My Bottom's Dirty!

Hi guys, no I don't have a personal hygiene problem, but beside the bike earlier I found my exhaust pipe clamp on the ground where it had corroded away and just fell off. While I was inspecting the underside of the bike I noticed the silencer box just before where the cam starts was totally corroded and rusted. pissed.gif

All the exhaust pipes and this silencer box all appear to be one, so will I eventually need to replace the whole exhaust, or can I get a new silencer and weld it to existing pipes?

I feel it's problem that needs to be addressed at some point, sooner rather than later,

P.S. Completed my first oil change last week, all happy with myself, saved a few euro!

The "silencer" that you are talking about is the Cat-Con. However in answer to your question, you will either have to do something custom, or replace the whole unit, can't just buy the cat-con. If you buy new, have them jet-hot coated, that will prevent the corosion.

Get on the UK VFR forum http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/index.php? and have a look there and/or post the same question. Someone should be able to tell you where to get a new one from. I think that Motad make a replacement.

Yeah, the fifth gens are known to have rusty, corroded headers. I had to replace mine too.

Though a bit spendy, this is good advice from chris2992.

From my house, I have to ride right down the beach to get anywhere, and often the "salt-fog" is thick. I try to hose the bike down as often as possible to prevent the very thing that happened to you. So far, no real corrosion on the exhaust (uncoated), but it usually festers more on the inside where eyes cannot see.

Ride often and avoid short trips - that'll at least dry it all out when you do. I read somewhere a long time ago that it takes at least 20 minutes underway for full heat saturation to occur throughout all parts of an engine.
