Vtr Clip-ons (on A 5th Gen)

I just got some VTR clip-ons. Wanted to know others' experience with getting them installed on a 5th gen. (EDIT: I should note that I spent a few hours searching and found posts on the VFR mailing list dealing with the topic, but everyone seemed to have an easy time and noone detailed the clearance issue I am having with the throttle)

The guy I bought them from had already ground off the alignment thing, and drilled for locating the switch housings.

The left clip-on went on okay. The right one is being a PITA. The metal throttle cable shrouds are interfering with the top of the plastics, argh! Right now, I see two solutions, neither of which I like.

1) Lower the front end. Based on some measurements, I would need to lower the front end like an inch to get perfect clearance. I'd have to mount the clip-ons higher up on the forks. I don't like this option very much.

2) By the looks of it, if I could put a bend in the throttle shroud, I might be able to swing it. THe only thing I worry about is kinking it, and having to replace it.

Is there an easier solution?

could always trim the plastic. get a replacement on ebay if you ever want to put it back to stock

Personally I wouldn't fit the bars without the retaining nub, but hey, it's your bike. Two options :
1) try bending the shroud upwards a little without kinking it
2)remove 3/8ths of an inch from the top of each shroud where it enters the bottom of the twistgrip. Normally one or both of these shrouds is threaded so you either have to do without the threaded portion or run a die nut down it to recreate the thread.

Are those definately VTR bars ? they look lower than I remember - more CBR'ish. But then I am aging rapidly.


Further points - shouldnt the throttle cables go in front of the fork leg ? Also, in the pics you don't have the switchgear fastened up into it's final place this would give more clearance anyway.

Last thought - redrill the hole for locating the switch housing further round the bar to rotate the housing towards you..

Throttle cables in front of the fork leg, slightly bend the housing shroud up a little and rotation of the clipon should do it. They are VTR clipons btw. Pics sent nil.

Mine are like that anyway - I thought that's how they were supposed to be. unsure.gif
Bear in mind there are two different sizes/shapes of VTR clipons. The early ones (1997 - 2000?) are lower and angled differently to the later ones, which are 19mm higher and less angled.

4th Gen bars are between VTR bars and 3rd/5th Gen bar in height, so if these bars *are* too low to work with the 5th Gen you know what to look for... good luck. Agree with the above re. routing of throttle cables etc.
