I rode sunrise today I was Awesome! I decided to go back up and as I was winding up the mountain I got on the gas and felt the bike kick twice in succession. now I knew my chain was loose and my sprocket was on its way out so I backed off of it a putted home. after a close inspection I noticed my sprocket was missing more teeth than a boxer in a tyson fight! I'll post pics as soon as I figure out how to link them. see if this works

Good thing you are not a Pilot....Well I went for a flight today, I knew my prop was loose and I didnt have much gas .......... Why are you people riding unsafe motorcycles..... Your not only going to kill yourself but innocent people along the way. Mind you Im glad you made it home safe to tell us all about it but really..... Lets use a proper check out before we ride, and dont ride if it is unsafe . Your family will thank you.....I thank you...
Ok. Here we go. In my defense I didn't really know what a worn sprocket looked like being that this will be the first time I replace the chain & sprocket (last time it was done by the mechanics repairing my bike from the crash) FWIW. Well I do Now!
yep, we all make mistakes. long as we learn from it. as someone told me, when your teeth look like waves and lean one way or another, its time for a change. how many miles did you have on it?
Wow, please go over the entire bike for other similar potential problems before you even think of riding again and that's after changing those sprockets and chain! Glad your home safe, that could have cause a crash for you! blink.gif

actually is was a combination of gravel and sand smoothed out with 4 grit sand paper. they told me at the dealership that all the racers do it. goofy.gif

by my calculations i got 16,521 miles out of it.

if by late you mean ridiculously endangering bordering on unlawful neglect then you are correct my friend. its now on the center stand and thats where it will stay until I get the parts in AND yes I will be inspecting the bike for other things. I just changed the oil and plugs are on the list as well.
I find it hard to believe that you didn't have any issues until today. 16,000 miles? Did you tighten the chain during that time or did you over-tighten the chain? A sprocket shouldn't look like that at 16,000 miles. Please tell us this is an April Fool's joke. huh.gif
I wish it were. But I didn't have any problems until today when I kicked off about 15-18 teeth. no April fools just Blind incredibly dumb luck. I had to adjust the tension once about a month ago. I am really hard on acceleration and I do a lot of engine braking nothing crazy but its frequent.

Make sure you are not adjusting the chain too tight. I can't think of much else that could cause that much wear and damage so quickly other than a very tight chain.
That looks like the parts my mechanic has in his waiting room. You've seem them; the piston with a valve poking out, a Brake Rotor that has worn so bad it split from the hub.
No one metioned it so I will, REPLACE YOUR FRONT SPROKET TOO!

I'm searching for the Chain and sprocket kit as we speak.
I picked up a chain and sprocket set from the sumofallparts ebay store. Vortex sprockets w/ EK ZVX chain I believe. $200 I thought was a great deal, but I ordered it weeks ago and still have not received it. Believe me I have been up their ass about it. YOU, might want to stick with a steel sprocket set though.
WOW!! I was thinking about getting a ne chain and sprockets, but maybe I should redefine "Worn". As an aside, how do you know when your chain has reached the end of adjustment if you just bought the bike?

Locktite and tighten up that kickstand bolt while you are down there... T
Man, that thing shoulda' been vibrating the bike for ages.........lucky it didn't come off and wipe some bike and rider parts out a long time ago. Glad nothing worse happened......but as stated...noob mistake. Might wanna' have "everything" checked over real good by someone knowledgeable. For the chain / sprocket to be in that condition, there has to be a host of other items in bad need of maintenance. Live and Learn = Learn and Live...................... fing02.gif beer.gif
I went one tooth down in the front also which adds a little acceleration at lower RPM's. They can do one tooth down for free at this place. Your speedo will be off a little bit more though, but who the hell uses that anyway? Are you going to replace youself?
Wow... and I thought _*I*_ was bad about chain maintenance. 20k miles and chain/sprockets will be done this season. I can just start to pull a link away from the rear sprocket.
I ordered from kneedraggers but they got me to place the order and then told me the stuff was on back order even though I told them to check and see if the places had the items in stock. I ended up ordering from cycle gear in el cajon (great service!) and getting the parts next day for much less. The sprockets are Parts unlimited steel and the chain is From EK.
