Repair Or Is It Rebuild?

well after just over 11 man hours, including wirelesswill's efforts, i have broke free! The frame is off the bike!!! I somehow managed to take the frame off without removing a single drop of fluid from the machine. The only disconnections are with the wireing harness and other random hardparts. So far, total cost is just the cost of 5 beers. The fun is about to begin though. I need everything from plastics, to a weld, to a new fork tube. So check it out...

If you look closely you can see the bars are straight but the wheel isnt...hmm, not going to be goo there!

The brass thing is what is left of the switch to my heated grips. The impact shattered the resistors for the grips and the switch.

Dude, sorry I couldn't make it last night... Rox was sick and I had to take care of her. You working on the bike any this week?

all i have left to do is the valve adjustment (regular maintanence i have to do within the next month or so anyways. I figure since nothing is in my way, might as well do it now! Im going to call you tomorrow evening probably to see about getting this frame welded!
Oh yea, i need to clean the thing, tons of dirt in weird places and the K&N needs to be cleaned along with the airbox. I figure I'll do most of that wednesday on...as tomorrow i will probably be revisiting a friend in the hospital (car wreck, she has a hole in a lung and two bones broke in the ankle...supposed to be discharged this week)

Wow indeed, looks lik you've got a fair job in front of you... hey, you dont need a new front end do ya? I happend to have a complete spare front end from a '99 smile.gif - its in Australia though!

Wow when you crash one you do a great job. blink.gif That frame break is in a helluva spot. I hope it will be strong enough when you get it welded. Have you contacted Sargent about repairing the seat? I'm betting they will do it pretty cheap. Are you replacing the plastic with oem or Sharkskins? It will be interesting watching it come back together. lurk.gif

Yikes, I still think you should have gone with insurance for this.
If you have the welding of the frame covered, I would check with local shops about fork straightening and see if they can straighten your fork tubes (one looks like it may be too far bent).
I can�t tell too well in the pictures, but perhaps you can do some plastic welding and get your fairings ready for paint relatively cheaply, you should be able to get the seat recovered for not too much if that is the only damage to it, and watch ebay for a subframe.

umm, plastics are going to be OEM as i haven't found any aftermarked skins for it! I'll gladly accept used and slightly rashed plastics as long as they have all of the tabs and whatnot...thinking about painting the thing black! Something a little different, ya know? anybody have any spare forks lying around from frankenviffer projects? LOL. I'll definately keep you guys up to date on what is going one. OH and i AM GOING TO BE AT T-MAC. Definately be drivable by then!

Jeremy, i have traxxion right down the road (about 1.5 miles) and also computrack down in cobb county. So i have straightening options for sure! as for the fairings, there are many busted peices. they are toast! As for paint, i have the experiance and the equipment to do a fair job! I have only painted 2 vehicles and two boats. I can say that plastic seems to be easier to paint if nothing else, then just for the "softner" you put in the paint. Seems less runny.

Look up plastic ABS welding in Google. You can weld ABS plastic together either through heat or chemically and have it as strong as the original. I plastic welded the mounting tabs and part of upper fairing back together on my VFR a year ago and have had no problems.
If you have any experience with body work, you should be able to make the fairings look almost like new for less than $40 in materials, and a lot of your own labor.
I was planning on painting my VFR black also. I had some metallic black picked out for the track bike, but I just shot it with bed liner and am saving the black for the VFR since even scratched fairings go for 80% of retail on eBay. pissed.gif

My gracious, glad you are OK. Bike looks pretty bad, but seems like a resonable re-build. The only tough part is the re-weld on the frame, good luck.

well I dont know how much help I can be, but I have a left side peg hanger, fairing and rear fairing that I will give you from my low side, they may be in better shape than yours, Im not sure.

So are you not turning this in to insurance?

I ended up turning mine into insurance, they wrote me a big fat check for $3200, $700 of it I used to repair my bike (I had already scavenged parts from all over the internet) and with the remaining money, I bought my wife some of those new fangled side by side super dooper washing machines. Now I have her talked into me keeping the ole VFR! 491.gif fing02.gif

matt, yep its me. I basically lowsided up on GA60. there is a thread around here somewhere. Titled "oh shit" or somthing like that. if your fairings are in one piece, im game. Mine are missing chunks from the off road excursion it and i took.
Beck, really it isnt that bad. It looks like total crap, but heck, when the lady backed into my bike it did almost the same damage. The hard part is just getting that tab back on, the rest is just going to take a couple of paychecks and some time!

Man, lotta' work there. The weld location acually is a low stress area when the bike is fully assembled. Just a lot of boltin' back. Sounds like you have a lot of "easy to pay" volunteers. Good luck.......................... fing02.gif

Got an Idea Kevin. You still have an intact 5th gen engine there, so now you have to find a 6th gen chassis to put it in!
Could be the perfect VFR in the making!

OK, if you are missing parts that would be a difficult job.
If you do need to get any Honda OEM parts, PM JoeW. He will give you a much better price and much faster shipping than Ron Ayers and Service Honda.

My plastics are in decent shape, they are just scraped up and one of the mounting tabs was cracked, so I used Plastex to put it back together, seems to be holding fine, I used it for a long time before ordering new plastics. The rear cowl, is just scratched, a little body filler on both panels and some paint and they would be good as new.

Anyway, glad to hear your ok and if you need any help on the bike feel free to call me and I will come help ya.

I dont think its totaled at all. The tweaked sub frame is really no biggy, Ive done this a half dozen times to motorcross bikes and managed to straighten them back out to perfection. All that is seriously wrong is the fork tube, and the broken mount, but it sounds like you have a good welder lined up to fix that.

Oh yeah, did you bend your handlebars at all? If so I have a mint right bar if you need that also.

Thats the worst idea ever! The perfect opitome of engineering and styling perfection (5th gen) should never be cross bred with the horrendously ugly and inferior 6th gen! 491.gif

I had to have two of those subframe tabs broken on my current fifth gen.. a local machine shop I use for work repaired it... if you'd like to bring it here, PM me and I'll give you the info...

I'm about to put some fifth gen plastic in the trash... can't remember the condition... the upper is missing a lot, but one of the lower's wasn't too bad... they've been in a box on the shelf for 3 years and I'm trying to make room for other stuff...
