I'm trying to get to the thermostat and have everything removed with the exception of the throttle bodies. I have loosend the clamps but the thing still won't budge. I have followed all the steps in the manual. Does anybody have any hints? fing02.gif

Never done the throttle body removal YET Will be in the next few weeks. I hear it takes a good piece of leveraging to get them loose from the boots. fing02.gif

yeah, I just got some info regarding that... Now I'm worried if I get it off, I won't be able to get it back on!

Well i'm under the impression some oil around the boot sleeves makes reassembly much easier fing02.gif Did you get all the clamps undone?i.e the middle ones. Ive been told a 18 in screwdriver is needed to reach in there? Did you have any issues with that part of the job?

I've loosened the clamps. I was able to do it with a 10 driver. 2 clamps for each boot equals8 clamps although I am reluctant to completely undo them. I could see how you would need a pry bar to get the body off, I've used a screwdriver to flex the unit a little bit and it does move but.........geez that thing is on there!

so I guess I'll just get a bar on the thing and try to reef on it.... so nervous! If anybody has anymore info I would greatly appreciate it

I put some pressure on the bottom of the boots with a bent screwdriver to help break them loose. They'll come, just ONLY put pressure on the TB's themselves...

So, I'm guessing that you are warning me to be careful not to damage any other parts of the bike that act as the support for the lever.....

I know, I have a bad habit of doing stuff like that. I have a little cats paw that I was going to use for the job. Thanks for the tip though.. I'll probe around with a screw driver to try to free them up.

Any other tips would be great, but it sounds like I just need to be carefully forceful. Should I be trying to pull the tb's straight up with a little to and fro wiggle?

Thanks for all the tips guys.

that sounds right. just triple check that everything is loose. you can use a blunted booger hook (an awl bent at a 90 deg, and the point removed) to run around the throttle bodies to seperate the rubber boot from them. easier than a screw driver and less likely to tear the rubber

I've had mine off a couple of times. After making sure the clamps are really loose, I pulled up hard on the forward side of the throttle bodies, rocking them from side to side. One by one, they each pop loose and you can start to lift them.

I hope you have a Honda shop manual, you'll need the illustrations to get everything hooked up correctly again, especially under the airbox. Worth it's weight in gold for lots of other stuff, too.

Good luck-

Keith

My .02, don't take them off.

Check and read the whole how-to thread. Haven't had mine off, but I've heared that you pretty much have to use yourself as a counterweight, which can be a scary thought, considering the risk of tipping the bike, or breaking stuff.
#12
I don't know if this really applies, since the 5th gen and the VF are completely different.

Linky

I found this very helpful. I also remove the carbs with a pair of 1"x1" handles huddled over the top and pushing. Wood makes a good prybar against aluminum peices.

Everything that I have requires removing the throttle bodies to get to the thermostat. If there is another way, PLEASE let me know.

Thanks, the info has been great.

I had the same problem on my 6th gen. I ended up using a pry bar. Here is my post on the subject.

I don't think you really need to use a pry bar... but I found it easier. Focus on getting just one boot popped loose, don't try to lift the whole TB off at once.

To get to the stat you have no option but to remove the TB's. Did you manage to get them off yet? If so pass along any tips like i said i'm doing the same in a week or 2 fing02.gif

The replies to this thread have saved me a ton of time and headache that it would have taken to replace my thermostat had I not read it...

You guys have completely talked me out of changing mine. beer.gif

They will pop out if all the clamps are loose. Use a little vaseline on the boots for reassembly, they'll pop in place real easy and facilitate subsequent removal if necessary. (Hope not)!!

While you have the TB out check all the hoses leading to the TB. This is the time to replace them if any look questionable. I had the two from the head to the thermostat housing go bad. Use 5/8 heater hose (about a $1.00 woth). Buy good hose (Goodyear or Dayco).

A OEM manual is essential.

Please forgive if I am incorrect, but, doesn't petrolium jelly eventually rot rubber and plastics?

Take a look in my Gallery.

5th Gen Throttle Body Removal Use a suitable piece of wood once the clamps are loosened. I used a hair dryer also on the rubber grommets before hand.

Great Photo!!!

Out of curiosity what problems were you getting to find out your thermostat had carcked it ?
