I have read alot about both, I heard somewhere that the US Military and Harley Davidson still use it for their brake systems... might not now tho. I dunno. Not too hard to get DOT 5 here, just costly... and have been using it in my cars {non-abs} for many years without any fault.

The question IMO is why Dot5 never really hit it big, I mean its a really pretty friendly brake fluid, the only thing it wont absorb water, so when condensation does get into your lines, the water goes to work corroding stuff because the fluid wont absorb it. Where as Dot 4 will absorb condensation.
That's the only reason that I'm aware of why it never really took off, and being dot 4 eats paint gives good indication of its cleaning abilities.
Just use DOT 4. Valvoline makes one that exceeds DOT3 and 4 specs. for about $6.00/qt. Change it every other year (or every year if you are really anal) and it's done with.
DOT 5 is silicone based and always retains a small amount of entraped air resulting in spongy brakes...........not good.
Even HD has wised up and is now using glycol based brake fluid.

I use Motul DOT 5.1 but it's not silicon based, it's 100% synthetic, now I don't use it because I think it's way better than using DOT 4, I use it for 1 main reason it doesn't damage paint if I miss a spill or leak. Yes it costs double what standard DOT 4 cost but to me that's insurance to save me from having to repaint anything.
