, F4i)
With some grinding, F4i/RC51/600rr/929/954 calipers will fit on the VTR sliders. Certain GSXR 6-piston Tokicos bolt up without mods, however with somewhat less than perfect alignment.
My '96 VFR fork had Showa 3 port valves, not much different than R/T Gold Valves. For the $$$ fork shims seem to be priced at though, buy enough to re-shim and you approach the cost of a Gold Valve kit.
'90s era Honda shocks really aren't worth the money/effort to rebuild. Fox-Penske-Ohlins worth the investment here. (my 2)
thx1139, Dec 19 2006, 09:51 PMWhat year 750? ya I looked into this a little.

i have a 91, so were lookin at 3rd gen here.
could i use the vtr calipers on 94-97 vfr fork tubes? or possibly my tubes? master cylinder isnt that big of a deal. i had planned on changing it anyways.
so if i was to get ahold of a set of vtr forks all i would have to do is respring/valve kit them and i basically have what i would need from one set of forks instead of trying to find all that stuff seperate? is the fork spacing the same?
the rear shock issue: if i buy a new one, i cant get an ohlins, and for the money i can get a wilbers remove hi/lo res and remote preload for the cost of a penske or fox.
VTR forks are OK, but apart from the extra adjustability are just as 'budget' as the VFR ones. If you use the calipers as well, make sure you use braided lines, as the standard VTR brake lines suck.

That was my same rationale. Ohlins is too good for little old us to continue making them. You can't get a Fox, either.
Did you order your Wilbers shock, then? The discount runs until 12/28! Wilbers VFR Offer

a. '90-'93 VFR750 front end same as '94+. Solid disc vs floating rotors the only difference.
b. No VTR calipers on 3rd or 4th gen fork w/o adapter.
c. Yep. slide VFR fork out of triples, slide in VTR fork. spacing is the same.
No experience with Wilbur's shock, sounds like a good deal tho...
WERA910, Dec 20 2006, 09:14 AMWhy not use F3 lowers and compression valves and get the compression damping adjustability? Everything else is the same as VTR/4gen VFR right?
F3 are rebound adjustable only, no comp adjusters. The F3 fork has double pinch bolts at the axle vs VFR single bolt. You need the slightly longer F3 axle to account for the extra width here. Likewise w/the VTR.
The 4th gen VFR and earlier F3 use the same front fender. Even the part number is the same IIRC; but the F3 uses a shorter 60 series front tire, and the fender mounts on F3 sliders are located about 1/2" inch closer to the axle centerline. A VFR 70/120 will still fit, but just so, and some brand tires may rub a little.
flyguyeddy, Dec 20 2006, 01:33 PMalright im confused a little
so if i want equivalent of VTR brakes i can use the 94-97 rotors and VTR fork lowers, correct? what other bikes can i source these parts from other than a VTR? i have been having trouble finding VTR forks on ebay
For VTR brakes on a '91 you need:
1) VTR fork sliders. Only other 41mm Honda sliders (with that caliper mount) that I can think of are maybe RS250? Good luck finding a pair of those.
2) VTR or F3 axle. Just slightly longer than the VFR axle, but required with the double pinch-bolt sliders.
3) VTR calipers. Early CBR900RR calipers are similar and more plentiful. The VTR clamps are usually gold; RR, black.
4) 14mm master cylinder.
Stock '91 VFR wheel and discs may be retained. '94+VFR/F3/VTR front wheel and floating rotors would be nice, but not required. The solid brake discs on the '90-'93 are the same 296mm diameter and spacing; that wheel assembly is interchangeable with all 3 of the forementioned. More weight though.
